I rarely write restaurant reviews. I generally don't write negative reviews, so when I take the time to write one, it's usually because I found something unexpectedly good. Kraken Killer Seafood was one of the biggest restaurant surprises I've had in years. I've driven past the place on 51st Street many times and never gave it much thought. My wife and I finally tried it Friday, and frankly I expected a decent, run-of-the-mill meal at today's increasingly painful restaurant prices. Boy, was I wrong. I had the Asian sausage with sticky rice for about $10 and a shrimp dish served over French fries with an Asian sauce. The shrimp were terrific--fried just enough to have a slight crunch while remaining tender and flavorful, and the sauce really worked. I'm a sausage lover, so I'm fairly hard to impress. Their Asian sausage was unlike any sausage I've had before, and it was delicious. The sticky rice was cooked perfectly. My wife ordered the fried cod with coleslaw for around $13. The portion was generous, the fish was good, and the coleslaw was excellent. And I am a coleslaw freak who rarely compliments somebody else's coleslaw. What impressed me most was the combination of quality, variety and price. I've had plenty of excellent restaurant meals, but usually at places where I expected excellence and paid accordingly. I did not expect this from Kraken, which made the experience that much better. The menu has enough variety that I want to go back and work my way through it. If the quality is this consistent across the menu, Kraken has found itself a regular customer. One warning: check the hours before you go. They have somewhat unusual hours and are closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. I've actually shown up more than once only to discover they were closed. Kraken Killer Seafood is a hidden gem. In an era when restaurant prices seem to go up every time you look at a menu, finding food this good at prices this reasonable was a genuinely pleasant surprise. We'll be back. read more

I was a little hesitant going in because of some of the reviews but it didn't disappoint! I really liked how open the space felt, and the murals on the walls added a fun, artsy touch. They had market prices for all the seafood clearly displayed on the wall. The server was very nice and attentive. We started with the Krak Fries. My husband enjoyed them, especially with the sliced tenderloin pork on top, an unexpected but tasty combo. The side of kimchi tasted old to me. We also ordered the papaya salad with two peppers. It brought the heat, but in a good way! I loved that they included salted crab shells. For our seafood boil, we went with both of their current specials: the snow crab special and the crawfish combo (no picture because not sure if these changes). We also added a pound of clams, and they were able to toss everything together in one bowl, which was super convenient. We got the Flavortown sauce at medium spice. It was flavorful like the name promised! Next time we'll definitely try it hot. Everything tasted fresh and well-cooked. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised. Would definitely go back! read more

Service itself is a bit slow but all the orders were correct. We should've known that this place would be bad when we first saw how empty it was. The booth I sat in had me sinking, and they cover the table with paper. I could see if they used it as a way for kids to draw and stuff, but I also didn't see any crayons to do so, so as far as I know they're doing it to minimize cleaning efforts. It could've been smart if they added more use to it, but without said use it feels cheap. We got some fried pickles as an appetizer, and we couldn't even finish it because it was over breaded and chewy. It was clear they didn't dry the pickles before breading. The cod wasn't good, and the chicken was flavorless. We also got a crawfish boil that was fairly decent, but the crawfish itself was dirty. We got cheesecake as compensation for one of our dishes being delayed, and even that was disappointing. The only reason I'm giving the place a two was because the waitress was patient and kind. Honestly, she should start looking for another job, because I don't see this place lasting. This place is way too expensive for the quality they put out. DONT GO HERE. read more
