Capellini with red clam sauce was very bland, almost tasteless. It was the worst pasta dish I've been served in an Italian restaurant in a long time, virtually no garlic. The lettuce in the salad had lots of brown edges. Unannounced 3.25% surcharge for using a credit card. Restaurant filed a baseless complaint against me with their booking service, Open Table, for supposedly not showing up for my reservation, which was annoying. I gave this place a try because of its James Beard American Classics award, but should have tried one of the newer Italian places in the neighborhood. read more

While Living up in Dutchess county this has been my favorite place for a special day on Arthur ave This year we came all the way up from New Orleans just to enjoy our annual visit with a good group of friends and it was fantastic -- not surprising - but no small feat considering we are a group of 15 on a Sunday evening. the specials were again - to die for - we are taking a bunch of new ideas back down with us - New Orleans may have lots going for it but if you want it Italian like you get in southern Italy - This is our go to place, and has been for years. We attended members' evening at the Bronx Zoo and my husband (who grew up in the Bronx) insisted we have dinner on Arthur Ave. Mario's did not disappoint. We ordered the antipasto caldo for the table and my kids devoured the clams, mussels, and even the eggplant & peppers, which I'm pretty sure had anchovies on them! For an entree I had the manicotti. I don't think I've ever cleaned my plate I'm a restaurant before! It was so delicious I'm still thinking about it! Service was friendly and not at all rushed. Even though we were the last people there on a Tuesday when they were clearly ready to close our server asked if we wanted more coffee / anisette. What a delicious place for dinner! We stopped after the Holiday Train Show. We had no reservations but were warmly accepted. The free valet service was a huge plus. The holiday cocktails were amazing!! The bread basket was very welcome and the little bottle of olive oil was a great addition! We ordered a variety of dinners - my chicken parm was delicious! Angel hair pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce was wonderful! Not too sweet, not at all acidic. Hubby loved his veal parm and the others in our party were just as happy with their choices. After tasting each other's dinners, there was nothing left to take home. I left pleasantly full and extremely happy. A trip to Arthur Ave in the Bronx is a must for anyone visiting NYC, and Mario's is worth a visit. Mario's is more upscale than many of the other restaurants in the neighborhood, and the food is excellent. They have recently opened up an outside dining area in front, and have implemented many safety upgrades in the wake of covid19. On a recent trip to NY, we took the subway from Manhattan up to Arthur Ave, it is about a mile walk from the subway station to Mario's. We had a few pizzas, prawns, mussels, etc. and all were amazing. Staff is very friendly, the location is perfect, and all in all is a highly recommended stop on historic Arthur Ave. read more

Great dinner out with friends. Only negative is the noise level, it is a little loud and you have to talk loudly to hear anyone . Other than that, the food was very good, presented well, good menu with vegetarian options pleasant, good environment. On line, they do not list all the regular fish dishes they have, but they have a good amount. Staff was friendly and attentive. Interior is nice, very large dining room with a separate room for parities/ catering. You def need a reservation on a Saturday night! It's bustling. It's right on Arthur avenue , so very convenient. I have commented in the past about Mario's and how good it was, but we went there for lunch on 9/14 and we were very disappointed. The service was great. We(5 of us) were there celebrating a birthday. We arrived about 1:15 and it was after any lunch rush. We ordered some clams oreganata and a small cheese pizza for appetizers. The clams were good but we think Dominick's across the street have better flavor but Mario's are bigger. The pizza was also very good. The entrees were met. The linguini with clams was good not great. Again Dominicks is better. The veal francese looked anemic on the plate, the lasagna was good but the veal saltimboca was horrible. It is supposed to be in a brown sauce, but it came with a green watery liquid. They probably boiled the spinach and didn't drain it and it ruined the whole dish. The birthday boy really wanted the saltimboca too. Our waiter brought out a dessert for the birthday boy which was good. We will probably go to another restaurant next time. We always wanted to try a good authentic Italian Restaurant in the Bronx, so we drove an hour and a half from"upstate" Ny to try Mario's. Wow did it live up to the hype and expectations we had in our head. The service was awesome front the beginning to the end. The Burrata with Tomato was to die for. We both had fantastic meals and the portions were not too big, which I appreciated. It left us room for the most amazing cannoli! Totally worth the ride. We'll be back!! read more

Second time for me, but first for dinner. Still love that warm Italian bread with the sesame seeds. Anyone who dines here and doesn't give them a five star rating must not have tastebuds. My family has been dining here for 61 years - 4 generations! Had the clams oreganato (chopped), spedini alla romano (look it up), fried calamari, fried meatballs with cherry peppers (to die for) to start. The gnocchi were like little pillows of yumminess. Veal Marsala cut with a fork. I could go on and on. The best red sauce ever. Delicious cannolis and "lemon shell" for dessert. Drove an hour+ to dine here and would do it again as soon as I lose the 5 lbs I gained eating here tonight. So glad they are still in business 100 years strong!! read more

What a waste of time. Arrived at 5pm on a Sunday (today) and was seated right away outside as a party of two. There were a few tables open outside and plenty of tables available inside. We ordered their house salad, fra Diavolo, and linguini clams. That's it. Got the salad within ten minutes. Nothing special. 40 minutes go by now and still no pasta. The waiter came over and said the food is being worked on and will be out shortly. This is now 550pm. It's now 605pm. He comes back out and says five more minutes. Okay fine. 10 more minutes go by and he says 3 minutes. Now it's getting ridiculous. I said okay you said that 20 minutes ago so what's the deal? If the food hasn't even been started on please just let us know so we can go. He goes back and checks and comes out again and said the food still hasn't been made. So he lied to us several times saying it was in the works in the back and saying just a few minutes. We ask to speak to the manager and she came out saying they are very busy and everything is made to order. It's pasta with clams and shrimp. That does not take over an hour for a restaurant to get together. We told her the waiter said that the kitchen still hasn't started on our food and she tried to say "noo that can't be true". At this point we were so fed up we said we were leaving and would not be paying for the salad that we ate now an hour prior. Mario's Restaurant located in the east side of the Bronx in what is called Little Italy. My choice was spaghetti with meatballs because I have being comparing the tenderness of the meatballs, considering the flavor. Mario's spaghetti with meatballs was simply delicious, but the meatballs were a bit hard. I love meatballs to be soft in the inside. This dish takes you to childhood because who has not eaten spaghetti with meatballs as growing up as a favorite from mom?. The chicken parmigiana was tender. The spaghetti sauce was perfect. I grew up on Hughes Ave. around the corner. Mario's is one of the finest places on the Avenue. Hands down one of the best!!

Mario's restaurant was amazing. We got recommended to go there for our dinner from the owner of Mike's Deli next door. And we loved it! Thank you so much for that great recommendation! All the waiter were so nice and offered us things which weren't even on the menu. We really wanted pizza so they made us instead of the small appetizer pizza which is on the menu, a medium one. The food was good and the service was ok. But I don't recommend anyone to come to this place because the server was being aggressive about tip. Manuel tried to stop us from leaving the restaurant until we left enough tip that he wants. I understand tip is important but it is optional and ther server should be grateful that we tip. So I think I'm done making the effort to like Mario's. They overcharge for one thing ... $25.50 for lasagna?? And it wasn't even good!! It was like 1/2 the number of layers as lasagna should be. Mediocre at best. My pizzeria makes an order of lasagna better and larger portions for half the price. The gnocchi was over cooked and mushy. Yuck. The sautéed spinach was clearly not done on the spot but warmed over so the garlic was weak and tasteless. The best thing about the meal was the bread. And I'm pretty sure some great bakery nearby made that! So for almost $70 (!!!) we had mediocre takeout and were super disappointed by how much money we had spent. Mario, start working on impressing people again!! It's what made you great years ago!! But I'm sorry I'm not impressed now. This was a satisfactory Italian place. The salad dressing was zesty (as were the veggies). The main course was swell and they had a dessert tray that I think is adequate for introducing people to Italian desserts. This was the first time trying a restaurant in the Little Italy of the Bronx. We were late for our reservation due to a misplaced phone, but they were not that busy and sat us right away. We were greeted warmly and the staff was very attentive. Large menu with many options. Since there were three of us, we decided to order one appetizer and three main courses that we would all taste and share. The appetizer was an order of a dozen clams. The clams were large and looked great but they had no flavor whatsoever. We moved on to the three entrees. One was Shrimp Scampi, one was lamb shank and one was chicken Schiaparelli. We tasted the lamb shank first. It was cooked well but came in a watery, brown liquid. I make this at home and have had it in restaurants and it is usually in a thin, red gravy and very flavorful. It was served over pasta at my request instead of rice. It had no taste at all....we each took a taste and left the rest. We next tried the shrimp scampi . The shrimp were overcooked and tough and except for each of us tasting one, the rest were left on the dish. The last test was the Chicken. One of my friends said that was the best dish, but the other friend said the bread was the best dish. All in all, we did not leave hungry, but neither did we leave feeling happy with our dinner or satisfied. We all agreed we would never go back. You would think that staff would notice how much food was left and ask about it but they did not. We were very surprised as this restaurant had such good ratings on line. Prices were comparable to other Italian restaurants, but quality of preparation was lacking. Very disappointing. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for so many years. It used to be 5 stars, but no more. I know that times are tough during Covid, and that they had to replace all the wait staff, but things are just not the same as they used to be. It took 45 minutes just to get an appetizer and this was for a late afternoon reservation. Not a peak time. The food came with missing sides, and overall the quality was just not the same. With the welcoming waiters gone, and the food sub par, even the bread was old and not fresh. I think this may be the end of an era for me and Mario's. read more

The pizza was one of the best I've ever had. This restaurant was recommended by a good friend and it didn't disappoint. My sister and I were promptly seated. There was so much to choose from on the menu. We chose escargot and clams oreganata. For our entree she had the osso bucco and I had the veal over spinach and a side of string beans. Everything was delicious and were treated to conversation with the 5th generation owner (Regina). She spoke to us like family. The rest of the staff were also friendly and very attentive. Our dessert was Tiramisu and it was to die for. Worst owners and worst restaurant on Arthur Avenue. Everyone was incredibly rude and arrogant from the woman at the door when I checked in up until the owner when I asked to speak with him regarding a discrepancy of being overcharged. After ordering a salad and requesting to add grilled shrimp to it, I was charged the full price of ordering a shrimp entree. My friend added salmon to her salad and was charged the full price of a salmon entree. The owner said "Well you ate it, didn't you? So what's the problem?" Completely unacceptable. Not only did they not politely handle the situation, they did not offer any sort of credit or discount. They will never have my business again. Telling all of my friends never to go back again. Emilia's and Zero Otto Nove are all better options. I have never been to a restaurant with such poor customer service or such little regard for the importance of treating your customers the way they deserve to be treated. read more

I recently had the chance to visit Mario's on a food tour. This place is the real deal -- an Italian restaurant of Old NY. While everything was amazing, I'm writing this review to reflect on the pizza. The photo in Wikipedia next to "New York Pizza" should be changed to a picture of a Mario's slice. As a NY pizza snob, I believe this is the quintessential NY slice. The crust is so thin and crispy, yet folds easy for eating without breaking in two. The end crust isn't something just to hold into, it is an experience in itself. The pizza has the perfect amount of toppings -- a delicious, herb-filled, not too sweet sauce and real mozzarella.
