2 stars seems generous So much potential, no aloha: wouldn't return We were on the Big Island for work and stopped into Hungry Honu for breakfast. The place looked cute and we were excited walking in. That didn't last. No one greeted us or acknowledged us at any point. You order yourself on a kiosk, and behind the tall counter wall there were plenty of employees chatting and socializing with each other. At one point we could hear their conversations from the back. They showed zero interest in any,interaction and acted bothered almost when I came to discussmy acai bowl. I ordered an açaí bowl. When I asked for a dish to put it in so I could actually eat it, I dumped it out and found it was one solid frozen block of açaí scooped straight from the tub, with a light sprinkle of toppings on top. I brought it back and the staff seemed dumbfounded about how to handle it. They said they couldn't take it back, and if they made me a new one, they'd charge me for it. I asked for the manager, who came out and offered no fix either. I ended up eating what I could. As we were walking out, the manager said "Mahalo ke Akua" ("thank God") loud enough for us to hear. There was no mistaking the meaning: thank God we were leaving. I came back and asked what he'd said so he knew I heard him, and he repeated it with a smirk. From the person running the shop, that says everything. To the owner, a simple suggestion: put a bell on the door, and when it rings, have someone poke their head out and say Good morning. Encourage interaction, It costs nothing and changes everything. I'd also strongly recommend sending in a secret shopper or spending more time in the shop yourself, because what's happening when you're not there sucks. Everything is so expensive, it doesn't take much to do people right. Right now this place feels built for one-and-done cruise ship and tourist traffic, with no care whether you ever come back. No aloha in the service, the energy, or the food. It had so much potential, which made it all the more disappointing. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

The island time smoothie was great it was a refreshing smoothie to have. The Jet lag wrap was good but it was supposed to have spinach and there was none in it. The Cousin's BAT sandwich was good in the sense it had lots of bacon, plenty of greens and avocado and the ranch it came with was really good. Only bad thing was that the sandwich completely fell apart while I was eating it because of the bread. It was super crumbly when I got it I could already see the bread breaking apart but still ate it. Don't get it with their homemade wheat bread toasted maybe it won't fall apart with a different bread. read more

So I've been traveling and I'm tired, and I need something to pick me up. This lovely little place is perfect! I had a Cool Breeze smoothie and oatmeal with fruit and macadamia nuts. Maybe that doesn't sound so exciting, but it was absolutely delicious and just what I needed to get going. My family had avocado toast, the fruit croissant, smoothies and teas, and everything was fresh and vibrant. The service was very friendly. Nice place for families I'd say because of the games that are available like a large connect 4, jenga, etc. So many drink choices for coffee and super super sweet if that's your thing. Iced, hot or frappe for really any drink. Decent food items. So good choices I got I wouldn't get again but I'm glad I tried the breakfast burrito. If you like a lot of mushrooms and eggs get it. The Hawaiian chicken salad sandwich was alright and crispy. Depends on the day for ambiance as it can get pretty busy. read more

We found Hungry Honu tucked back off the main strip in Kona and it was such a great breakfast find. My husband and I shared the Cousin's BAT on focaccia and it was seriously so good. The focaccia was delicious and their housemade ranch was absolutely killer. I also got the Colada smoothie, which was super refreshing and perfect for the morning. Definitely a spot worth checking out if you're in Kona and want a tasty breakfast a little away from the main crowds. read more

Whenever I come back to Kona, the only place I am having bfst is this family owned cafe. Every dish we ordered, we ordered like 8 dishes, were all prepared with so much care and effort to get them exactly right. Right from the perfectly toasted focassia bread to the custom croissant sandwich and the bfst burrito the place excels in taste, wonderfully warm service and also validates your parking (which believe me is a big plus on this stretch) with a cute little Jesus watching over your friends. Went with my wife and another friend. Had a little difficulty finding the place from the road but eventually saw their sign. Parking is behind the restaurant and up the hill about 200ft and use the lot on the right side. They will validate your parking once inside the restaurant. The first thing I noticed when I walked in the entrance was how the place was very spacious and very clean. I ordered the breakfast pizza which was about 12 inches in size, enough for about 3 people. It was very good with sausage, bits of ham, mushroom, cheese, etc. Crust was also very good. The others in our party ordered the Power Up Wrap and JetLag wrap. They liked both of those items also and they were also plentiful in size. Staff was friendly and service was fast & efficient. I would definitely come here again to grab a bite to eat. read more

We needed something quick and light to eat after walking around Kona for a while and came across the Hungry Honu and it was perfect for what we were looking for. While the menu was not super extensive, the food was very fresh and delicious. We tried the green goodness turkey wrap and the Hawaiian chicken salad as a bagel sandwich, and both were really good. We were able to order quickly and our food came out in reasonable time. The food was especially refreshing after having eaten quite heavy "vacation meals" most of the week, so having something light and fresh really hit the spot. The restaurant itself is tucked back off the main road but has a huge indoor seating area as well as a few tables outside. Definitely a solid spot for a fresh bite in Kona! read more

A hidden gem of Kona. Slightly off the main Ali'i drive in the Kona Plaza Condominium shops, this place is amazing! Craft coffee drinks and food that is both delicious and well priced. I got a Lucky Charm cold brew (cold brew with mint Irish cream cold foam topped with lucky charm marshmallows) and a breakfast pizza. The sauce on the pizza is sausage gravy and it was absolutely delicious. The pizza could easily feed 2-4 people. My wife got a smoothie and a jet lag wrap. The wrap was huge compared to most other breakfast spots we have eaten at in Kona, so your money definitely goes a lot further here. Lastly the service was friendly and fast, and the casual atmosphere was nice and kid friendly. We played cards while waiting for our food. We are staying above this spot and will definitely be back to try more goodies! Also, a cool touch is instead of order numbers, they have order animals where you can learn about Hawaii's wildlife while you wait! read more

Walk into the Kona Plaza arcade and turn right then head toward Sarona Road and go left into the restaurant. I had the combo bowl of clam chowder and a half BAT (bacon arugula and tomato) sandwich . Generous servings, lots of bacon! Thursday special was 20% off coffee drinks. Great service, very clean. A cute little place in Kona. Not conveniently located lol. The yelp address on Apple Maps took me to some apartment structure and just kinda left me hanging. I ended up driving down a one way alley to find it. I didn't know where to park except in this huge parking lot that for 1 hour of parking was $13! I took my chances tho and didn't pre pay the parking. I'm assuming this place isn't too happening because there were 3 other customers. I'm not sure if the server was joking with one of the customers but at the register I heard cussing between them and it sounded kinda heated. Fairly new. If you want a quick or light bite, this is the place. Lots of tables (inside and out). Friendly staff and great service. I had the turkey melt. The ciabatta was fresh, turkey was soft and tender. It literally melted in my mouth. Very delicious! My husband had the roast beef melt? I can't remember, but he enjoyed it as well.
