It is really hard for me to see such a middle of the road start rating for this place. This was our favorite restaurant while in Memphis, hands down! We went 3x in a week. So good! The service was all very kind, and fast. Never an empty glass. The ambiance is functional, it's good but a little tired. But everything was clean, and tidy and appropriate to this restaurant. Those drinks were all just perfection so tasty. The jalapeño poppers are some of the very best I've ever had. We got the nachos twice two different times they were so delicious! So good! Skip the wings those were a mistake here. But otherwise the burritos were huge. Did I mention they have a 3 foot long $30 burrito. I wish I had the courage or family to have eaten that! Restaurant wasn't crowded. Smelled like cleaning solution as soon as you walk in the door and the whole time I was there. Food was good not great. I ordered a sweet tea to go with my lunch. They didn't even come back to offer a refill. If you pay with a card they tip themselves. Since they chose tip themselves $2 that's the only tip they get. This is a fun little spot if you enjoy Mexican food. I did not stay to take in the full experience of the ambience as I did order "to-go" but I did have a seat for about 15-20mins. I am bummed I did not take a photo of our meal, but I can describe to you what we had rated. I ordered the three tacos with chicken meat. It had a "cheese sauce" and a chipotle sauce which was pretty good. I did get a side of refried beans as well as the rice, those were tasty as well. There was another order for a cheese quesadilla, beans and rice which were a hit as well. Very basic but good. I did order horchata, which had a lot more cinnamon than I had anticipated. Once you get past the punch of that, it tastes pretty decent. Lastly, I did order churros, which I was looking forward to however, they were hard when I was able to get around to eating them, which was disappointing. This was an incredibly weird dining experience. I should have read the reviews in advance, but my friends and I went here because of close proximity to where we were staying. The restaurant was playing music at an incredibly high volume when we entered (and it wasn't one which had a dance floor) and one of their customers started dancing near our table and flipping her hair that it got into my friend's food. We felt very weird so we decided to leave without entirely finishing our meals. From a service standpoint, they should have better control of their restaurant because we felt uncomfortable. I had also asked for black beans in my meal, but was given refried beans and food was kind of mediocre. One of the Worst Dining Experiences I've Had - Hidden Fees & Flavorless Food This place was disappointing from start to finish. First, no water was brought to the table -- not even after we were seated and ordering, which is something every decent restaurant offers by default. The chicken I ordered was dry and completely flavorless. I also asked for a side of pico de gallo and jalapeños -- they never mentioned there would be an upcharge, but they added $1.75 for the pico and $1.25 for the jalapeños. The pico wasn't even good -- oddly sweet and not fresh. Then the receipt came... and they had already added a 15% tip without saying a word. On top of that, a mystery charge appeared after I paid with a credit card, increasing the total. When I asked about it, one staff member called it a "service fee," and the manager later said it was a "credit card fee." No clear answer, no upfront disclosure. In total, I was charged several extra fees I was never told about. That's incredibly shady and not how a restaurant should do business. Be transparent with your customers! Between the poor food, surprise charges, and lack of accountability, I can't recommend this place at all. This place seems more focused on sneaking in fees than serving good food or treating customers fairly. There are so many better restaurants in the area -- with better food, service, and honesty. We came to Margarita's because of location. Stayed at the Peabody and this was just across the street. Went here around two for a late lunch for four people, Friday afternoon. First, we ordered the "lunch special all you can eat" for $8.99. Started with three items each, and they have drink specials every day, including BOGO margaritas (didn't try these though). We are Texans, so a little picky on our Mexican food. The chile rellenos were some of the best our group had ever had. The tamales, both pork and chicken, were excellent. We had soft tacos, tostadas, crispy tacos. All were tasty, as were the complimentary chips and salsa (mild and flavorful). Would return, and highly recommend! read more

The best thing we enjoyed was the two for one beer special that was available on Wednesday. That brought the review from one to two stars. Otherwise - our waiter could not communicate effectively with us, the food was very bland. Did not have any Mexican seasoning. No flavorings of onion, garlic, cumin or anything else. Little to no cheese on taco salad. Serving sizes kind of small. The tipping kind of confusing. 15 percent on parties of more than 8 automatically applied. And it seems like after 8 and ADDITIONAL 18 percent on top of the 15 percent tip is added. Thanks heavens we were 7 and it was not yet 8 o'clock. I like to choose what I tip and have tipped up to 30 percent - but this seems a bit ridiculous. I do not think the food is really good enough to support going back. Across the street from The Peabody. We stopped in on a weekday at around 3 o'clock. Little did we know that this is when their nightly Happy Hour begins. We were stopping for margaritas anyways so this was perfect. Our party of 3 enjoyed a pItcher of margaritas on the rocks. Very good mix of margarita !!! We also had their chips and salsa. We've been trying to hit this place up for a while but never seemed to be able to be in the area when they were open. We finally had a shot after we left Anime Blues so we dropped by here. It was an off hour so it was mostly empty but there were still a few other diners. We ate our food and it was pretty good. Hubby didn't like his burrito even though he had changed out the shrimp for some carnitas but my flautas were delish! The plate wasn't as impressive as the picture but it still tasted really good. The mango salsa was definitely worth it. I def need to get chimichangas and flautas more often. The drink we got was cool looking but not that impressive in flavor. The food was pretty normal for a Tex Mex place but they have some interesting and unique options and platings that I'd be willing to return and try. DO NOT EAT HERE! DO NOT EAT HERE!!! DO NOT EAT HERE!!! First, they charge %15-18 gratuity before you sit down to ensure "quality service." Shouldn't the customer receive quality service regardless of the amount of the tip. Second, the menu is not accurate- it is actually deceptive. There are menu items which include "scallops," or "crabmeat" in the description. The scallops are bay scallops, which mean they are the very small version of scallops. And the crabmeat is fake, imitation crabmeat, which they will not tell you about when you order. It's only after you order, receive your food, and taste your food and then ask the waiter if the crab is real- to which the waiter then has to go back to the kitchen to find out that the "crab" is not real crab meat. Mind you, I ordered the seafood fajitas. Before I placed the order, I specifically asked the waiter if this meal was good. He said, "yes." The order came and I noticed the scallops were small, tough and burnt. I was hungry and figured because it was a fajita that's why the scallops were like that. I took a forkful of rice and beans, and a forkful of the "seafood," and put it in a fajita. I took two bites and realized something was off. I called the waiter over and asked if the "crab" was fake. He said he didn't know and had to go check with the kitchen. He came back and said that the "crab" was imitation. Let's just say, the night devolved from there. I told him I cannot eat imitation crabmeat and asked to speak to the manager. He said the manager is not there and doesn't come in for another hour. I asked what are we going to do because what the menu states is not what is actually provided, and I haven't eaten the meal. The waiter said, "I don't know." My party finished their food and I asked the waiter for the check. I asked him to please remove the food from the check. He said he was unable to do so. I asked for the manager again, and he said "he's not here." I asked for someone who can make a decision and a lady came. She was unhelpful and stated that she's been to many restaurants that have "crab" listed on their menus but it's fake crab. I told her the menu was deceptive and she said that we have to pay for the meal or she was going to call the cops. We told her to call the cops. A few minutes later the waiter brings his cell phone with Jose Flores (said to be the owner) on the phone. He was downright rude. Needless to say, the cops were called. Six of Memphis' finest arrived. The restaurant said we did not want to pay our bill. We advised the cops that was not the case, and we were only disputing paying for something which was not what was ordered. I ordered crab and paid a premium for it. I did NOT order imitation crab meat. Why does this place think it can list "crab" as an ingredient in a dish and give the customer imitation crap (yes! crap, not crab). The cops couldn't help us as they stated this is a civil matter. The manager, Mike, eventually showed up. He began talking to the cops as if he had been there the whole time. He said he can't take our food off the bill bc you ate it. I did not eat it. I reorganized the plate to show just how much "crab" was on the plate. %90 of the "seafood" was the fake crab. (Pic attached). Mind you, it was at this time that they finally brought out the bill and the manager said he could take %50 off the meal. We have NEVER experienced such blatant lies on a menu, and such horrible customer service from a restaurant. We will NEVER return to this establishment, and will tell everyone we know not to patronize this establishment. Save your money and go to a restaurant with great food, real food, and great customer service. Note to management - if your menu states a meal includes crab, that means real crab, sourced from the ocean. Crab will NEVER mean imitation crab. Be honest! Stop lying to customers! read more

I visited Sunday after church. Ok don't judge me. I was on the lookout for mimosas ,but ended up with a full on stroooong mixed drink! Lol There wasn't many people there, so we felt like the royals with all of the attention we received. We got our food and drinks quickly, they checked on us frequently, and the food was served hot! The food was really good. I got the chicken nachos. They were good. I loved the sautéed veggies and the queso cheese topping. It was a very good blend. Stopped for a liquid refreshment and a bowl of soup on walking return to my hotel from my visit to nearby Civil Rights Museum. I opted for a red sangria ($9.50) and tortilla soup ($9.49). While I waited for both to arrive, a large portion of thin, warm tortilla chips arrived along with salsa. The chips were quite tasty and filling. The sangria arrived first in a huge glass that i needed two hands to successfully retrieve from the server. The sangria was large enough to be a liquid meal in and of itself. It was served with several orange slices and lots of ice! Quite tasty! Then, the tortilla soup arrived (and I thought the sangria was a gigantic portion!) It came in a huge soup bowl with tortilla strips served on side, a few lime wedges and a side serving of Spanish rice. The soup had rice, carrot slices and shredded chicken. It too was quite tasty. All that being said, the food deserved 5 stars, in my opinion, but I deducted 1 star from my overall rating because many of the vinyl seat/chair cushions (including one of the two cushions at our booth) were EXTREMELY cracked and torn. Not only did it not make for a good appearance, I couldn't help thinking about the germs and bacteria the insides of the cushions could be harbouring, Thus, an overall 4-star rating for me. read more

I enjoyed my experience here at the downtown location. In passing it always looks so busy, so I wanted to see what the hype was about. I went on a Saturday around 4pm. At this time it wasn't very packed or busy, fortunately. We were sat immediately by the host & the waiter approached us to greet us. The chips and salsa were brought out to us with no delay. The chips were warm & the salsa was fresh. We ordered the jumbo margarita special for the day & a combination fajita dish. The food was amazing! Drinks were good, and the service was exceptional. My only complaint, (which isn't a complaint at all) is that I expected the food to come out a bit faster being that the restaurant was not busy. I look forward to visiting again soon! read more

Their chips are thin and super delicious! Their salsa is pretty mild, should be perfect for everyone. We ordered their queso and guacamole for the table. The queso was very good, get it!! The guacamole was missing something, it didn't quite taste right. We think it was probably missing lime. I ordered three street carne asada tacos and their jumbo margarita. The tacos were good. Pretty standard. Their margarita was almost as big as my face! If you want to be set for the night, order this. Their plates are rather larger. A lot of my colleagues shared dishes. read more

Okay, this is my third visit to the Whitehaven location. We are happy to have this place in our neighborhood l, but I have a few things they could correct immediately. 1. They need a chip person. I have never gone to a Mexican restaurant and wasn't immediately give chips. This is big because the service can be slow. 2. The servers are not attentive due to the servers being assigned to too many tables. 3. Dirty bar. Clean the bar when people leave the bar. The entire time I was at the bar my space and the spaces next to me were dirty. Two guys came up and asked me if the spaces were taken and I told them they were free. The bartender still did not clean the spaces the guys just pulled the glass out the way. 5. 15% Gratuity is automatically added to your ticket after 5 p.m. even a party of 1. Interesting I hope this is common practice it all of their locations not just the Whitehaven location. For those who don't like reading a lot the moral of the story is if you want to actually get your money worth of food just make the drive to the Cordova location. Downtown location: First off. We were seat in about 15 minutes which isn't to bad. It was the fact that after we were seated, we had to wait a total 45 minutes for our waiter to look at us (that was after we brought it to an employees attention). My mom ordered the fish tacos which are described in the menu as follows. This description is not what we were given. We were given the fish tacos that had the shredded lettuce from a bag, a scarce amount of pico and 1 1/2 slices of avocado... on top of it the fish had no seasoning and no flavor and the tortillas were mushed up and soggy. When we brought up to the waiter that the food and description on the menu were 2 different things, he acted confused to what we were even talking about. I felt embarrassed because I swore by Margaritas to my family and was completely disappointed. So I took my parents to the Margaritas in Cordova and the tacos actually matched the description on the menu, they were full of flavor and are pictured below. Went here for lunch today. Only 3 tables were occupied. My two coworkers and I stood around for over 5 minutes waiting to be sat to a table. Once there another several minutes for drink order. As we sat waiting to give our order, we could see all the servers hanging out and laughing with each other. We had to wave them down to put in our food order. I ordered the Quesotacos with a side of rice, and on Thursdays they have a free small guacamole. The tacos came out without rice or guacamole, my coworker was missing part of his order too. When we waved our server down to ask for the missing food, he turned around and walked away before I could finish asking for what I was missing. In total we were there for over an hour on our lunch. The food was quite good, but the service was so terrible, I will not be back. The front of house staff were all young men more interested in hanging out. When we received our checks, I then found why he wasn't interested. They went ahead and charged the three of us each an 18% tip AND a service fee! For a party of 3?? Really?
