It's been some time since I was at Mara's due to lots of construction near them. The stop today for carryout did not disappoint. The quality in the chicken pipian was excellent. So flavorful, generous portion, and hit the spot. The rice & beans were so good too. I never thought much about rice & beans, just something to accompany the main course. I stopped in for lunch today, probably for the last time, since they have to close. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce and horchata. The chicken was tender and the tomatillo sauce was fresh and delicious! The rice and beans also very good, as was the horchata. Even the salsa they serve with the tortilla chips is made fresh and tastes great! I'm sad that they are closing due to a new landlord tripling their rent. Their last day is Sept 19th at this location. They are looking for a new location. I hope they find one soon. The owners are really nice, and there is not another place in town I know of that serves Guatemalan food, in addition to their Mexican menu. read more

I love little hole in the wall spots with amazing food and that's exactly what Mara's is...had the Al Pastor tacos and they were excellent. Much more meat than other places and the onions and cilantro were perfect. My daughter had the chicken chimichangas and they were great as well, lot of meat inside with melted cheese. I feel like this place started off really strong but they seem to have lost their passion for cooking. To start, the store just smells bad, it has a very greasy, not been cleaned in years smelling the air. I ordered the enchiladas which tasted just ok, but they're were obviously just microwaved (I saw them being microwaved) to heat them up. I'm guessing they make them ahead of time and toss them in the microwave when they're needed. There really wasn't any sauce with them and the flavored relied heavily on the cheese that was melted over top. The rice was fine, but the beans had a very strong black pepper flavor to them. The two people working were extremely friendly and my food came out quick, I just have reservations when it comes to the cleanliness and quality of the food. If you're looking for a quick bite to eat then you'll enjoy this place. But, if you want authentic Mexican/Guatemalan food that's made with care, this might not be the place for you. read more

I loved my meal here. It was fresh, well made, delicious and Mara was so kind. The salsa was the best I've had in MKE, the chips were delicious, and she made me a vegetarian burrito that was seriously one of the best I've had. It was a Saturday night. We decided that burritos were necessary for our very survival. Enter Mara's. So, here's the thing. This place is amazing. It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall with incredibly limited seating in non-COVID times (and no seating during COVID), which basically describes all the very best places, right? They're not fancy, but their absolute focus is serving fresh deliciousness swiftly. My dining companion asked when phoning in our order, "Do you have any current specials?" Their response? "No. But, all of our dishes are special." We couldn't agree more. I ordered a chicken burrito. The chicken was perfectly marinated, flavorful, and delicious. The burrito was ample (I wasn't able to finish it all in one sitting). We also ordered their guacamole (because, the rule is if a place offers guacamole, we order guacamole). It is the very best guacamole we've enjoyed in all of Milwaukee. The service is fast and friendly and the prices are reasonable. In the warmer months, they have a couple outdoor tables. I've only experienced delivery from Mara's Grill. What I did experience was very good. I ordered the guacamole, because I can't resist it. Their guac was excellent. It was creamy and rich and filled with fresh ingredients. It was easily some of the best I've had in recent memory. While the chips were okay, they needed salt. But they seemed homemade, as they were thick and corn forward. I also ordered the spinach enchiladas. They were flavorful and also stuffed with fresh ingredients. Ordered delivery for a Saturday lunch. Carne asada burrito was huge. Stuffed with steak, onions, lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream. Three soft shell El Pastor tacos had well seasoned and sauced pork, onions and cilantro. Both meals were served with rice and beans. We were looking for some authentic Mexican food for dinner on a crisp fall night and a quick online search led us to Mara's Grill. We realized that we had passed the tiny restaurant many times in the past without noticing, as it is tucked on the first floor of an unassuming building on the corner of N 84th St. and W Lisbon Ave. The restaurant itself only has 6 small 2-person tables, but it boasts a steady inflow of customers happily ordering/picking up their food to-go. My husband and I ordered the Chicken Guatemalan Pipian and the special of the day which was a Green Chile Chicken Enchilada dish to share. We waited for our food while munching on the complimentary chips and fresh salsa which is always a great addition to any meal. What the Chicken Guatemalan Pipian lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for with saucy, rich, and complex flavors. Served with your choice of flour or corn tortillas as well as rice and beans, tacos can be constructed and subsequently dipped back into the plethora of sauce for each delicious bite. I would recommend adding in some of the fresh salsa too! The green chicken enchiladas were a nice complement to the Pipian with a brighter, more acidic tang from the chiles and tomatillos in the green sauce. I would definitely come back to Mara's Grill, although probably only with small groups given the limited seating situation. There's always take-out and lunch specials too! read more

There are many things to like about Mara's and perhaps a few things that could be tweaked a bit. If you plan to eat here, know that it's a tiny place and not really set up for groups larger than 2-3. That's cool as they do a fine job of take out and catering. The interior is simple, but very clean as is what I could see of the kitchen. Menu wise there's an interesting mix of Mexican items (tacos, enchiladas, tamales), some grilled stuff like burgers and a few Guatemalan plates. I opted for a nightly special that was described as "corn tortillas stuffed with chicken, with tomatillo citrus sauce, queso fresco and onions" for $10.95. The mister opted for enchiladas riojas for $9.95. Because we dined in, they brought us chips & salsa. As you can see from my photo, the salsa was quite foamy but tasted just fine. Since it's a small place you can see & hear all the action. In our case, that consisted of a LOT of microwaving which was really disappointing. Look, I know it's a small place and I know it takes forever to stew chicken so I'm totally good with that kind of stuff being heated up. But c'mon - throw the tortillas on the griddle, man! Because mine were nuked they disintegrated immediately into a icky pile of sad. That's too bad because the chicken was clearly good quality and the sauce was tasty (assuming you like tomatillos which I do). The husband and wife team that run the place could not be nicer - I definitely want to see them succeed! Price points on the Mexican items are probably a little higher than they should be compared to other local places, so I think Mara's might want to focus on their Guatemalan items since that's what makes them unique. Overall, I definitely liked it & will be back to try some of their other specials. read more

The guy/cook on Friday May 3 at 6:15pm that answers the phone is rude. New to this establishment wanting to try a different joint for Mexican food as I usually go to Bueno Burrito (BB), but after this encounter I will just stick with BB. I tried to order three chimichangas meal (beef, chicken and steak) but he said they don't do steak and so I was going to order the Vegetable Wrap but I wanted to confirm that it would be like a burrito. This gentlemen put me on hold, saying so I can think, excuse me!!! then when he came back tried to act like I didn't look at their menu. All in all. If you want rude service, or possible spit in your food eat here. If you want good food and great customer service go to Bueno Burrito. My fault for trying to try something different. read more

Ok I have eaten here several times now and I have never been disappointed yet. I am amazed at every time I have been there that it's not packed because the is food fresh made to order, I watched our food start cooking on the stove after ordering. It's not like chipotle where the meat sits in a pan until the order comes in. It looks like a small family run business and they are always very friendly and accommodate some one who likes to tweak the menu to make a combination dishes, me because the combination plate give me a wider sample of the menu vs just the taco dinner. I'm glad that they let me order a combination taco plate which was not on the menu and today I noticed that they one have combination lunch specials for $6.95, I'm sure that I didn't plant the idea but I liked it. It's a taco, chimichanga or enchilada ( ground beef or chicken ) with with rice and beans. I opted for the beef chimichanga and the beef enchilada with rice and beans. My first thought was that the beans were very tasty to me and I would like a larger portion next time. My lunch special was very meaty and cheesie, see my pictures. The lunch combo is the way I'm going from now on. I asked for some of there salsa on the side because it has a good fresh cilantro flavor which will complement my combo perfect and a side of sour creme also came with it. This qualifies as both a hidden gem and a hole in the wall restaurant in Milwaukee. The food is very good and as we call it a "production killer!" meaning you might as well eat hardy, enjoy the taste, and make plans to relax the rest of the day! We did beef burritos and chicken chimichangas. Plus we pushed our limits and went for the deep fried apple pie chimichangas (very good!) way to cap off the lunch. The entrees extra cheesy and large, about double the size of a chipotle burrito. Lots of meat too. Side salsa was average. We think it has potential to improve slightly.
