Went to this optometrist to get a new contact lens prescription and it turned out this guy was a…read moresalesman. While the office was equipped with the latest automatic eye-checking equipment and the nurses were generally nice as well, dealing with Steven was another story. I've been wearing Acuvue 2's for the last 5 years or so and have been very happy and comfortable with them. Steven started off by telling me that Acuvue 2's are outdated technology, that my eyes need to get more oxygen during the day, while I told him that I'm very content with the Acuvues and would like a prescription for that. However he insisted that I try out a pair of super expensive Cooper Visions that he sells at his office for a week to let me know how they feel. I relented, wore them for a week and came back letting him know they were fine but that I would still like a prescription for the Acuvue 2s. At this point, he started raging like he was on 'roids--how dare I challenge his expertise (I pointed out that its the most popular contact in America, cited a study that says that it has greater oxygen permeability than most of the popular contacts, and told him that I'm content to use it until it gets phased out). He then asked me why I'm so insistent on getting Acuvue 2s and I let him know that I would like to buy them elsewhere and Cooper Visions are hard to get elsewhere and more expensive. He then started arguing with me how dangerous it is to be buying contacts on the Internet and how he would never recommend it for any of his patients. And then finally, he says I'll write you a prescription but you need to sign a release notice absolving from all fault in case something happens to your eyesight while you wear them, as if I'm being the most reckless person out there. I agree because I just want my prescription and to be out of his office, and he handwrites a note that I end up signing (ps, this is actually illegal as I found out per the Contact Lens Consumers Act - http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2004/06/contactlens.shtm ). He hands me a prescription for Acuvue 2, which I glance over before leaving and its completely wrong and different from my old ones that I luckily brought with me! I had to stop him from leaving the room and made sure he gave me the right prescription. He then left, slamming the door on me... Apparently, a lot of optometrists out there are full-time salesmen like Steven Sikalis (ie here's a blog entry with an experience similar to mine at another optometrist http://thecadfiles.net/2008/02/06/whats-up-doc/ ) so be careful and be sure to know all of your rights before setting up an appointment (read http://www.yourlifemagazine.com/beauty20405.html , http://www.1800contacts.com/docAndRx/docrx-prescription.shtml , and http://www.1800contacts.com/docAndRx/DocRx-release.shtml) Good luck!
