Manhattan Saddlery - Horse Equipment Shops Near Me - New York, New York

This is a truly beautiful old space with an interesting and somewhat random array of high-quality equestrian products in stock: a lot of show coats, a couple of brands of helmets, children's clothing, some tack items- girths, stirrups, bridles- and a couple of saddles. It's worth noting that they also carry a few harder-to-find items, like wool canary vests for fox hunting and some polo gear. I get the impression that a lot of items can also be ordered. However, as a previous reviewer mentioned, the service seems to be sorely lacking these days. I'm shopping for a jumping saddle currently and asked about one that was on display. The woman at the counter responded with the size, but did not move an inch from where she was standing, did not offer any further information, did not ask any questions about what I was looking for, did not offer to let me sit in the saddle, show me anything else, etc. She seemed totally uninterested in potentially selling me a $2,500 item and made me feel like I was imposing. This makes me sad, because I know that this store is sort of a piece of NYC history, having been in business for over 100 years. I may stop by and try my luck on another day in the hopes that a different person is working, because I really want to like this place. In the meantime, as an alternative, I'd recommend driving 45 minutes to North Shore Saddlery in East Norwich. It's a bit less fancy, but has a lot more stock and offers absolutely top-notch, friendly service. read more

DO NOT ORDER HORSEBACK RIDING BOOTS FROM HERE!! I placed a custom order back in late June, instead of taking my measurement the staff looked at me and went like: okay I know your measures and proceed to put into the system. My bad for not letting her actually measure me but I trusted the staff. It took them 2 months to make it in Europe because apparently, they dont work in the summer. 2 months later they called me said my boots got here, so I went to the store and the boots didn't fit me. I was very disapointed since I already waited for so long. So the staff there took my measurements again and resubmit the order and said it should be back in another month. So I was like okay sh*t happens, I'll just wait. A month later they called me again said my boots were here, so I went in and OMFG the boots still didnt fit me and I check the size, it was the same size as before. I was like okay this is completely unacceptable you need to give me a discount for this. So the girl took my measurement AGAIN and said she will ask her manager and get back to me. Then of course nobody got back to me. So today I called again, they said they are not able to offer me a discount, then I asked do you have my latest measures on file and how long does it take to re-order it, and they said they don't have my measurements and I need to come in to re-measure again!!!!! For your record, I placed my first order in late June and today is 11/7. I missed so many horseback riding classes and I just don't know how is this acceptable. so if you need to order customized boots, do yourself a favor and order somewhere else so you don't end up like me. read more

Great selection of products of top brands, but am very unimpressed with the customer service - hit and miss or barely there at best. The sales people don't seem to care at all to show / explain (aka to sell) to you their products, and they are pretty much just there to get inventory from the back for you to try. More recently, I bought a helmet less than a year ago as a greenie (and I told the sales person) - at no time did the sales person ask me how the fit was, or explain anything about the differences between brands, or how to tell if it's the right fit. Sure enough, after less than a year of wearing it, the helmet tips to cover my eyes when I started to jump. After some researching, I found out that the brand that I bought is well known to fit more oval heads, whereas my head is definitely round. The sales person should have known this and explained to me before buying. I have had way better customer service experiences with online tack shops. I've also found that the prices here are often significantly marked up, and the same items can be found online for much better prices. It's a shame - I've wanted to love this store and have given it many chances, but it's ruined by the awful customer service. read more

This old school riding apparel store sells only English riding equipment, such as riding boots, bridles, grooming supplies, and saddles. I wish this store should sell Western clothes, such as shirts, and Stetson hats. read more

Manhattan Saddlery is the perfect mix of charm and wonderful customer service. The associates go out of their way to make sure you get exactly what you want in a timely manner, especially when thy are out of a specific size or color. Their staff is knowledgable and can often pick out sizes and styles,s of pants, tops, coats, and boots for you without spending too much time measuring and pulling things off of the rack. They are up-to-date on current styles in all disciplines, and are overall some of the best equine salesgirls I have ever shopped with. Thank you! read more

I've been coming to Manhattan Saddlery for years, before it was Manhattan Saddlery or Copperfields. I still like to stop by for random items because it is more convenient for me to shop during the week when I'm in Manhattan than driving 45 minutes from my Westchester house. Manhattan saddlery is conveniently located, I can easily get there by subway or bus, I've also driven there before and parked on the street. There is a parking garage literally right next door, but I've never used it and NYC garage rates are quite ridiculous most of the time. Yes, there are some expensive items in the store, but that is simply because these items are good brand names and good quality. Their basic items are perfectly reasonable. Some of my horse's best and favorite items have come from this store. The only downside I can think of is that they are no longer stocking some of the basic items that I use/need like engraving/embroidering/personalization options and Himalayan salt licks, but they still have plenty of other things I need. I recently had a very good experience at Manhattan Saddlery. I have been looking and am still looking for a good fitting and well made saddle for my horse. I was tired of driving hours back and forth from another tack shop in upstate New York, so I thought I would stop in and see if Manhattan Saddlery had any options. Even though I wasn't able to find the saddle for me, I had amazingly good service. From just the first time I showed interest and explained my problem, all the way through the fitting, I was very pleased with my time there. And they were not pushy or rude even when it turned out that the saddle was not going to work out. I will definitely be going back any time I need to pick up some items for my horse. read more

I no longer ride but I will always be partial to equestrian gear for its functionality and design. This store has some great things - stylish all weather boots, coats, even polar fleece jodhpurs. A friend of mine bought some super stylish stretch riding tights to wear for working out at the gym - the sleek black fabric wicks better than lululemon and the cut is higher on the waist than tends to be the current trend in athletic wear. On numerous occasions I had great, friendly, professional service from the salesperson Rahel. She was helpful, knowledgable about the products in store and also made good suggestions. Her manner was friendly, her tone and pitch PERFECT (never overbearing, quietly attentive, a lovely helpful presence). When I returned another time the manager Mike Santiago was there. He was not helpful, he did not know the boots I wanted were available in a certain color and actually argued with me that they did not exist until I asked him to check the manufacturers website. The boots are $500 and I could have bought these boots online directly from the website of the boot company but I wanted to support the store and small retailers in general instead of shopping online. Mike Santiago said he would place the order but in the following days proceeded to complicate the process and before the store had placed the order I decided to cancel. Because the sale process was made unpleasant/complicated by Mike the manager, I cancelled a $500 boot order. I had also planned to buy more fleece lined jodphurs. In a retail environment where we can all buy almost everything we want online, it's a good sales person like Rahel that will keep customers going in to a physical store and keep small businesses alive. In summary, it is actually a great store, the owner seemed quite nice on the days when I saw him in the background, Rahel is fantastic, so if you do decide to shop here just avoid dealing with the manager. This was my first time experiencing Manhattan Saddlery. I didn't even know the store existed until I was trying to find a Christmas gift for my niece. The store itself is pretty impressive. I guess for avid riders it's a great place to go and shop. When I got there, you couldn't just walk in off the street, you had to ring a doorbell to get in. I noticed that there were no customers in the store when I arrived. There were a few sales people on the floor, including the woman at the register. As soon as I got buzzed in, I looked directly at the first sales girl that I came across hoping she would be able to help me, however, she glanced my way, didn't greet me at all and walked in my opposite direction. Then I walked towards the back of the store, saw another sales person who seemed to be preoccupied while standing around. She also didn't bother to greet me or even look in my direction until i interrupted her and asked her if she could help me. She finally took notice of me and blandly said she couldn't and told me to ask the girl at the register to help me. I then approached the girl at the register who also seemed preoccupied with what she was doing and barely acknowledged me, as well. I asked her about an item and she seemed less than pleased to answer my questions, throwing out a few words to me and then continued about her business. She seemed to be the nicest person in the store. She wasn't rude but she also wasn't attentive at all. I read the other yelp reviews expecting other people to comment about the lack of customer service in this store but did not see anyone complaining. I work in sales and customer service and every customer should always be a priority for any small business. I left happy with the item I purchased and I know my niece is going to love it, however, the next time I need to make a purchase it won't be inside this store. read more

I went into the shops last night and was so excited that I had found it. For some reason I'd never noticed it before while walking down 24th St. Needless to say I was sorely disappointed by the "shopping while black" experience that I had. I went straight to the helmets and told the woman, who was less than enthusiastic to help me, that i was looking for a new helmet because mine was so old. She then asked me...if I ride? Now why would I be looking for a new helmet if I didn't ride? Especially after I stated that I needed a NEW one. Why? Because I'm not blonde and white. That's why. FYI there are brown/black people that ride and even OWN horses. Screw this place. I'll just go back to the shop that has serviced me in CT for over 20 years. read more

I don't agree with negative reviews I've read elsewhere, had a great experience visiting the store yesterday for the first time. I used to go horseback riding regularly from age 7 though high school, but now I'm looking to get back in the saddle after a 14 year long break. Mike Santiago (the store manager) was very helpful in selecting the basic items I needed to get started (breeches, helmet, shoes, and gloves), and never tried to talk me into purchasing the more expensive products (I made it clear that I didn't want to spend a lot). Of course you can get similar products at a cheaper price online, but I value the opportunity to try everything on. I would recommend this store! read more

I have been an equestrian for over 18 years. Living in the city and having this passion has been a a challenge at least. Manhattan Saddlery has been the spot to go since I can remember. I have gotten my first Tall boots, crops here. I will have to say it is on the pricey side but I guess that comes with the territory of the passion. Everyone I've encountered there is friendly and knowledgeable, and I enjoy browsing some high-end brands I don't see at my hometown tack shop. I may not spend a lot -- sometimes it's a pair of boot socks, sometimes a new halter -- but it's always time well spent. read more

Being the only tack shop in Manhattan, this place is convenient if you need to pick up a couple basic items, however the staff clearly knows very little about horses and their prices are outrageous. They also have a very limited selection of items and don't have a clue as to what real horse people like, need, and use on a daily basis. One positive is that they have a sale section downstairs where you can get some discounted attire. I say shop elsewhere or online unless you are desperate and need something immediately and you can't get out to Long Island, Jersey or Westchester to go to a real tack shop. read more
