Great food here. I got chicken tacos, and they were yummy. The beans were a bit spicy, which isn't that common, and the rice was a darker color than I am used to. It was all good, though. I also ordered pupusas. They were very very yummy, even re-heated later. They were served on a bed of cabbage, but I'm not sure if it was the cabbage salsa that I'm used to getting with pupusas. Whichever way it was, it worked well with the masa and fillings. They were cooked a bit darker than some I've had, but I think that made them even tastier than I am used to. I think I need to head back up to Captain Cook more often for Mexican food!! read more

I had the fish and eggs while my fiance had the huevos rancheros. The fish was spearfish, lightly coated and fried. The portion was small but just enough for me. My fiance was not thrilled with the huevos rancheros because the tortilla was harder then he is used to (more like a tostada) and the cheese, bean and egg was watery although flavorful. He said he would not recommend that one. We also got flan and tres leches. The flan was not and creamy or custardy as I'm used to. The tres leche was decent although the cream layer on top was quite thin....still taste and texture was good. The young woman who took our order was friendly and quick. There is currently no indoor dinning we sat outside and she brought our food out. They had both breakfast and lunch available when we arrived at 9:30 am. We will have to return on a Sunday for the Menudo(only available on Sunday). read more

Tried for the first time today and was amazed! It was definitely busy during the lunch hour and spent most of my lunch break waiting but you can call in orders which I will do in the future. Totally worth the wait, delicious and authentic Mexican food! I had the nachos supreme with steak. Fresh made tortilla chips and heaps of goodness for a fair price. This is the first time I've eaten at Nanny's since returning to the big island of Hawaii for being gone for some years and sad to say I'm kind of disappointed my landlord/boss was exclaiming for hours about their workshop and finally convinced me that I was also in the mood for Mexican so I went down and ordered his pork chop dinner and my fish tacos which is my go-to item at any Mexican restaurant because any Mexican restaurant work their salt could cook a fish taco or so I thought the rice looks like cauliflower rice because it is so overcooked and so abused that the pieces of rice are no longer visible just very small grains that could be grated cauliflower with not much flavor though the refried beans are great that is the reason for two stars instead of one the fish must have been put on the grill at the same time as my boss's pork chops because it is so tough and overcooked the homemade tortillas are also edible if not a little thick for my liking the bloodline of the fish was included in my fish taco as a nice surprise as well as some gelatinous material that I have yet to identify maybe just fatty skin tissue or something not sure still what exactly I spit out in that bite you mean communal as in what community you know maybe if they had waited to put the fish on instead of starting it right when they started the pork chops that took 30 minutes to cook or actually 23 that's how long we were waiting in the end parking lot maybe my fish wouldn't be so darn dry and chewy I mean I need at least a gallon of milk to get through these three little tacos really a bummer I don't know if I'm going to give them another shot or not read more

A friend told me about this place. It's a small restaurant with limited parking. Be sure to enter the parking area from the north side of the building, it's a one-way. There is a small outdoor patio as well as a dimly lit inside eating area. One star for ambiance. You order at the counter and they deliver the food to your table. The young lady who took our order was very sweet and polite. Our food came out quite promptly. Four stars for service. The food is just okay. My husband had the chile verde plate which came with rice, beans and some very authentic looking corn tortillas. I bet they make their own. Husband said the chile verde had some heat to it but that's a plus for him - he likes very spicy food. If he says it has some heat, that means it would burn my face off. I had the tostadas, there are two in the order. The tortillas appear to be the "made on site" corn tortillas, which were then crispy fried. The tostadas were supposed to be topped with sour cream but there was none; also came with a side of salsa. I ordered the lemonade which they make from sweet lemons, it was good. They had a limited selection of Coca Cola products, bottled water and two kinds of beer available. Three stars for the food. In summary, we will probably go again but not anytime soon. read more

Super stoked to see this place finally open. Have been driving by every day and anxiously waiting to see the doors open. Today I happened to be driving by and saw someone outside on the road waving a "now open" sign. I decided immediately to pull in (there are parking spots right in front of the door as well as a small lot behind the building). Walking in, you notice the Mexican décor right away. You also notice (I think this may have been left from the last restaurant here) the red and white checkered tablecloths, like a pizzeria. Super excited to see what would be on the menu and if it would be a "real" Mexican joint, I grabbed it excitedly. First thing I noticed was it was actually pretty small in size. Exactly 4 appetizers (1 of which isn't even Mexican), 1 option of soup and 1 salad. The soup (spicy shrimp saimin) is actually a Mexican/local fusion, which looks pretty good and I will try in the future. The second page is of their entrées, of platillos. Basically, you choose your main dish and it is accompanied by a scoop of Spanish rice, a scoop of refried beans and salsa. The back page is reserved for sides and beverages. I looked right away to see what Mexican drinks they would offer, but was sadly disappointed when only seeing Coke products and coffee, tea, and milk. I was really wanting to drink a glass of jamaica or sangría. As being barely open, there will be growing pains and more than normal wait times. That's expected, so don't judge them too much if you go soon and have to wait a little bit. I took my time trying to decide what to order, and looking at what others around me had ordered as well, to try and get a peek. I ended up ordering the "el huarache", which is a fried masa tortilla-like base, topped with meat, cheese, onion, cilantro and salsa. I went with pork, and it was tender and similar to chile verde minus the chile. Just a useless fact- huarache means sandal in Spanish, which resembles the shape of the bread. The taste and texture are really good, imagine something like a thick tortilla with the taste of a tamale. I enjoyed the huarache, and was excited to see it on the menu. It's not something you see in most Mexican restaurants. I would order this again. At $12.95, I would like to see this as a platillo option, and get rice and beans on the side. I also ordered a platillo of dos tacos (pork) for the other half. To be honest, I had seen someone else who had ordered the tacos and a burrito, and was underwhelmed by the appearance. The tacos were ok. There are some really really good tacos in town, so it kind of makes it hard for others to come close. I must say the tortillas were really good though. Homemade tortillas are always better. 2 tacos with the sides you get is very hard to pay $11.95 for, even in Hawaii, where everything costs more. Jaws will definitely drop when travelers see those prices who are used to much much cheaper Mexican food where they came from. I'll refrain from ordering these again. I did notice someone ordered the costillas de puerco (spare ribs) which looked absolutely delicious. I will definitely order that next time. Overall, I am very happy that a New Mexican restaurant opened up mauka, and I will go again. I do hope they tweak their menu a little bit, and perhaps add to it. Time will tell, but I have a good feeling they should be able to. A few quick small suggestions to the owners (constructive criticism)- don't charge $3.95 for chips and salsa. Do like almost every other Mexican restaurant does- offer a basket of chips and salsa free for sit down patrons. Refills can be at a charge. Add some Mexican drinks to the menu. Bottles of sangría (Señorial is a favorite), and homemade (or even package made) jamaica, horchata would be great to see. Even Mexican Coke bottles would be great, which are sold at Costco. Add a today's special board, so you can have something special that isn't on the regular menu. This will keep interest up, and give the chefs something to play around with. My favorite spot to get my favorite Huevos Con Chorizo. Not sure who was cooking today but Chorizo over cooked, no eggs, no cheese, that I requested! They didn't even bother to drain the grease. By the time I made it home there was grease all over the seat that ran out of the foil and through the bag. All I could think about all day was this burrito and it was the worst!!! We visited Manny's yesterday for the first time, and it was incredible! The food is delicious, they have great prices, and it is extremely clean. Unfortunately, no inside dining due to the pandemic, but the outside tables provide for a dining experience surrounded by beautiful Hawaiian views. The service from Kelia was top notch, very friendly and welcoming, great menu recommendations, a truly aloha spirit. Highly recommend anyone visiting for authentic, genuine Mexican cuisine!!!
