We came to to this family owned restaurant as it was the 1st stop of our food tour. The big draw is that the bottle their own olive oil - it's a small production of around 500 bottles of and also the owners have an arrangement for sardines to be canned in their own olive oil. The oil is made from 3 varieties of olives and so the taste profile notes are butter, bitter and I cant recall the last one.
We were given a drink, a local beer and three tastings here, one of them of course bring the Olive oil + bread. So I must confess, I personally didn't like the olive oil that much. I've tasted much better olive oil in Italy, in the Tuscan region! The bitterness overwhelmed my palate with this olive oil. Also, I wish we'd been given the oil a bit more generously - it wasn't that much for our table!
Our 2nd tasting was Sardines on toast, and I liked this heaps more. The addition of a pickled piece of capsicum was genius. Added a sour element and complimented the fishiness of the Sardines perfectly.
The 3rd tasting was the cod fritters and OMG- these ones blew away all the others I'd had previously, they were so good! The crust was crisp, the ratio of cod fish to potatoes was perfect, they weren't oily! I could have devoured a whole plateful and so absolutely recommend getting this dish! This dish is also the reason I've bumped the restaurant up to 5 stars.
I'd totally come back here again for a main meal! Excellent start to the Food Tour!
