Reina is cousin to Rodnia Attiq (nee Navarro), who, with her mother Rosario Sotelo owned San Diego's El Borrego for almost 25 years, until they closed their business at the end of 2025. If you're having a bad day, it's worth dropping in for a bite to eat just so you can say "hi" to her. Between the food and the greeting you'll receive, you'll leave feeling better about things. So what to eat? Depending on the time of day and how hungry you are, you'll be pleased with Cazuelitas; Pozole Rojo or the herby Guerrero-style Pozole Verde; hearty Tlacoyos; large Enchilada plates; or probably my favorite Mexican dish, Mixiote de Borrego, which is lamb that's spiced, marinated and slow-steamed until it falls off the bone. I've eated most of those things and seen the rest on my fellow diners' tables. Nice little menu including burgers, tacos, burritos and more. There is no seating so basically eat in the car or take with you. I tried for my first visit 2 carnitas street tacos and 1 El Pastor beef street taco. I also had a Machaca Taco. The Machaca taco was my favorite of the three very tender and juicy and had fantastic flavor. The Carnitas and the beef tacos were also tasty but were a little dry. When passing through town and you want a quick bite or two this isnt a bad choice. I will definitely stop here again.

Teenagers were absolutely pouring into the place since it's right across the street from the high school. A security guy standing in the door waved to us and ushered us in quickly and gave us our own register ahead of everyone else, since we weren't part of the regular high school crowd. We ordered and got our food in less than five minutes even while they were probably close to 100 teenagers swarming the place. I met Stella who was guarding the restrooms, who says she has worked there for 45 years. The place opened in 1963. The lunch rush is total chaos, but she took absolutely no crap from any of those kids, and they were very respectful, especially to her. Every one of the staff was really polite and kind, even a mid the lunchtime chaos. All of the meat is local, and they butcher it right there in the kitchen. It is still the best burrito we've ever had, and we make it a point on our drives from Arizona to San Diego to stop there each way. Absolute perfection.
