pretty good mexican place, close to downtown hotels. signature margarita drinks, i do like the option to make your own combination plate, get to try a bit of everything. portion is great and taste good too. perhaps booth and furniture could get a bit update

Food is simply amazing ... service is amazing ... LOVE THIS PLACE ... food is excellence

Free chips and salasa

This is my go to spot after I get off work. Usually it's pretty lit here. The music is good, staff is kind, and their deals are amazing. AND you get free chips and salsa that's absolutely delicious. I love the amber dos they have on tap as well as the big sized beers. This is a fun hangout and drink type spot. Stop in and give them a try.

This was an incredibly weird dining experience. I should have read the reviews in advance, but my friends and I went here because of close proximity to where we were staying. The restaurant was playing music at an incredibly high volume when we entered (and it wasn't one which had a dance floor) and one of their customers started dancing near our table and flipping her hair that it got into my friend's food. We felt very weird so we decided to leave without entirely finishing our meals. From a service standpoint, they should have better control of their restaurant because we felt uncomfortable. I had also asked for black beans in my meal, but was given refried beans and food was kind of mediocre. I think they could have decent potential given their great location close to the Peabody in downtown Memphis, but they need to make significant changes for improvement.

Margaritas

To start, the Margarita's dip we got was cold and watery. I would not come here for food again. However, the Margaritas themselves were lovely and gave a liberal amount of tequila. The atmosphere was very fun for a night out, but the service was poor. Overall, I would come here for drinks but not much else.

Seafood Enchiladas with grilled onions on the inside

That seafood enchilada was THE BOMBBBBBB!!! And was beautifully served! The way it was plated I thought I was in another restaurant.. more like an upscaled restaurant! It was really plated nicely! My child had some plate that had three or five big ass grilled shrimp on them. She said it was even seasoned with some buttery garlic sauce! Her plate had chicken and steak and two types of tamales on them. Yall..... the food here is the bomb! But this service.. poor baby boy. I think he just lost his girlfriend or boyfriend or whomever was his significant other. His head was so in the clouds that he on three times forgot to bring my grandson's water. And he was so soft spoken like he had just recently been heartbroken. I should have been frustrated with the lack of service or the forgetfulness of service, but I didn't. I just really felt bad for this kid. And trust me they had a bunch of high schoolers working here it looked like! So you saw a lot of head Downs looking into phones. I guess I'm not going to make a big deal of that because the food was so damn good. So don't order in! Order your food to go and walk back to your hotel or Uber! But the food is very much worth the visit! I just don't know about that service though hahaha! Poor baby.

I called in a to-go order around 5pm on a Thurs night. I ordered based on their website. Got my total and was told it'd be ready in 10min. That was the first lie. It took about 25 minutes and a reminder to the cashier to check on the order. The second lie was the online prices. When I brought up the discrepancy, the cashier chuckled and said it hadn't been updated in years. Ok... Lastly, there's 15% gratuity after 5pm and 18% after 8pm. Even on take-out orders. The food was okay. There's better Mexican food in Memphis. Specifically Las Delicias. I believe this place might be known for what they named themselves after: margaritas.

Food was flavorful so delicious. Fajitas are amazing. For sure to come back before trip is over. Here for liberty bowl

Piña Colada

We've been trying to hit this place up for a while but never seemed to be able to be in the area when they were open. We finally had a shot after we left Anime Blues so we dropped by here. It was an off hour so it was mostly empty but there were still a few other diners. We ate our food and it was pretty good. Hubby didn't like his burrito even though he had changed out the shrimp for some carnitas but my flautas were delish! The plate wasn't as impressive as the picture but it still tasted really good. The mango salsa was definitely worth it. I def need to get chimichangas and flautas more often. The drink we got was cool looking but not that impressive in flavor. The food was pretty normal for a Tex Mex place but they have some interesting and unique options and platings that I'd be willing to return and try. To Try: Carnitas Dinner Pollo Parrilla Arroz Margarita's Pollo con Crema Fajita Quesadilla Eduardo's Fajitas Pineapple Volcano Fajitas Loved: - Margarita's Flautas Liked: Drink: Piña Colada Ok: - Burrito: California (swap out shrimp for carnitas)

Seems there's some weird disconnect going on I wasn't aware of... This location is now going by Las Mexicanos instead of Los Comales. Looks like almost all new staff too, that could definitely use some Customer Service training. The menu has a 3rd name on it that seemed off as well. I was not told to come to the hostess stand to be seated, no friendly greeting when I did approach the stand. Once seated, the chip & salsa dude was quick enough in dripping them off w/out so much as a greeting. Maybe he's the silent type? Who knows? 2 Now the real wait begins.... Nothing to drink nor any sign of anyone even slowing down @ my table to take a drink order. Maybe they were fighting to see who would take my order? ‍ I was almost finished w/the basket of chips, decided what I wanted and LAID THE CLOSED MENU on the other side of the table close to the edge, hoping someone would notice. I had decided if they couldn't be bothered to come by the time I finished the chips I was leaving. Magically a waitress finally shows up w/3 chips to spare. Placed the order for water and dinner at the same time. Dinner came out quickly but looking pitiful w/barely a full tablespoon of guac, tomatoes or sour cream. Cheap bastards! The flour part of the chimichanga was NOT CRISP, & I was given plastic utensils to maneuver this sad plate. I have eaten here MANY times as I live in the area so I am more than disappointed w/this experience. Not a single customer sitting in the middle @ the 4-tops & @ least 7 booths empty; on a Saturday night @ 8:00 pm. Sad that they have lost so much business, I'll think twice before considering spending my money here again.

I still can't stop thinking about the sauce station here. There's a private parking lot shared with the surrounding businesses, and the restaurant has around 15 tables inside. It is a good casual spot if you are looking to dine here. FOOD: This restaurant does not serve complimentary chips and salsa. It is $2.95 an order. 1. Torta Villa Carbon (4/5; marinated grilled chicken topped with grilled onions, grilled pineapple, melted cheese, jalapeños, and avocado): This was huge. I ended up saving half for lunch the next day. The combination of sweet and savory flavors worked really well together. 2. Campechano Burrito (4/5; steak strips and chorizo with rice, beans, lettuce, onion, tomato, and jalapeño): Steak and chorizo are always a winning combination, and this burrito did not disappoint. 3. Chirucas Chimichanga (4/5; two medium chimichangas stuffed with rice, beans, cheese dip, and your choice of meat, served with lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream): I chose the grilled marinated pork (al pastor), which was flavorful and satisfying. The server mentioned that the chicken version is their favorite. The service was decent overall, though it could be slow at times. I noticed a few tables waiting a while before servers came to take orders or refill drinks, and my drink was empty for a bit before getting a refill. Dinner service can get very busy, as every table was once full in one of my visits. Would I come back? Absolutely.

I don't care to lose money. I had bought a half off certificate from Sweet Deals for this place. They are selling the building now so closure is eminent. Gotta burn that certificate. I should have known when I bought it that we were in for a less than mediocre time. You don't have to give away food in a place like this if it's any good. The building alone should bring and sustain traffic if you don't suck. This place is gorgeous! Inside and out! They have an identity crisis going on with it though, you see. You can't have cheese dip, enchiladas, burritos, and table-side flaming surf and turf all on the same menu. WTH? Who thought this was a good idea? Anyway... I made a reservation through Yelp the day of. I got a confirmation, and then another text asking me to confirm again. I did, and it responded with a supporting confirmation. On the way there a freaking crazy ass straight line wind storm blew through Memphis and knocked the power out all over. 8-22-26 We almost turned around and went home, but were notified by my camera system we had lost power. We called to confirm they had power and dude asked again if we had a reservation. We again confirmed with our name and told them we were on the way. We get there 20 mins later and neck tattoo host guy is like "do you have a reservation, how did you reserve? I tried to call you and tell you that I didn't have a reservation". Yea?? That's curious.. I replied with, "we just talked to you". He said "it's ok, I got you". Thanks for the favor homie. Seated and the Salsa Cart shows up. I knew we were in a first class place right then! Some kid painted very nicely. Salsa lady asked us about what we wanted in our salsa. She then made our "guac" and gave us the salsa. She had about 15 items on the cart to mix in, but oddly, she used none of it other than an avocado and some premade pico she threw on top. Salsa was good though. During the wait to order the ratchetness kept building. We almost left before we got our food. Some dude in the same room as us starts to watch his Insta Feed at full blast phone volume. C was beside herself. I believe he got the hint as we were loudly proclaiming that he was being rude and needed to be asked to leave. He stopped after that. Food is what expected. I came for overpriced Mexican and they delivered 100%! C took two bites and was done. No one even asked why the whole plate went in the trash. Mine was edible, but probably because of all of the edibles I had that day. She had some version of chicken Parmesan but with salsa. It came with frozen fries smothered in Pace looking picante sauce. She said it tasted "fake and like chemicals". She offered me some, no thanks. I had the Tres Especial. I should have read more of the description. I saw steak, chicken, and shrimp and just ran with it. It wasn't that bad but it's available across the street at El Mezcal for 1/3 of the price, better tasting, and on a hot flaming skillet. This was essentially cool fajitas drowned in congealed cheese dip. They didn't bring me my corn tortillas, so it got cooler as I waited on those. Then my server disappeared for 25 minutes. We could not escape fast enough. I guess we will find out how much longer they pump money into it before they close. Never again! Two stars because I got $25 off! '26 - 103

The lamb sliders remain my go-to. They're consistently juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly every time. Paired with the crispy fries, it's a meal that never disappoints. This visit, I ordered a Sidecar, but the bartender didn't have every ingredient needed for the traditional recipe. Instead of saying no, they created their own twist--and it was absolutely delicious. Sometimes improvisation pays off, and this cocktail was proof. The salmon was also excellent. I ordered it prepared the original way instead of the new menu version that includes Brussels sprouts, and it was exactly what I was craving. One of the highlights of the visit was an unexpected surprise from our waiter, who brought us a sample of their avocado ice cream. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was creamy, smooth, and surprisingly delicious. It was a thoughtful gesture that added to an already great dining experience. The only disappointment? They no longer offer the flight sampler. I was genuinely sad to see it gone because it was one of my favorite ways to experience several menu items in one visit. Overall, Babalu continues to deliver excellent food, attentive service, and outstanding drinks. Even with the flight no longer available, it's still one of my top recommendations in Memphis. 5/5 Stars - Consistent quality, excellent hospitality, and a place I'll gladly keep returning to.

The vibe is just as cool and energetic as I remembered, and having that parking garage right in the back makes hitting this part of town completely painless. I sat down with one thing on my mind: their tuna club. It used to be my absolute go-to. I opened up the menu, flipped through it twice, and my heart sank when I realized it was completely gone--looks like they updated the menu and cut it loose. When our server came by, I must have looked visibly defeated because he asked what was wrong. I told him I'd been craving that tuna club for years. He told me to hang tight, walked back to the kitchen, and somehow convinced the chef to whip one up for me anyway since they had the ingredients on hand. Talk about elite, next-level customer service. While they were working on that, we started with the table-side guacamole. It's still spectacular--super fresh, completely customizable, and served with those thick, hearty chips that actually don't break when you scoop. When the tuna club came out, it was exactly how I remembered it. Perfect sear, bursting with flavor, and paired with those roasted potatoes. My buddy got the burger and said it was cooked perfectly, though the cheese on his potatoes made them a little on the salty side. Huge shoutout to the kitchen staff and our killer server for going above and beyond for a returning guest. Babalu still has it. I won't wait years to come back next time.

Reciently the restaurant has changed hands and the new owners have turned it back into a real Mexican eatery. Now the menu is awesome, and about half of it caters to vegetarian appetites. I have been coming here since they opened and just now realized, I wanna try everything on this new menu. We had the beef chili rellinos with mole and refried beans, which I don't know how they do it but the refried beans have no pork and taste like they're loaded with bacon. She opted for a a la cart selection of black bean soup, roasted poblano pepper and cheese tamale, mushroom, cheese and spinach enchilida served with guac and pico. And as soon as our server left with our order, we immediately felt like we should have ordered this or that instead until our food arrived. TBO. Everything was totally delicious. I guess it means we just have to come back more often and try everything else on the menu. My server was amazing even though we did not order alcohol... (I had the worst feeling that since this place was really a drinking establishment for so long that they really kind of expected to grab a Margarita). The bill came with an included 20% tip, which I would always do anyway but i'm still kind of eah about telling me how to tip... politics!
