Wow! I just stumbled upon this place and it was amazing. The staff and clientele - it's like walking into Cheers - you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. The food was amazing - I had the veal marsala and it was out of this world, light, tasty but not drowning in marsala wine. Speaking of wine, they had a great by the glass selection. A nice neighborhood resto. Decor could use a shot in the arm, but food has never disappointed. Last night I had rigatoni with mushrooms & crumbled sausage. I asked for the sausage well cooked. The dish was excellent and quite large (easily shareable & I brought some home for lunch today). Impressively the mushrooms were a variety of wild mushrooms. The sausage was well cooked but not overcooked. I used to be a chef & I appreciate when a resto turns out a great "regular" dish. All in all I was very happy! Of course will go again. read more

Monday September 23rd, my party of four ate at Mario's. We have eaten at Mario's before and enjoyed it. Three of the four of us ordered the Orange Roughy special. All three got sick upon returning home...two vomited and one got diarrhea. Cannot say for certain it was the fish special, but it would be a hell of a coincidence if it was not. We called Mario's the next day to relate our experience. The manager, a woman, said I would get a call back and perhaps we might get some compensation. Never got a call. So we called back on Friday night. Another manager got on the phone and explained that the phone number they had was not a working number...and they had tried to call back. This manager explained that they sold 12 specials that night and no one else called about a problem. The fish was frozen and thawed that day so it was not old. The chef inspected everything and did not see a problem. She was truely sorry. I would think 25% of the specials coming with a complaint is a lot. Most people do not call about this sort of thing. After dropping $289 for four people, I was hoping under the circumstances some adjustment or offer would have been made. Nada. Mario's is a solid restaurant. I wish they stood behind their food. The restaurant is small and cozy, but very busy, so book ahead (on Friday nights at least). Our server was ok, hard to hear due to all the noise around from groups of people, but rather attentive. We started off with a white truffle pizza, which was AMAZING. It was posted on the weekly special board, so it's not a part of the regular menu, just fyi. I had a Beef Wellington (also weekly special) and it was prepared perfectly. My sides were lacking a bit flavor, but that's ok, salt and pepper did the trick for me. My fiancé got Veal Madeira and that was just OK. It was on a bit chewy side and the noodles weren't really to our liking. I also had an Espresso Martini, which was good, and he had a Sazerac, which ol he said was delicious. read more

Omg what took me so long? We love a hotel in this area & have walked by this restaurant many times. I must admit we were hooked by the buy one glass of wine. Get one free deal for Tuesdays. I'm so glad we stopped in. Lovely intimate restaurant, people at the bar having a good time, lots of obviously long-term customers that knew the owner who was constantly surveying the room. The wine was excellent, I tried the minestrone soup, which was also wonderful. We enjoyed the bread and oil that was immediately put on our table. My hubby can't get past trying spaghetti and meatballs, and he really liked this version. I had the special white pizza with cheese, asparagus, and prosciutto. This restaurant is very close to my current apartment and it's taken me a long time to actually get food from here LOL. We made a reservation for 5:45 and got seated immediately but it took us 15 minutes to actually get served... I had to go up to a waiter and ask him if we were going to be served because we were just waiting there . slightly frustrating since we were on a time crunch We ordered the bruschetta, Margherita pizza and ravioli. Bruschetta was good, nothing special honestly. The ravioli was really good but definitely not worth $23... And the pizza was average at best. Overall, 3 stars. We came here as a group of 6 people, us and two other couples. We were sat in a nice booth, secluded a little bit out of the way near the bar. Our waiter, Jeff, was amazing and made an excellent champagne suggestion. He was also helpful in giving us suggestions of where to head after dinner. The place was busy on a Friday night, but we had made reservations, so we didn't need to wait. We split two Burrata plates and the Calamari, each was delicious and a good portion size. My partner ordered the Bow Tie Pasta, which was good, but was better the next day. The portion sizes are very generous, so you will definitely have leftovers if you get a starter and main or main and a dessert. I ordered the Caprese Salad and Minestrone soup since I wasn't as hungry, both were tasty and simple. This wasn't the best Italian food I've ever had, especially in Chicago, but the atmosphere, energy, and level of service were phenomenal. It seems like it really comes down to what you order in terms of how happy our group was with the food. read more

This neighborhood favorite HITS THE SPOT in your heart that you didnt know needed filling. Moments after we were seated, we were greeted by complimentary bread service and Mario himself. Service was efficient, but not rushed. We started with the mussels which were steamed to perfection in a bed of spicy red sauce. For our entrees, we ordered the Rigatoni Roma and the Veal Marsala. The pasta was perfectly creamy and sweet with delectable bites of mozzarella cheese. The veal was thin and light. And don't skip the Tiramisu....They have a pulse on Italian comfort food, and we are already planning our next trip back. read more

My boyfriend and I live in the building across the street and have never tried this place. After the recent snowstorm, we really wanted something easy and romantic for dinner, and made the mistake of ordering takeout from here. We got the minestrone soup, rigatoni Roma, and margarita pizza. The best thing was the soup, which was only okay. The pizza was served on a crust that was so thin and papery/crunchy it tasted like cardboard. It was topped with what looked like canned diced tomatoes and no fresh mozzarella. I'm pretty sure I ate a similar pizza growing up that my parents bought frozen from Costco. The pasta was not as bad, but overcooked and bland. The sausage tasted like the kind you buy from ModPizza as a topping. The pasta sauce was honestly bland and just tasted like cream- one of the worst vodka sauces I have ever eaten. I would not recommend this restaurant! It was extremely expensive for what we got. Although, maybe we just made the wrong menu choices... read more

Solid Italian spot in the Gold Coast. Came here for dinner this week and had a great time. I will say the ambience is pretty dark inside. I'd be curious what it is like sitting out in the tents they have set up. I did feel a little stuffy but I think the food made up for it. I ordered the Italian chop salad and added grilled chicken to it and was stuffed by the end, which is pretty surprising. The other person I was with ordered the raviolis, which also looked very good. At the end of the night I also had an espresso, and the other person had a gelato which looked awesome. The food was really good but the place was a little out-of-the-way for me, so I don't know how often I'll be back. If I'm around the area though, I would try it out again . read more

From the moment we walked in and the lady greeted us she was foul towards me and of course flirtatious with my spouse she was looking angry at me the entire time and then the other lady who was just bossing everybody around was talking to me like I was her child when I was trying to escort my children to the table she's just like rushing us before we even had a chance to move. Just like other people say the people who greet you and try to see you are extremely mean vile and evil you are literally wasting your time because these people are not nice courteous they just want to see you out of here when we were sitting at the table she was even bragging about how she had an x amount of people coming through the door and her goal was to just get them out of here as much as possible she kept coming to people's tables annoying the crap out of them and asking at my table how my husband's food was how my kids were. eye contact with me. My family is an interracial family by the way so of course I got the most foul treatment out of everyone not shocking so avoid black people if you want to also not go off on these people because I had to stop myself from going off several times because I actually stand out for myself and I was going to go ham on these people but I had to leave because my children were here so if I were you guys don't show up I don't care what race you are boy caught this place these people serve undercooked food they are racist. The food is overpriced the calamari was almost $25 and it was rubbery and they gave us about five pieces that look like octopuses and you couldn't even eat it so it was also a waste like extremely chewy calamari. My item was literally almost $30 , three french fries and a skinny piece of chicken breast that looks like it had been beaten with a hammer it was grizzly all around the edges and the center was rubbery and barely had any meat. It was supposed to be chicken breast with sweet peas and roasted potatoes and then I got that garbage instead I thought I was going to get a big plump juicy piece of meat for that price save your money please do not come to this place. The whole place was vibey, I put in my reservation to have a table in the corner because we had our children with us and didn't want to disturb people, they set us straight next to someone on a long bench a couple in the corner who actually looked surprised that they sat us next to them when every other seat in there was empty so it was very intentional. I also requested the details that asked if there was an occasion and I put that it was our anniversary none were acknowledged nor honored. So if you're looking for a place that it's going to fill you up stay away from this place because they serve disgusting undercooked chicken the restaurant itself dishes were dirty when they set them on to the table in front of me they sat us with a couple who were clearly on a date night like literally back to that side to side we had no wiggle room and we have children with us. If you sense energy like I do you would very well do best not to come to a place like this because these people are out to try it. read more

We came here a couple of years ago and had an amazing meal. Came back tonight and it's still great. We didn't have a reservation but were seated quickly. Our wine, a Chianti, was tasty, as was the calamari appetizer. We skipped salad, but other tables had them and they looked great. Had the pasta Diavola on the server's rec. it was piping hot and delicious with lots of seafood. Hubby had a chicken piccata and it looked amazing. (I am terrified that there's a 2-piece chicken option cause that thing was huge!). He reported it tasty. The salted caramel affogato was as delicious as it was 2 years ago - our server then recommended it and I am forever in his debt. The place got a little noisy toward the end of our meal, but everyone was clearly having a good time and enjoying their meals. First off, the food was pretty horrible at best. But here's the thing... the owner yelled at us because we used a stroller at the table.... As if the stroller in and of itself was offensive somehow... like we were trying to be disobedient rather than the fact that my two year old nephew needed to sit in it. And here's the other amazing thing... the owner acts as if he is doing US a favor by allowing us to eat at his dingy restaurant. He is so daft he doesn't realize that it is US doing HIM a favor that we are paying HIM to eat at his horrible restaurant. As a very successful business woman and as a person in the restaurant industry for many years, you NEVER scold a guest but rather are grateful (that means kind and grateful) we decided to eat at your restaurant. You ALWAYS treat the guests with respect because if not, THEY WON'T COME BACK and you will be SHUTDOWN...YOU MORON. I just moved to the neighborhood. I made a reservation for 9 o'clock at night with my husband and my one year-old baby. My baby wasn't able to sleep so we thought a little late night dinner might make us feel all better.
