We ordered two medium pizzas for the family (we split one, the kids split the other). The fact that we finished both pizzas and left hungry was disappointing. If you're looking for an old fashioned pizza parlor, this isn't the place for you. It's bright with fluorescent lighting and not a comfy environment. It seemed messy and nothing really flowed, kind of dirty actually. They have their following and that's great but I was underwhelmed.

There have been a couple times when they've been a little stingy with the toppings, but it's still so delicious, so I can't deduct a star for that. Their pizzas are really good depending on what you want. They have specials on Monday night. I believe you get a small pizza during happy hour. I had to go to Urgent Care twice and had X-rays to ensure I would not require surgery. They never called me back, not a care in the world to offer to pay for my medical bills. Story below ... I would never order from here again. I ate 3 slices then bit into something hard. I removed a small piece of metal with one end that looked like a sharp fish hook or something. I panicked and realized that I may have eaten other objects from the other slices I had already eaten. I went to urgent care right away to see if anything showed up on the xray and to my absolute horror it did. In my upper intestine there was a xray of the same sharp hook like object. The doctor told me the risks of intestinal bleeding if it got caught on the lining of my intestines and that it may require surgery to get it out, and if that was required it would be very difficult to find it, risk of infection, it was a nightmare. So for 3 days I had to wait and have this on my conscious. I went back to get a xray and thank God nothing showed up, so it must have passed through me. The doctor told me he was surprised it passed without getting stuck because of the fish hook appearance of the metal object. So I called BC's and spoke with the manager they said it was a family operated business and they would call me. They never did. I never tried to sue them or anything, I just wanted an apology and the owners didn't even have the decency to apologize and get to the bottom of why this was in my pizza. I was scared that this could have been in others' pizza too and not just mine. What if a little kid ate the pizza? How reckless and cruel to not even give the customer a phone call. I ended up filing a report with the county health department and they did an inspection and found multiple violations, which included not keeping the prep area clean and free of debris and no food safety manager on duty. I still have a picture of what was in my pizza. If you saw it you would never eat at a place like this ever again.

The sauce wasn't too sweet and seemed like fresh tomatoes, not the fake sugary sauce that you might buy in bulk. I love a good sauce but I am not a tomato lover so this was surprising. The other pizzas were just as good but we need to talk about the dough. The dough was almost perfect with a crisp bite, but not dry or rubbery. Again, not too sweet either but seemed to carry the weight of the toppings well and didn't cave in. Overall I would put Hot Rod Willy's Pizza at about a solid 8 for the entire experience. The cost was reasonable and I would definitely travel from Merced to Fresno again to snag a few pizzas. I would encourage the owner to take a look at Merced if he chooses to expand!

When they let us know there would be a short wait for a table that could accommodate our party, we opted to sit at the bar instead. The bartender (male, curly hair) was extremely friendly and made us delicious mocktails. They had watermelon and mint and it was fantastic and definitely worth trying if you want something light and refreshing! I ordered the Salumi sandwich, which is genuinely my favorite sandwich of all time. I order it every time I visit, and as always, it did not disappoint! The bread seriously couldn't be better, and all of the ingredients taste incredibly fresh. My coworker ordered the Alfredo pasta and said she loved it as well. It was definitely lively and quite loud inside, but sitting at the bar didn't feel overwhelming at all. Everything was fast, extremely friendly and professional, and most importantly, delicious. He admitted the wait was "ridiculous" and blamed it on the restaurant being busy, but that doesn't excuse ignoring guests for that long. We ordered the Mafaldine pasta, the Sprouting Cauliflower appetizer to share, a Coke, and a cocktail. The Sprouting Cauliflower appetizer was terrible--bland, unappetizing, and not worth ordering. The pasta was good, but it wasn't enough to make up for the abysmal service. Our Coke didn't arrive until about 20 minutes later, we were never given plates for the appetizer, and our server never once checked on us to see if we needed anything or how our meal was. After asking for to-go boxes, he disappeared yet again. Eventually, we gave up waiting and walked to the front station ourselves to ask for a bag and our check because it was obvious we had been forgotten. As soon as he saw us heading to the front, he rushed over as though he thought we were trying to leave without paying. He immediately printed the check and stood there waiting for payment. When I told him I wanted to review the bill first, he looked genuinely surprised. After I paid, I explained that we had a very poor experience. His only response was that he "tried his best." If that was truly his best, then Annesso has a serious service problem. We watched him provide attentive service to his other tables while ours was consistently ignored from start to finish. No customer should have to chase down their server for basic service, wait excessive amounts of time for drinks, eat a shared appetizer without plates, or get up and request their own check because they've been abandoned. The food alone is not enough to justify returning. Between the terrible appetizer and the unacceptable service, we will never be back. There are far too many restaurants that appreciate their customers and provide the level of service Annesso clearly does not. We will absolutely be sharing our experience with friends and family and cannot recommend this restaurant.
