One heads-up: you can't bring your own drinks, not even water, since they want you to buy theirs. That would be fair if they offered a full selection, but they don't carry sparkling water, which we're big fans of. They serve pizza on weekends, and I have to give a shout-out here: the pizza was great! Crispy crust, good cheese, and a nice hint of garlic. Now for what could be better. At a winery, you'd expect some good wines. Sadly, not here. The white selection was limited to Pinot Grigio. It was a bit watery but pretty good, and unfortunately they ran out of it. This year's Rosé has the sweetness of unfermented grape juice. It's so heavy you can barely drink it without diluting it with water. The red, Cask 140, is the most expensive on the list. I don't think I've ever tasted such a dense red. If you're hoping for nuanced flavors, you won't find them here. Everything is overpowered by prune, and it's very tannic. So of the three wines we tried, two I'd never order again, and the one decent option ran out. Honestly, this place feels more like Fortino Pizzeria than Fortino Winery.

I will say, I am usually a sweet wine person and we were told there were no sweet wines at this facility. Nonetheless, we did a wine flight just to try! The wines were very smooth, none were really my taste though. Again, preferring sweet wine this was a bit to adjust to. However, my family who got red wines and actually like red wines loved it! The star of the show for me was actually a peach cider they have! I usually don't like ciders either, but this one was so delicious and refreshing! I wish I had just got a couple of those. When we mentioned it was our first time visiting and that we were excited to be there, there was no warmth, no enthusiasm, and no effort to tell us about the wines or the property. Even the pours seemed careless. I know this is Gilroy and not Napa, but I still expected a welcoming experience and better wine service. Unfortunately, both the service and the wine itself were disappointing. The best part of this place was definitely the beautiful grounds, which would make a gorgeous wedding setting. They had a good amount of seating in each area, and had a lot of shade outside, which is absolutely necessary in Gilroy. The patio and grass area was very pretty, filled with lots of plants and even a sculpture. The property is also next to a plant nursery, so that added to the beauty even beyond their property line. We were helped by Melissa, and she was great! They had two tasting flights of 4 wines to choose from on our visit, one of which included a white and reds, while the other was all reds. They did also have some extra bottles open, so they were able to make an all white wine flight for one in our party. The pours were a good size, enough to really get a feel for the wine and share a taste with others. Two of us ended up taking home the same bottle of pinot noir.

The wines were quite drinkable but not really memorable. Syrah and Cara Mia, a Bordeaux blend, were more enjoyable. Chardonnay was steel barreled and therefore not oaky what-so-ever. I think that's a cost consideration, instead of a wine-making decision. I would probably not trek an hour to visit this place again. I bet locals enjoy this place essentially as a bring-your-own-foods outdoor bar.

It's a small vineyard with such an intimate and relaxing setting. The owners, Drew and Tiffany, are friendly, chill, and easygoing. Even though we've met them for the first time through a mutual friend, my husband and I felt comfortable talking to them as if we've known them for some time. They're very personable and well versed with their wines, and I love the stories behind some of the names for their wines. You'll also be greeted by their sweet and gentle black lab, Bear, who walks around saying hi to the guests. My husband and I both did the Estate Reds tasting as we love reds, especially Cabernets. I'm not a wine connoisseur at all, but I do like to enjoy a glass of wine here and there. The reds were delish, though I enjoyed The House (light) and Vino Nona (deep and bold) best. However, given another couple of years, I think Vino Nona would have an exceptional taste. And oh, you must try the Frozé (Frozen Rosé) or that I hope you get the chance as I heard they do run out of it fast. Such a yummy adult icee that is so refreshing with a good taste of the Rosé wine.
