Marden's has been a Maine staple for such a long time. If you grew up in Maine or been here long enough you likely have heard or seen their famous jingle and/or could even remember the "Marden's Lady". Over the years I have visited quite a large portion of the Marden's stores. I will say I believe this is one of the better locations and one of the largest I think. For selection I would say this location has such a huge variety of everything you could imagine plus so many items you wouldn't expect! You will go in looking to buy say a pair of socks or a rug and wind up walking out with a hammer, garden hose, snacks, and who knows what else. Along with the variety you can definitely find deals that are cheaper than anywhere else. I've found you can find some of the best deals on clothing here. Some other items are just worth passing on though oppositely. Have had no major complaints service wise here at all. Friendly staff although checking out may be a bit slower at times. There is soooo much here. If you see something you want and you think you might want or need it, just buy it. The stock rotates constantly and there are always people there scouring for store for deals, whether they are buying for themselves or buying to resell. The store is as organized as they can get it, with things changing over so much, they pretty much just organize by the percentage of discount (center of the store) or by the typical "department store categories" The staff seemed to be ok. Very busy and focused - on products or moving customers through the lines efficiently. They definitely were all working hard from what I could see. The parking lot is always 3/4 full. read more

I love Mardens. Their slogan is no joke. I should have bought it when I saw it at Mardens. If you've never been, you have to check them out. They have everything here. Great prices. Basically they buy stuff from businesses that are gone under, or business that maybe had a fire or something and some products are damaged. It's a store. You can find furniture, tools, office supplies, toys games, fabric, yarn, crafts, shoes, clothing, rugs, sunglasses, books, food, and a whole lot more. I checked out quickly. Cashier was pleasant. Parking is a breeze, plenty of parking actually. Prices are super cheap. Great store. read more

I went to Scarborough to purchase an item, I picked one out that was priced at $11.99, I got to the cash register to pay for it and they said oh the price is wrong on this. We're changing it to $21.99. I said you're welcome to change the other ones on the shelf but this one is $11.99 you can't be changing the price on it now that I'm at the cash register to buy it and that's the price that you put on it even though it may be wrong, they changed the price anyway and said do you still want it... I have spent 10's of thousands there, but I won't be going back, lost my business because of $10, which I don't even believe was legal to do.. they claim it's okay because they are a salvage store... They need a sign on the door that says, prices are only suggestion. We can change them at the cash register at our will... read more

Marden's is a Maine experience not to be missed. I used to shop here regularly when I lived nearby and recently stopped by on a visit to the area. Thankfully, it hasn't changed a bit. The store is like a railroad salvage and Odd Job lots combined, but with it's own character; it's not a thrift store or flea market. The store is gigantic and has furniture, clothes, socks, shoes, boots, ski boots, household items, tools, toys, foods, kitchen items, snow shovels, fabrics, and so much more at better than bargain prices. Insane! Some of the shelves and aisles are disaster areas and completely unorganized---but dig and see what you may find! That is part of the experience. The prices simply cannot be beat and we left the store with the item we came looking for as well as a variety of other great deals we could not pass up. We then returned a few days later for more! This store is MASSIVE! I was let loose here for an hour and boy did I make a lot of headway. While I wasn't in the market for many of my killer finds I was shocked to find $200+ bags by Neely and Chloe for less than $40, Maaji bikini separates for under $40 each, Sonicare toothbrushes for less than $50, puma sneakers for under $25, and golf bags under $70. I also enjoyed looking at the camping equipment, toothbrushes, candy (Trident whitening gum packs for just 50 cents), and car accessories. Purchases included a couple packs of gum and a J. Crew bikini top for just $10. Staff are friendly and helpful, and the long lines at the registers sure do move fast. While this isn't my primary Marden's I will certainly be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

Never go into a Mardens thinking, "I need this exact item". Because really, it's a gamble on if you will find it, and also, find it in the place you think it might be. Better to go in thinking - I am looking for things that roughly resemble what I need. You will be more satisfied. The place is a discount store behemoth. Where do I make a bee-line for? If you know me at all, you know the answer is the fabric section. It has an impressive selection. I have sometimes found fabric there that I had seen in a more expensive quilt store a year ago. I can never go in thinking - I need something this shade of turquoise. Instead - I need blue. Good prices on the fabric - and if you are trying your hand at sewing for the first time, a good place to get some things without sinking you. read more

I love this place for fabric. There's such a huge selection and you can find something within any price range. The ladies who work in the crafty section know their stuff and are super friendly too. I just walked out with a bunch of soft, colorful and fun Dr. Seuss fleece that I didn't know I needed, but now I have a few weekends worth of baby craft projects and can't wait to get started! You can find other things here and there, like the floating laminate floor boards that we put under our washer and dryer in our finished basement. We also got some carpet here for building our own cat tower. My husband says its a great place for chain and rope, because there's more selection than the big hardware stores and it's half the price. This isn't my favorite Mardens (I once scored a KitchenAid mixer $100 off at the one in Madawaska!), especially if you're looking for shoes or clothes, but it's definitely worth a trip every now and then to browse. read more

My family and I have been coming to Mardens from all the way up in Calais all the way to this location here in Scarborough and we are always happy with our experiences. There are some really good things that come with this discounted retailer ... You can find so many diamonds in the rough with top notch items at really low costs throughout the store. The staff here is always friendly and approachable unlike some of the national retailers you find around the Maine Mall. Some of the drawbacks are around the cleanliness of the store and upkeep in keeping at so fresh and so clean ... It reminds me of the days when I was a kid walking into stores like Zayres or Ames. This last time I walked in to look for small stocking stuffers for the holidays and I ended up pricing some flooring that was very low priced per square foot and also looked into a comfy recliner ... So went in for stocking stuffers and walked out with furniture and flooring in mind so, now you know what kind of place Marden's is. You aren't going to find the most expensive and high end stuff here but affordable items nonetheless. read more

Produce? At Mardens? Yes!! There is now a produce section in the front of the Scarborough store which rivals hannaford in quality but limited in selection, depending on season and arrivals, just like all of the store. They often have local veg. But the prices are pleasantly outrageous. Dollar for pint of berries? Maybe two bucks if organic. We all know the deals here for other stuff and you have to rummage through dust at times. But not in the clean produce area. Same friendly service, too. read more

When we visit Portland this store is on our must visit bucket list. They have so much stuff, its ever changing and there is something for everyone.... sometimes even if you don't need it you found it. It's worth the time and effort to stop and shop. Looking for random things cheap? This is your place. You can find pretty good clothes here. On par with Marshals for pricing, until they go on sale. Then the prices are fantastic. A huge selection of fabric and crafts-cheaper than any other store. Home goods, toys, furniture and some pantry items. Great deals on most things but don't go expecting to purchase something specific. Inventory changes frequently and if you go home to decide if you should get it, it won't be there when you go back. There is also a fresh market with great deals on produce in the store. Store reminds me of Building 19 but slightly cleaner and less bad smells. Some Mardens are not as clean or well stocked. Marden's should always be your first stop when you go shopping for...anything really. It's the salvage store to which all other salvage stores should bow their head in respect. Marden's basically waits to get the call from companies that have recently experienced fire or flood damage, cuts a check to said company for their remaining salvageable stock, and then sends their trucks in to load up. Last time I was in the location on Payne Rd, I could have gotten my pick of Andrew Luck jerseys, because a flood had recently destroyed a sporting goods store in Indiana. This store is a shapeshifter of brand-name inventory, and they always offer items within the larger categories of clothing (men's and women's sections), shoes, furniture, rugs, kitchen supplies and groceries. They also seem to offer great deals of flooring, tiles and linoleum, but I don't have the wherewithal to comment on how great a deal this is versus traditional hardware stores. If you know what you're looking for and you see it at Marden's, I almost guarantee that you'll pay less for it there than at any other place. What I've gotten in my most recent trip: - Under Armor compression top AND bottom for just under $50 - Double-pack of large beef jerky bags for $8 - 24(?)-box of Larabars for $12 - Fancy Progresso soup for .88/can - 10 Kiwi shoe polish wipes for .50 I don't know if Steve Madden stores are more fire or flood-prone than other stores, but they always seem to get a ton of shoes from that designer. For those who are not familiar, Mardens is a huge space full of odd lots. Want fabric? Pillows? Housewares? Toys? Art supplies? Flooring? Mardens has that. All of that. The selection is somewhat odd, but extensive and inexpensive. I ended up in the fabric section because I sew, and I am coming here before I hit Jo-Ann Fabrics in the future. Regardless of what you're looking for, Mardens is a goldmine. I just love Mardens. This one is exceptionally large. Racks and racks of salvaged clothes, mens, women's and kids. Mostly in good condition, but some have stains or holes. Excellent prices and they even have some high end brands like North Face or Patagonia sometimes. It just depends on what they get in from salvage. They have a lot of home items from Bed Bath and Beyond in Louisiana from the floods this summer. Incredible deals. Not matter the household item I'm looking for, this is my first stop, then off to LESS affordable options if I can't find it here. I can't detail how many houses and kids I've outfitted from Mardens. Crazy good deals on designer clothing and otherwise very expensive items. I'm always a little skeptical about food items, but checking the code reveals NOT out of date. I can't say enough. As a Portland native, everyone knows you shop Marden's for the real discount shopping. New and refurbished, food and tech, clothing for any age...name it and it's there some place. This location used to be Wal*Mart mallside, but they moved when the complex was redeveloped. So this is even bigger than they spot they had out Brighton Avenue. The largest of the Mardens, and has a larger selection of stuff. Lots of clothing selection for men, and on my latest visit they had designer purses for 50% off retail. Bismarck's and Whoopi's pies for $1, and a surprisingly large selection in the electronics section. Worth stopping in for a quick look for a bargain. And this Mardens has a produce stand in the front! Limited selection of locally grown stuff, but good prices and great quality. Best melons I have had for a while, and only 2/$5. read more

I was actually on my way to another store and saw this place and had no idea what it was. I stopped in to check it out. It's a huge discount store that sells lots of refurbished items. They had so many George Foreman grills that were refurbished it was insane. The one great item I bought was an outdoor carpet for my campground! They have tons of surplus items. Yes, there are some truly junky items, but consider: This summer we bought both a first-class gas range and a microwave. Both on our second or third trip (we live a short distance away). That means they were marked down more each time. And how about my Chloe blouse that I saw while waiting to check out. Fabric Fabric Fabric so my heart sings! Just this afternoon, my husband was stopping to get some blackberries at Papa's (in front of Marden's, but independently owned)...He then went inside and found: Two sportcoats and a black long coat. Good stuff and sales. Yet, I'm here to talk about my trip there yesterday. It's about the workers. I'm trying to make myself feel better since it's 12 am and I'm thinking about it. They are just old, bored, annoyed women who have nothing better to do but be rude and complaining. Do they even get paid is the question. This is a salvage store so any item can be here... somewhere, and it can be in any sort of condition. If you are looking for a bargin, this is the spot though. The clothing can be hit or miss, but I have had some luck with shoes, but mostly... SOCKS! Nice warm winter socks, hiking socks, jogging socks. I love getting 4 pair of socks for $2.99. There is a large furniture section, but I rarely have luck finding someone to help me. Same with the rug area. You are supposed to ask for help with the large area rugs, but I have never come across an associate in this area so I help myself. There are tools, flooring, fabric, toothpaste and everything in between... even jewlery. This is a place that has random stuff at random times so you need to check it out and not everything makes sense on where it physically lays in the building. My tip: Post holiday gift box, tissue paper, gift bags, gift tags and wrapping paper shopping. I left with two giant bags for $15 last year and still have stuff I didn't use this year! read more

Watch out if someone hits your car in Marden's parking lot. They will do everything they can to avoid showing you their parking lot security tapes while denying any and all responsibility to help catch the person at fault.
