The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.

It's got quite a decent sized sit in restaurant including a mezzanine level which serves the same food you'll get taking away but presented nicer than I've ever seen in a traditional chippy. The take out is pretty speedy although expect to wait for fish. The chips themselves are really good and just how I like them. Well cooked, soft and not greasy at all. The fish was fresh, light and crispy and available in traditional batter and panko breadcrumbs but I went for batter. The battered sausage was one of the best I've had too, plenty of bite in it - some sausages can be a little limp... For a fish supper and sausage supper it only set me back £9.10 and that was a good meal for two people - they don't skimp on chips that's for sure! This manna from heaven is a light doughy bread with a thin layer of cheese, butter, and garlic in the middle and then topped with butter and green herbs (garlic tops maybe?).
