I came at an hour where about 40% of seats were filled and it took 45+ minutes to get my order. I went to Mario's last week for the first time on a day trip with my family! The restaurant was really nice inside and clean! Our waiter was awesome!!! I ordered the manicotti with a meatball. The manicotti and the meatball was really good. You could tell the pasta was homemade and totally cooked when you order. The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because the sauce tasted burnt to me. What a delicious place for dinner! We stopped after the Holiday Train Show. We had no reservations but were warmly accepted. The free valet service was a huge plus. The holiday cocktails were amazing!! The bread basket was very welcome and the little bottle of olive oil was a great addition! We ordered a variety of dinners - my chicken parm was delicious! Angel hair pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce was wonderful! Not too sweet, not at all acidic. Hubby loved his veal parm and the others in our party were just as happy with their choices. After tasting each other's dinners, there was nothing left to take home. I left pleasantly full and extremely happy. Capellini with red clam sauce was very bland, almost tasteless. It was the worst pasta dish I've been served in an Italian restaurant in a long time, virtually no garlic. The lettuce in the salad had lots of brown edges. Unannounced 3.25% surcharge for using a credit card. Restaurant filed a baseless complaint against me with their booking service, Open Table, for supposedly not showing up for my reservation, which was annoying. We attended members' evening at the Bronx Zoo and my husband (who grew up in the Bronx) insisted we have dinner on Arthur Ave. Mario's did not disappoint. We ordered the antipasto caldo for the table and my kids devoured the clams, mussels, and even the eggplant & peppers, which I'm pretty sure had anchovies on them! For an entree I had the manicotti. I don't think I've ever cleaned my plate I'm a restaurant before! It was so delicious I'm still thinking about it! Service was friendly and not at all rushed. Even though we were the last people there on a Tuesday when they were clearly ready to close our server asked if we wanted more coffee / anisette. A trip to Arthur Ave in the Bronx is a must for anyone visiting NYC, and Mario's is worth a visit. Mario's is more upscale than many of the other restaurants in the neighborhood, and the food is excellent. They have recently opened up an outside dining area in front, and have implemented many safety upgrades in the wake of covid19. On a recent trip to NY, we took the subway from Manhattan up to Arthur Ave, it is about a mile walk from the subway station to Mario's. We had a few pizzas, prawns, mussels, etc. and all were amazing. Staff is very friendly, the location is perfect, and all in all is a highly recommended stop on historic Arthur Ave. read more

Great dinner out with friends. Only negative is the noise level, it is a little loud and you have to talk loudly to hear anyone . Other than that, the food was very good, presented well, good menu with vegetarian options pleasant, good environment. On line, they do not list all the regular fish dishes they have, but they have a good amount. Staff was friendly and attentive. Interior is nice, very large dining room with a separate room for parities/ catering. You def need a reservation on a Saturday night! It's bustling. It's right on Arthur avenue , so very convenient. We always wanted to try a good authentic Italian Restaurant in the Bronx, so we drove an hour and a half from"upstate" Ny to try Mario's. Wow did it live up to the hype and expectations we had in our head. The service was awesome front the beginning to the end. The Burrata with Tomato was to die for. What a waste of time. Arrived at 5pm on a Sunday (today) and was seated right away outside as a party of two. There were a few tables open outside and plenty of tables available inside. We ordered their house salad, fra Diavolo, and linguini clams. That's it. Got the salad within ten minutes. Nothing special. 40 minutes go by now and still no pasta. The waiter came over and said the food is being worked on and will be out shortly. This is now 550pm. It's now 605pm. He comes back out and says five more minutes. Okay fine. 10 more minutes go by and he says 3 minutes. Now it's getting ridiculous. I said okay you said that 20 minutes ago so what's the deal? If the food hasn't even been started on please just let us know so we can go. He goes back and checks and comes out again and said the food still hasn't been made. So he lied to us several times saying it was in the works in the back and saying just a few minutes. We ask to speak to the manager and she came out saying they are very busy and everything is made to order. It's pasta with clams and shrimp. That does not take over an hour for a restaurant to get together. We told her the waiter said that the kitchen still hasn't started on our food and she tried to say "noo that can't be true". At this point we were so fed up we said we were leaving and would not be paying for the salad that we ate now an hour prior. Mario's Restaurant located in the east side of the Bronx in what is called Little Italy. My choice was spaghetti with meatballs because I have being comparing the tenderness of the meatballs, considering the flavor. Mario's spaghetti with meatballs was simply delicious, but the meatballs were a bit hard. I love meatballs to be soft in the inside. This dish takes you to childhood because who has not eaten spaghetti with meatballs as growing up as a favorite from mom?. The chicken parmigiana was tender. The spaghetti sauce was perfect. I grew up on Hughes Ave. around the corner. Mario's is one of the finest places on the Avenue. Hands down one of the best!!

Mario's restaurant was amazing. We got recommended to go there for our dinner from the owner of Mike's Deli next door. And we loved it! Thank you so much for that great recommendation! All the waiter were so nice and offered us things which weren't even on the menu. We really wanted pizza so they made us instead of the small appetizer pizza which is on the menu, a medium one. Anyone who dines here and doesn't give them a five star rating must not have tastebuds. My family has been dining here for 61 years - 4 generations! Had the clams oreganato (chopped), spedini alla romano (look it up), fried calamari, fried meatballs with cherry peppers (to die for) to start. The gnocchi were like little pillows of yumminess. Veal Marsala cut with a fork. I could go on and on. The best red sauce ever. Delicious cannolis and "lemon shell" for dessert. I have commented in the past about Mario's and how good it was, but we went there for lunch on 9/14 and we were very disappointed. The service was great. We(5 of us) were there celebrating a birthday. We arrived about 1:15 and it was after any lunch rush. We ordered some clams oreganata and a small cheese pizza for appetizers. The clams were good but we think Dominick's across the street have better flavor but Mario's are bigger. The pizza was also very good. The entrees were met. The linguini with clams was good not great. Again Dominicks is better. The veal francese looked anemic on the plate, the lasagna was good but the veal saltimboca was horrible. It is supposed to be in a brown sauce, but it came with a green watery liquid. They probably boiled the spinach and didn't drain it and it ruined the whole dish. The birthday boy really wanted the saltimboca too. Our waiter brought out a dessert for the birthday boy which was good. We will probably go to another restaurant next time. This restaurant has everything! The ambiance, the great food, the tradition and history. What an exceptional place it is! My friend and I stopped for lunch yesterday. We were both very happy with the carrot sticks and the exceptional bread we got before our meals arrived. We ordered chicken Francese and gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce. I honestly never had gnocchi like these! Light and pillowy and full of flavor and the sauce was excellent, too. My friend, whose roots are Italian, is very familiar with how the "real thing" should taste and she loved her chicken, and everything else, too. Everything was fresh and expertly prepared, with pride and a nod to the past The best part was the feeling of being welcome, like you came to visit your friends, who just enjoy having you there. So I think I'm done making the effort to like Mario's. They overcharge for one thing ... $25.50 for lasagna?? And it wasn't even good!! It was like 1/2 the number of layers as lasagna should be. Mediocre at best. My pizzeria makes an order of lasagna better and larger portions for half the price. The gnocchi was over cooked and mushy. Yuck. The sautéed spinach was clearly not done on the spot but warmed over so the garlic was weak and tasteless. The best thing about the meal was the bread. And I'm pretty sure some great bakery nearby made that! So for almost $70 (!!!) we had mediocre takeout and were super disappointed by how much money we had spent. Mario, start working on impressing people again!! It's what made you great years ago!! But I'm sorry I'm not impressed now. And I used to come here all the time and lately just tell myself maybe they're having a bad day or a sub in the kitchen but now it's like they really don't care and are just phoning it in bc they are on Arthur Avenue. read more

With all of the "new Italian" places in this city, like Eataly and the Neapolitan pizza places, it is nice to go back in time to something familiar and nostalgic to those of us with NYC/Bronx-Italian heritage. Mario's is the definition of old-school Italian-American: somewhat dimly lit, off-white walls, Dean Martin and Sinatra playing softly in the background. Wonderful. Our waiter brought us bread and sliced carrots in white vinegar with garlic - very tasty. We ordered the calamari casuola and the chicken parm with a side of pasta. The food was delicious. We tore through our plates of food. The service was fine, no complaints at all. We had a fantastic experience at Mario's. It brought back me back to when I was a kid and would go to places like this with my family - all the memories of spending time with family. I've been to Mario's a bunch of times over the years, and happened to go back last week when we had family in town. Mario's vibe is a trip. They definitely haven't updated the look since the early 1980s, which is oddly awesome. It reminds me of the typical "nice" Italian joint from back in the day; classic Italian-America menu, heavy white tablecloths, dark decor, and staff full of old timers who seem to have worked there for 50 years. While I liked Mario's a lot in the past, I have to say that this time my impression was not as favorable. First, the service was terrible. It wasn't even a peak time (there were maybe 10 people in the room) and they had plenty of waiters milling around, but it took forever to place and get our orders. They were even slow to bring out drinks and bread. When the food finally arrived, it was generally OK. Some people loved their dishes (the gorgonzola topped gnocci was a big favorite) but others were not that remarkable, (like the veal scallopini pizzaiolo). It's hard to complain all that much though, since the $13.95 lunch special is a pretty good deal considering how much chow you get. Each dish was easily 2 portions. In the end, Mario's is a respectable place to grab a meal. But I'd definitely recommend going for the cheaper lunch or dinner specials, so you're not on the hook for that much if the meal turns into a disappointment. read more

The main course was swell and they had a dessert tray that I think is adequate for introducing people to Italian desserts. So I finally got around to coming back to Mario's, this time as part of a pizza tour group. We just came to get pizza, and the place hasn't changed its decor--big surprise there. However we did get there early, so the older, experience waitstaff hadn't gotten there yet. For the first time ever here I didn't like the service. The waiter we got was a carpet-bagging, fresh off the boat Italian douchebag who was rude to us and who bullied around his staff. I wish the owner hadn't walked out as we were coming in (said hi, friendly as always) or I would've said something to him. However, as I was with friends, I let it slide and tipped accordingly. Anyway, this guy made us order an appetizer with the pizza we got even though it was lunch time and they don't have a problem with you ordering just pizza during lunch normally. I don't care so much about this so much as how he went about it. We got the combo antipasto made up for four people, and the food was great as usual. Fresh and light fried calamari, eggplant rollatini, baked clams, sundried tomatos, homemade fresh mozzarella, asparagus, roasted red peppers, stuffed mushrooms: it was a great spread, although a bit pricey. The bread, from Addeo's bakery down the street, was phenomenal as always, and I ended up taking a loaf home as usual. People have been saying Mario's has the best pizza in the Bronx, and I'm inclined to agree thus far. It was crisp, light, and superbly balance with a delicious tomato suace and great quality processed mozzarella. I would compare it somewhat to Johnny's in Mount Vernon but not quite on that level (but damn close), and also to John's in Elmhurst for its crust. It has a lot of character and depth, although the outer rim was a bit too crisp and could have been more airy. I would love to try one of these with their homemade mozzarella and homemade sausage sometime. The food here is still one of the standouts of Arthur Ave, but if you're reading this Joe, make sure these new guys you're bringing in are shown the ropes in regards to how to treat people. The stuff you serve here is better than all those other Italian places that try to bombard you with authenticity. I know that old school waiters are a dying breed, but the new generation needs to learn from them while they can or a large amount of Italian-American restaurant tradition will be lost. Change doesn't have to be a bad thing, but don't make it for the worse. I will be back again because I know better about this place and ther food is that great, but I will make sure to get one of the old school waiters next time (Danny). read more

I know that times are tough during Covid, and that they had to replace all the wait staff, but things are just not the same as they used to be. It took 45 minutes just to get an appetizer and this was for a late afternoon reservation. Not a peak time. The food came with missing sides, and overall the quality was just not the same. With the welcoming waiters gone, and the food sub par, even the bread was old and not fresh. I think this may be the end of an era for me and Mario's. read more

Chicken Royale! Marios, is holdin it down! Place has a real classic Italian feel to it. Not sure which waiter people arent feeling, but the guy my cuz and i had was nothing but polite and respectful...a gentleman! Seriously, the service in the place was excellent! Everything from the water refilled to the in-depth descriptions of the specials! The food was amazing, the bread was slammin! Its gunna put a small dent in ya pockets though. It aint cheap! It IS quality though! The chicken, the pasta, the small pizza appetizer, all ridiculously tasty! Nuttin but a few crumbs left on our table! We ate like champs up in there!
