I don't often eat late-night Mexican in Marin, but when I do, I go to Marinitas. Actually now that's a lie. At this point, I consider myself a regular, especially for their late-night happy hour (9:30-close) $3 guacamole, $5 margaritas and then some. Good chips and salsa to start you off. I went to this fine restaurant with my wife another couple. We reserved a table by the widow. Our cocktails were brought quickly and our waitress was very attentive! Stopped by at 10 PM last night and experienced the bar menu. Kitchen messed up the order which was a salad and two different taco plates. The salad was soggy and wilted and while the taste wasn't bad, the texture ruined it. The guacamole was too mushy and bland and the tacos were not great. The crispy chicken taco was oily and not very flavorful and the steak taco was overcooked and tasted like it had been sitting waiting for us. When we asked for fresh squeezed lime margaritas, the bartender did a good job but it was light on tequila. We had eaten a mediocre dinner several months ago and thought we would give it another shot. This place is not worth a visit. read more

Like this place, good house margaritas, but wish they had a broader menu. The salads are hit and miss, the cheese fundido is great, and draft Dos XX is great. I think it probably does best as a place to have some drinks and light food with friends. Rest of the food is pretty good, just no stand outs. They are great with kids. read more

I would give 5 stars for the guac. Very fresh and worth the visit along with the Queso. The tacos and main dishes are good but the portions are too small. Their should be a third taco with the set of the two for the size and price. Also, service wise the two times we have been in lately the servers act like they are very busy when they seem to have more than enough staff on floor. Just had Friday Margaritas at Marinitas and as my friend said after the first sip, "Oh that helps to make it all better!" After a long week, this Supremo margarita is the elixir. Great appetizers to go with. We had the Queso Fundido with three cheeses, chorizo and chili sauce, very good! And we had the Peruvian Ceviche, flavorful with just a little heat. The tortilla chips are also very good - thin crispy and fresh! Great way to start the weekend. The food is still good, but the service and ambiance has gone way downhill. The last three visits, we had to wait almost an hour for entrées. Additionally, it used to be good for kids and families, but now they have added, in addition to the TVs in the bar, big projection screens in the dining room, which are constantly showing sports. Last night was the third time I've had dinner at Marinitas and my experience has been wonderful each time. The food is fantastic, I have tried almost everything and it has all been wonderful and consistant. My favorites include the guacamole (which I get everytime), the Ceviche Trio, and the Bifsteck Argentina (sp?). My all-time favorite dessert at any restaurant hands down is the Tres Leches at Marinitas. It's SO moist, creamy, and perfect, definately a must. The service has always been friendly and efficient and the prices, although not cheap, are extremly reasonable. The food, ambiance and overall experience is WELL worth the price. On average we've paid about $50 for a BIG dinner for two including drinks, two appetizers, two entrees, sides of rice and beans, and always the Tres Leches. That's expensive?? This place is not Chevy's and it's not the taco joint next door so if you're used to low end cheap mexican food with less than quality ingredients, then Marinitas is not for you. It would be very helpful for those of us who use Yelp to find new places to eat if the reviewers compared apples to apples. read more

The food was good, not excellent. The prices were inflated which is to be expected in San Anselmo. Had their signature beverages but not very impressed. I do like the lighting and the atmosphere. Our server was nice and did a solid job. I like "fresh" spots in Marin or whatever they're called but I would much rather have a burrito next door if you catch my drift. read more

First time yelping. Went here last night for friends 40th dinner party (guys )and wondered why we were going mexican and why reservations for mexican. Walked in and the bar had alot of young people like we were in a city resturaunt. Im not picky on food and didnt expect much but I thought they tried to be different and i got the lamb on mashed potatoes which I didnt think was mexican but it tasted pretty good. This is a nice place and one of the best Mexican restaurants I've found in Marin. The margaritas are made with fresh lime juice instead of sweet & sour, and they are so good. They have a lovely full bar and great wine list, too.... and the salsa's are incredible, (always served with fresh, warm tortilla chips). I always get the fish taco's or the veggie enchiladas, and they are great. My husband loves the chicken enchiladas in their amazing mole sauce...I totally recommend giving it a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

What; a delight to find a Mexican restaurant that seems to use nothing out of a can! Some friends in Marin took me there last night and I was so happy to find a casual, but delicious place to eat. We didn't feel weighed down by over-cheesy/over fatty food - so fresh and delicious! Even the tortillas are house made. The margaritas are made with fresh lime juice. This place shouldnt be called a mexican restaurant, it's more like Americanized Mexican. The only good thing I liked were the chips and salsa. The place is really dark too. The serving staff isn't the greatest. I find that the busers/food runners are more friendlier then the servers and are more attentive as well. I only saw the server about 3 times during my experience to take the order, ask how the food was, and then to give the check. The buser was the one who kept checking up on us to see how we were doing. Prices were eh ok. But not at all my fav place to eat when i visit the area. There is better Mexican out there. read more

Having heard some pretty good reviews from my husband's co-workers, we recently took our out of town guests to Marinitas. I'd have to say the dinner was quite nice. We went on a Monday evening so it wasn't crazy busy. We also brought our two young kids along, and it was surprisingly okay! The kids menu is practical and not too expensive ($3.95-$5.95). Our sons actually split the cheese quesadillas. The fish tacos were amazing, as were the tuna special and baked cod. We were all quite happy. The hostess and our server were very congenial and food came promptly. The churros and Tres leches cake were yummy as well. We were so happy with our experience that we're considering coming back for my birthday next month (sans the kiddos). Before we left for the restaurant, I read some of these yelp reviews and got a little nervous. I didnt want to disappoint our guests, but it all actually went really well. I wouldnt call the food "authentic" mexican, but it had a nice fresh feel.. a lot like Insalatas (same owner). I think our server called it pan-american or pan-something like that. I had the Carne Asada Taco's and they were ok. I have had better but as far as food in Marin goes they were good. The service was fair. I mean the wait staff checked in on us but wasn't very friendly. We had to wait along time for our drinks too. 3rd the cost is outrages. 2 steak taco's 2 chicken taco's 2 margaritas and 2 beers. $60 bucks before tip. That's all we had I thought that was a little too much personally considering the serving size. Will I go there again? Yes but I wont order a margarita it was nothing to write home about. I'm not sure about the Yelp 3.5 rating because our experience was 5.0+. We arrived early for our reservation and they seated us promptly. This was our first visit and our server, Marja, helped us select drinks. She brought us a huge basket of chips and salsa followed by our tasty drinks. She also helped us with our dinner selection. Every request to staff was answered with "absolutely" and a smile. Our food was served quickly, looked great and tasted even better. The portion sizes were just right. Well after our second attempt I decided to wait the hour to get in to Marinitas. We waited in the bar...service was ok but the drinks wer good. small and pricey with a ton of ice. We were moved to our table and was instructed that our appetizer was going to be brought to the table and taken care of...well, my husband had to bring it over himself. It was disappointing when we saw our ceveche trio...two of them were filled with lettuce and a no ceviche. They were missing flavor. We ordered and were told they were out of the Cod but could do a fish taco (that had cod). When they arrived they were the smallest tacos I have ever seen. We finished our meal and heard about their amazing desserts. Well lets just say the service was off for we were given our check and told thank you, never heard the words...would you like dessert or coffee. It was not a good first impression. We have been waiting for a new place to come to San Anselmo, we visit Insalatas weekly so we knew it would be nothing but great. I went to eat here about a week ago and I was blown away by the food. I had the lamb shank, which was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. I also had the camarones appetizer that had a delicious, well-balanced sauce with just the right amount of garlic and citrus zest without being overpowering. Plus their salsas (home made I believe?) were good to nibble on. I appreciate the fact that the portions aren't gigantic - other reviews say that the portions are small, but i ate to my hearts content and STILL had some left over to enjoy the next day. I really like the look and the feel of the restuarant - the decor was sleek and sexy and the lighting is cool and intimate. Plus how can you object with a fireplace with horns over it? Awesome. I think this restaurant has real promise - they are still working out some of their kinks but all the dishes I saw come out looked amazing. We went a couple of weeks after opening and went about 3:30 because we had heard of the crowds. The bar menu is substantial and the empanada was the most delicious I have ever had.
