A few of us picked up a souvenir at a reasonable price. I purchased an oversized coffee mug for $11! I got the special...banana macadamia nut french toast with a vanilla drizzle. Delicious food with kind service. The coffee was super good with the macadamia nut milk. The papaya itself wasn't sweet and didn't really taste like anything. Finals thought it would be a yogurt bowl, but it was only a spoonful of yogurt. The eggs Benedict's had great flavor, and the fish tasted sooo good with the hollandaise sauce . The omelet was very cheesy and we loved the cheese pull. While the cheesecake was good, the crust needs work. It's pretty hard and we couldn't break it up easily. The food ranges from good to great at The Coffee Shack. The views are fantabulous, and the service is attentive. Baked goods are a house specialty and you won't go wrong with them. I've also had what was the best cappuccino in recent memory during a visit in the past year. Alas, the cappuccino experience wasn't repeated, though later caps were still good. At meals I tend to stick with the Ono Benedict though I've had the fish sandwich and can recommend both. The papaya trio is a good one for a lighter meal. I'll have to try the pizza some day, but I'm content with breakfast/brunch items usually. read more

I don't really know the area and this place was recommended by our Airbnb host. I noticed Hawaii has a lot of homey comfort style types of food and this is definitely one of those places. The service was friendly and quick. It's not luxurious and the food isnt any more special than other pancake shops but it's solid. What we ordered came as it was it was expected to be and running in there while it was raining made it even more delicious. Something unique was their papaya. I was not expecting whole half papaya not pre cut up but it was absolutely delicious. Not a normal breakfast fruit for me but it was a wonderful, delicious, beautifully plated surprise. For our last breakfast, we decided to stop here abd we were so happy we did. First of all the view for breakfast is amazing. It is a house that turned restaurant. I can imagine during busy times, parking is a dread. However, the service is phenomenal and we got lattes to start. They were huge and perfectly warm. Then we ordered the special of cherry Garcia franchise roast and the egg breakfast. The French toast was perfect and that luau bread was perfect. It was not too soggy and not too dry. I didn't even need syrup for them. The eggs and bacon were perfect for my mom and she got the luau bread for her toast, which she enjoyed as well. She said it wasn't overwhelming with coconut and carrots. It also had macadamia nuts too. Overall, I definitely recommend stopping here at some point when you're in the captain cook area. We visited this restaurant hoping for a pleasant experience, but unfortunately we left feeling uncomfortable because of the cashier's behavior. The cashier with glasses made an inappropriate comment criticizing how much we tipped, which was completely unprofessional. Tipping is a personal choice and should never be questioned or commented on by staff, especially in a way that makes customers feel judged or embarrassed. Regardless of the amount, customers should be treated with respect. The food and service may have been fine, but that interaction really affected the overall experience. A restaurant should feel welcoming, not uncomfortable because an employee is openly criticizing a customer's tip. Wonderful coffee shop cafe outside of Kona in captain cook. Stopped for a coffee one morning and decided to go back for breakfast the next day as it was close to the mango farm we were staying at. I can't say enough good things about the coffee shack. The employees are polite and friendly, the breakfast was delicious and the views don't even seem real. It was super sweet of our server to allow us to change tables to the window seat after a group left. Hawaiian French toast was top shelf as was my lox breakfast special. Fresh, delicious with homemade breads. If staying in Kona I'd recommend taking the short drive out to either grab a coffee or brunch from this gem. read more

One of my favorite places we visited on the island! Totally blown away but my omelette! I would've went back every morning if it was on the menu every day. The hot chocolate was delicious, it tasted like they melted a chocolate bar in a cup. My wife had an assortment of things, all coconut which I'm not a fan of but she loved it. We heard good things about the food and location. Everything we heard was positive and ended up being true. The food was extremely fresh and taste, the service was fast and the waitstaff are very friendly. If you arrive on a weekend expect to wait a while. Seriously, the only downside is the parking isn't great and it can be tricky to get on/off of HWY 11, they do have parking down a steep hill on the south side of the restaurant. We had a lovely start to our slow morning. The view, the people, the simple breakfast, and the coffee was the perfect start to our day! My boyfriend ordered a half order of French toast (5/5) and an Americano (5/5) while I ordered the papaya special (5/5) and coconut latte (4/5) . I delighted in a flavorful eggs Benedict. The potatoes were seasoned well & fluffy. The cook on the poached egg was perfection. We didn't order one, but overheard other guests loving their pizzas! We went one day and were quoted a 45-min wait so just picked up the cheesecake and lemon bar to go, which were delicious. Was advised we could call to put our names on waitlist in the future, so we did do that the next day, quoted 45 mins again so we wrapped up snorkeling at Two Steps and headed over. By the time we made it over (within 45 mins) our table had been called so we started back on the waitlist but the wait was shorter. We were looking forward to it on account of the rave reviews and excellent baked goods we'd already tried. Unfortunately we were disappointed by our brunch. We both got papaya specials as it was the most interesting item on the menu. I quite enjoyed the papaya boat, though expected more yogurt and lilikoi flavor. The eggs were sad and the coconut pound cake was rather dry, which was surprising given how much we liked the cheesecake and lemon bar. Most surprising was the coffee - super weak - given the name of the restaurant and the estate coffee trees below us. Lilikoi mimosa was fine - not sure it tasted like lilikoi. I'd recommend sticking to the baked goods and enjoying the view but wouldn't wait for it again. And skip the coffee. read more

I had the papaya plate which was such a unique menu item and really loved the papaya boat. My husband had the traditional benedict and enjoyed his a lot. The ono benedict also sounds really good. We ordered a cinnamon roll to go and this did not disappoint as a snack later in the day on our drive to the volcano. The service was exceptionally sweet and friendly, especially to my kids. There were a few tiny geckos that came to say hi at the end of our meal. We had a short wait of about 15 minutes which is not too bad for a Saturday morning.
