I rarely write restaurant reviews. I generally don't write negative reviews, so when I take the…read moretime to write one, it's usually because I found something unexpectedly good. Kraken Killer Seafood was one of the biggest restaurant surprises I've had in years. I've driven past the place on 51st Street many times and never gave it much thought. My wife and I finally tried it Friday, and frankly I expected a decent, run-of-the-mill meal at today's increasingly painful restaurant prices. Boy, was I wrong. I had the Asian sausage with sticky rice for about $10 and a shrimp dish served over French fries with an Asian sauce. The shrimp were terrific--fried just enough to have a slight crunch while remaining tender and flavorful, and the sauce really worked. I'm a sausage lover, so I'm fairly hard to impress. Their Asian sausage was unlike any sausage I've had before, and it was delicious. The sticky rice was cooked perfectly. My wife ordered the fried cod with coleslaw for around $13. The portion was generous, the fish was good, and the coleslaw was excellent. And I am a coleslaw freak who rarely compliments somebody else's coleslaw. What impressed me most was the combination of quality, variety and price. I've had plenty of excellent restaurant meals, but usually at places where I expected excellence and paid accordingly. I did not expect this from Kraken, which made the experience that much better. The menu has enough variety that I want to go back and work my way through it. If the quality is this consistent across the menu, Kraken has found itself a regular customer. One warning: check the hours before you go. They have somewhat unusual hours and are closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. I've actually shown up more than once only to discover they were closed. Kraken Killer Seafood is a hidden gem. In an era when restaurant prices seem to go up every time you look at a menu, finding food this good at prices this reasonable was a genuinely pleasant surprise. We'll be back.

When you get there you order at the counter and then find you a table. There were plenty empty tables even though there were lots of people there. The ambience was nice, we were able to sit comfortably and carry conversation. My son and I ordered the catfish and shrimp combo, with a side of green beans, fries, and onion rings and it also comes with two hush puppies. The green beans were delicious. The hush puppies were good but I prefer just plain regular old hush puppies. These tasted like they had maybe jalapeño in it. They went spicy just a little kick to them. The serving size is a big portion for the combos. It came with three fish fillets. The fish was fried good but it lacked seasoning. The shrimp was good! We all actually liked the shrimp. The fries were good too there was just a lot. My son loved the onion rings. My husband ordered the jumbo shrimp combo and he loved his shrimp. They were fried perfectly. He also got a side of corn which was good. I saw this place on TikTok and that's what brought me here. Like I said it was good and I love the fact that it is made fresh right there, but it lacked seasoning. Oh and I also loved that it wasn't fishy, if that makes sense.

I happened to get there not too long before they closed. I was with someone and didn't realize we were going to a place that was closing soon. The staff was so kind, they didn't rush us nor complain! Came by to check on us multiple times and made sure we were happy. The seafood boat ordered were enough for our table of 8 people. I am not a big seafood person so I was happy they had chicken and rice on the menu too lol.
