Mac and cheese ball with chips and panko small haddock. Super nom!
    Joe P.

Hands down the best chippy in Glasgow that I've been to at least. Thanks to the recommendations of fellow yelpers I had been planning to pay Hooked a visit for the past year or so, and I can only wish that I had visited sooner. After lengthy perusal of the extensive and impressive menu, I settled on a half haddock in panko breadcrumbs with chips. And a side of Mac n cheese balls of course. I think I made the right decision. The fish was really tasty and a good size too, the breadcrumbs gave the fish an exotic feeling, sort of Kentucky fried Japanese fish. Very Morrison. I ended up eating it with my bare hands, animal style. The Mac and cheese balls were of an impressive size, about a cricket ball. They were piping hot, so I regretted biting into it immediately! It was super tasty too, and a big enough portion to satisfy any appetite (the chippy is only a few hundred metres from Hampden Park so this would be great for any big event there). My wife had battered halloumi which was really really good. The chips were great too, as was the service. And the prices were good too. No need to drive to Troon to get great fish and chips any more! Updates after my second visit... I had the fish and chip burger. The bun was great but I just don't think it really works, added to that the mushy peas were really hard and overly minty. So I won't be ordering that again but as there's so much great stuff left on the menu I'm spoilt for choice next time.

Hooked is that kind of fancy chippy that makes you feel a lot less guilty about having a takeaway for dinner. They've got an interesting menu with a huge amount of choice - not just fish and sausage - and so I was excited to give it a try when having dinner with friends who live nearby last night. We popped down to place our order. This place is very slick - nice white tiling, very classy for a takeaway shop. There is a few seats in the window but for me it's too small to eat in, I'd rather get my food and go. I love the menu - it is so refreshing to see somewhere doing really interesting options in a chippy. There's things like halloumi, baked fish, squid rings and salmon bites. I ordered the baked fish with lemon & parsley as a supper and a side of onion rings. You can also choose your seasoning for your chips (brilliant idea) and while chicken salt sadly isn't an option, I got garlic & Parmesan. If you don't want chips, you can get Spanish rice instead. It didn't take too long - less than 10 minutes and was all beautifully packaged up for us. Everything was labelled so when we got home to eat it, we knew what was what. I tried a mac cheese ball which was MASSIVE, not what I expected at all. It was the size of a tennis ball rather than little balls but it was really good. It could have been cheesier but for a chip shop mac cheese it was excellent. How do they get it into a ball shape? Who knows. The fish and chips were lovely. The baked fish was a nice change and felt very healthy and fresh. The chips were seasoned but maybe not as much as I'd have liked and this was really the only part of the meal I thought was a little disappointing. I wish I had of ordered fritters - but I'll save that for next time. I'll definitely be back to try Hooked again soon as this was a really nice change from your usual fish supper.

Veggie haggis & sweet potato fries - happiness in a box

I first read in November that this place did veggie sausage suppers, veggie haggis suppers, and bean burgers; a mix of not being in the UK and eating my way around other places has put off my first visit until now. They fry in rapeseed oil and the batter is vegan - and they can also fry in a gluten free batter as well. The only downside is that only the chips are fried separately, the other veggie things are fried in the same fryer as the meat/fish products. I'm vegan and it grosses me out a little bit, but in the big picture more chippies frying only in plant based oils who offer great vegetarian suppers also suitable for vegans is a great thing. Veggie haggis is really filling and I thought £2.75 for two decent battered servings was fantastic. It was £1.50 more to top it up to a supper or £1.95 for sweet potato fries; I went for the latter. Delicious - I've rarely met a sweet potato fry I didn't like. My husband opted for the sausage supper, which he also gave a big thumbs up. We were lucky enough to have the single table outside - with two chairs - free for Hooked customers, and apart from the slight wind it was lovely weather. Staff were really friendly - very organised by labelling products on their carton/box whilst the rest of the order was being cooked, friendly greeting on arrival, and doing their most to check you had everything you needed, napkins, cutlery, etc. I don't go to chippies that often but I think this is the most attention and pleasantries I've ever gotten in one, usually you don't get much beyond "Salt and vinegar?". They also engage with customers well on social media. I'll definitely be back!

I arrived at The Chippy Doon The Lane at the right time, around 5:45 p.m., on Tuesday 16 July 2019…read more The walk in to the entrance was through an alley between two buildings and had signage marking the restaurant was getting near, as I approached not another person did appear. The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.
