It's been 2 months since Manuel did some work for me - and I am still upset over the job he did that I had to write this review.
First, I must admit Manuel is a very personable guy and his initial quotes were reasonable. He told me he is a pastor and hires people from his church who needed money (TRUE.) He also told me that he likes to work only on 1 job at a time so he can work on it himself (NOT TRUE!) Above all, he told me "I would love the results and that they would be beautiful!" (Definitely NOT TRUE!)
I hired him for some minor repairs, e.g., fix a few window hinges, grout/caulk kitchen and bathroom tiles, refinish bathtub, and paint hallways. His work was acceptable (not great, as he did minimal prep work for the painting and used the wrong kind of grout/caulk/sealer - not the mold-free kinds I needed.) Then he persuaded me to also let him refinish my hardwood floors, and repaint my carriage garage doors. I agreed since he was already working on the house and, at that time, the minor work that he did was okay for a rental house. BIG, BIG MISTAKE!!! Here's what happened - some of which I found out later:
1) For most of the 2-week job, Manuel showed up only in the mornings to drop off his men and then returned in the late afternoon to pick them up. He told me he was out buying materials, but I found out later that he was working on another job. He left some totally inexperienced persons to work on my job.
2) He billed me for everything: in addition to job-related materials, he bought (expensive) ear muffs/face masks, paint brushes, cleaning supplies - including rags and a mop! He billed me for primers, paints and sanding discs, only some of which were actually used for my job. He gave me receipts that, upon careful reading, were for another job (e.g., roof cement???). As another reviewer commented, he never left those expensive paintbrushes (never used on my job) or any left over materials for me after the job ended.
3) He did not know how to work with vintage wood garage doors: he sanded away all the hand-routed edge of the wood panels so that, with the paint on afterwards, the beautiful doors looked like flat plywood!!! (He also didn't cover up the just-primed door up with plastic when it rained - as he said he would.)
4) When his painters ran out of paint at the end of the job, rather than buying/using a new can, they dug through some 10+yr. old paint cans I had in the garage and used whatever was the closest match (for example, glossy, off-white paint was used to touch up flat, white walls in the living and dining rooms.)
5) Here's the worst part: he rushed to finish the job and the result was a disaster. For example, I found scuffed rings from using sand papers that were too rough (and left unbuffed), areas of uneven wood stains, missing/dirty/streaking polyurethane that was roughly applied and, again, left unbuffed). Even now I still get upset when I think of that messy "refinishing" floor job that he did.
I paid over $5,000 for Manuel's job (unwittingly keeping only $500) - before the polyurethane on the floor dried enough for me to see the poor results of his work.. I estimate that It will likely cost me at least another $2,000+/- to repair the damage that was done and some, like the fine detailing on my garage doors, could never be repaired.
Given the painful and costly experience I went through, I felt obligated to post this on line to alert others considering using Manuel's service. read more
