Mar's overall is quite good. There seems to be some confusion about the two locations of the same name, and this review is for the small, take-out-only location. The flavors of the food across the board are so much stronger and complex than literally all other Chinese food restaurants I've ever patronized. Their operating model, though, is confusing. They have a lot of "ready now" entrees pre-made for immediate service (think "Panda Express"), and several others that are made-to-order. The "made to order" seems to be the better choice, as what's in the "ready to go" section may well have been sitting around long enough to get soggy. I know this from firsthand experience when some of my General Tso's chicken was the last of what was premade, and the rest was fresh. Not surprisingly, the fresh portion was hot and crispy (and DELICIOUS), and the portion from the premade batch was soggy and lukewarm. There are two chairs in the interior for patrons, so be prepared to stand while your order is filled. I chose a 2-item combo with half fried rice and half chow mein (lo mein?), with broccoli beef and green bean chicken. THEN, I saw the barbecued pork and just had to add a side order of that (and I'm SO glad I did - it was delectable!) First time coming here. We met the owner Kenny. He is very friendly and told us it's a family run restaurant and they make everything fresh with no artificial dye. Their soups are made to order unlike other places. We got the 3 combo plate(kung pao chicken, teriyaki chicken, beef & broccoli, general tso, chicken pineapple & chicken mushroom) egg drop soup and hot and sour soup. We would rate everything 10/10. I was hungry for some General Tso's and they delivered! The chicken was good sized, cooked well, and the sauce was tasty. They did give me some sauces with a little heat to try. If you like some zing, ask about those. One was a clear and it added a little zing. The other was a red purée, not only was the flavor awesome, the heat was epic! Here's the short version. Mar's is fantastic Chinese American faire with large portions at a more than fair price served hot, fast, and with a smile. The shop doesn't look like much, but it's a sharp, clean space and they treat you right. Here's the long version. Are you looking for some classic Chinese-American cuisine? Do you hate waiting because you've been desensitized by this incessant need to have everything faster than what is reasonable and are also plagued by undiagnosed ADHD? I stopped by Mar's in the late afternoon after I got off work from the school on my way to a friend's place in downtown. Driven by it the entire school year and never stopped in. Figured I'd give it a try. Right off the bat, they had me sample an item they were still testing before having me order, then proceeded to hook my up with some killer portions. Mind you, I went from this place to downtown, so this ended up sitting in my car for a hot minute. Chinese food doesn't always sit well, but the ratios of chicken to sauce meant that everything stayed tasty and saucy without getting saturated and soggy. It was, in a word, fantastic. We called to make sure they were open today for Christmas Eve and they assured us they were and told us how excited they were for us to come. The owner and workers were so nice and offered samples and free cookies for our first visit. We got a big family style meal and it was the best Chinese food we have found in Vancouver.
