Mario's continues to be the only place I would even consider buying fish and chips from,i was introduced to it when getting a lift home one night,mg friend stopped at Mario's,as he did every Friday,i declined his offer of a portion,as my experience of Glasgow chip shops is all too familiar, greasy, soggy, and worstcof all...that rancid fatty taste, and smell, you can tell on entering marios that they use Fresh oil(I won't bore people with the chemical change that it undergoes to smell like those bad ones...not good though, and VERY unhealthy).I saw fish coming out that night, coveted it,next week I was in there ordering up,it's been more or less a weekly part of my diet ever since,i live alone,i love fish. I eat it regularly,in other recipes, but to deep fry like this is something I'd never attempt, why would I need to.
The fish..is always a prime piece of the freshest haddock,no hiding bad fish, you can't,Mario's use the best (I buy fish from kp,s,I'd pay 4.80 to 5,20 for this size)
The frying..is perfect, the batter crisp, with lots of frilly, crusty bits,it's thin not a big sooggy layer, perfectly complements the beautiful pearly flesh
The chips..are thick ,but not too thick, soft inside,no hard uncooked ones, fine flavoured conistently, and the best bit..
ITS NOT GREASY,at all,and,6,50 for fish supper, too much for me,i never finish it,but can't bring myself to get a mini fish supper,I've had it once,it's nice, but the big one wins it
They've now got a superb home delivery service,it arrives so hot (brilliant containers, best I've seen)that I can't eat it ,too hot,wow..how they do it at this price defeats logic, like most businesses they are probably wary of increasing prices, despite the fish, potatoes, lighting, heating, oil etc being much more expensive.
I did get the same dish ,from a competitor recently,i was with someone ,Mario's was closed, this award winning place had the thickest batter, horrible uncooked lumps, full of fancy gimmicks, not for me..
Im a great believer in the best diet tip ever, eat whenhungry, stop eating when full,simple..nothing unhealthy about fish and chips done properly, the skill of the frying makes it a healthy choice as no excess oil
So,as someone who, until 4.5 years ago hadn't had fish and chips for a long time and had written it off,and as someone who lives to eat,i hope Mario's keeps going ,but ,guys, prices too low..how,really are you making a profit, and that yelper who dropped it a star on price,on previous review, this is not a subjective opinion, the price of fish, ever rising (would you go out to the north sea in storms for a pittance,no,that's why fish is expensive ),good food is worth paying for,you get great food here, for a fabulous price, and if like me your so inclined, delivered right to your door
They do amazing ice creams from thortonhall dairy, tablet flavour being my favourite, very nice, just finished the one in picture..as always,I've left 2 thirds of chips,i hate waste,i keep forgetting to ask for less! read more
