I had a great experience recently with MPW! I just moved into a building with a living room that I sought to flex into 2 bedrooms. I put in a request on a Tuesday for a Thursday build and they were able to make it happen!! I was immediately impressed by the quick turnaround and prompt email communication. Margaret informed me that the contractors would arrive between 8:00-9:00am to get it done before 3:00pm. My previous experiences with some contractors led me to believe they would arrive a bit later than anticipated... but lo and behold, at 8:00am sharp they arrived! Arby walked me through my options and we plotted out both rooms and dimensions with his handy dandy tape measure. He answered all my questions, made some great suggestions, and maintained that he would be happy to do whatever I wanted. He and his building partner worked efficiently and communicated with me via text to let me know how much time they needed. We got sliding doors + t-wall construction and couldn't be happier with the result. Though it was a bit more costly than my roommate and I anticipated, the positive experience and the high-quality of the walls (plus the cost of removing the walls is all included as long as you give them 1 month's notice) made me feel happy and at ease. If I ever need temporary walls again, I'll be coming to MPW! My one tip: double check with the building and management regarding their flex walls rules! First, I just want to say that working with Manhattan Pressurized Walls ("MPW") has been one of the best and easiest experiences I've ever had working with contractors. They are extremely professional, efficient and they get the job done well. I've enjoyed working with them on both occasions that I needed a temporary wall built. For my first apartment in the city coming out of college, I used MPW to build a temporary wall in Midtown East. The sales team (Margaret) was extremely helpful in working with me to design and build a wall that suit the needs of both the apartment building and the space that two roomates and I were moving into. The result was a wall that you would never realize was temporary, which made the living situation very comfortable for the last two years. During the design process, MPW worked with us to solve a number of issues that we had with the building and the space. In particular, we were looking to flex the living room, but the air coniditioning unit was right smack in the middle of where we wanted the wall to be placed. We ended up building the wall so that it split the AC unit in half so as to provide AC service to both the flex bedroom and the remaining living room space (each space received three vents). At first, the apartment building pushed back on our floorplan due to concerns around being able to service the AC unit. In response, MPW worked with us to build a small access unit to the AC system in case the unit needed to be serviced (we actually ending up needing to service the unit during our time in the apartment, so the access unit came in handy and was super easy to use - just had to screw out a few nails). MPW also inspired us to make the best use of the flex space by suggesting we build a closet into some dead space that the flex wall would create (our kitchen wall jetted out into the living room, so the flex wall created a small corner in the flex bedroom that would have been awkward without a specific use). To make better use of the space, MPW built us a functional closet with dual racks and shelves for hanging and storing clothes. The closet came out great and was a great addition to the space. In spite of the challenges we had to deal with, MPW made the process as easy as possible and worked with us at every step of the way. Their workers are also very friendly and professional and cleaned up very well once they finished installing the wall (and also after they finished removing the wall upon my move-out of the first apartment). I am now using MPW on a wall for my next apartment and they continue to be as easy to work with as possible. Two years later and I am again speaking with Margaret to design the wall for the new apartment. As an investment banker whose hours are sometimes pretty demanding (making any personal tasks pretty difficult to tend to), I'd highly recommend MPW to design and build a temporary wall for your NYC apartment. This company is charging a $350 "emergency removal fee" after we scheduled to have our wall taken down three weeks in advance. Even though they had plenty of open appointments available, because it was not 30 days ahead, it was considered an "emergency." Customer service is nonexistent. Over a year ago when I scheduled set up, the women coordinating it was incredibly rude and not even remotely helpful. The are built well and look just like the real ones in my apartment unit so people can't tell the wall was added in after. We brought Simon and the MPW crew to our SoHo location to construct a new wall and install a new door into the main hallway. I shopped around a bit beforehand and once again MPW provided the most affordable and comprehensive quote. Simon handled the logistics with the building super and provided the necessary insurance. We caught up a few times before the project to ensure that all the logistics were set and to confirm the plan. MPW came with a crew of 8 men early in the morning ready with all supplies. I recognized a few of the guys from the previous project so I knew I'd be in good hands. They covered the hallways and all our equipment and got going right away. It was a large project between the large new wall installation, the two new metal doors, the painting of the new wall, and removal of a small wall, but the crew completed the project on time. To put the finishing touches, MPW mopped and restored the facility cleaner than it had been before they came. Needless to say, I would gladly work with Simon and his crew again. read more

The staff who came to remove the wall was great, but for removals they do not touch up the paint. Make sure you confirm this when you schedule for removal, as I think this should be part of the service. This company is expensive and the only one that actually charges a $225 fee for keeping the wall up yearly. Margaret seems to the the person that schedules the service and she is unpleasant. When coordinating the removal, she yelled at me over the phone because she did not want to send the COI papers days in advance because I needed this to renew my lease. Then when she agreed, she basically said fine and hung up on me. The customer service from Margaret is poor and she is not afraid to use a hostile tone of voice. MPW was a little more expensive than some of the other companies I spoke with, but we selected them to create a nursery in our dining area since they seemed to be a large, reputable company. Since we own our apartment, we thought it was worth paying a little more to use an established company. Margaret was helpful enough during the planning / scheduling phase so we scheduled the installation. The installers arrived and were NOT friendly. They did not even introduce themselves as they walked into my home. I stopped and introduced myself, trying to offer coffee to break the ice. This did not work and the men barely spoke throughout the entire day, even when I asked questions. We just had brand new hardwood floors installed a couple years back. Their floor protection consisted of a few sheets of plastic. This worried me, but I asked them to be careful and crossed my fingers. The experience as a whole just continued to go downhill from there. It was not a pleasant day, and the results left much to be desired: 1.) No sound insulation. The contract states that "free sound insulation" was included in price of wall. NO insulation was installed. Was simply metal studs with sheet rock boards on each side of wall. 2.) We paid $95 extra to have custom moldings to match what we have in the apartment. They brought the wrong size. IN FAIRNESS, I HAD MISQUOTED SIZE BUT THEY DIDN'T EVEN BRING THE MISQUOTED SIZE. 3.) Terrible painting & no paint supplies. Their contract states that standard painting would be included "using a Benjamin Moore soft white, similar to what is used in the apartment, in a flat finish, unless otherwise agreed upon" - to which we agreed upon "custom painting of both sides of new wall" for an extra fee of $95 / side. They did not even have foam roller covers or paint trays, WE had to go out and purchase. Since painting is included usually, shouldn't they have had these supplies? I had asked AHEAD OF TIME if there was anything I should prepare prior to installation and was told there was nothing. Had there not been 2 of us present in apartment, we would not have been able to go out and buy these supplies. Considering the extra fee already included, this was shocking. 4.) Rude installers. They did not want to answer questions about the process and had absolutely no customer service skills. - At a certain point, they left the apartment without saying a word and took the liberty of unlocking my front door as they left. - Even though we'd expressed concern for the condition of the floor, they continued to place paint cans, a wet mop, and other tools directly on the hardwood. - One installer repeatedly tossed his heavy electric drill onto the floor as he was working -- there are now dents that were not there prior to installation. - There was not adequate floor protection - flimsy sheets of plastic with holes from standing and working on top of. Also, big gaps in these sheets did not seem to trouble them. - Basically, I was ignored when I expressed any kind of concern or requested information. 5.) Lack of supplies. In addition to our needing to provide paint supplies, they needed to borrow a bucket, they took a hand towel we provided and used it as a rag (with permission but I would have preferred they brought their own), and did not seem to have adequate floor protection. Cleanliness was lacking in general because of lack of floor protection and supplies. 6.) Damage and overall shoddiness of work. - We have dents on our floor - Clumpy paint and unfinished edges - Measurements for where we asked door to begin are off - Millwork is of terrible workmanship - The sliding door is of particularly poor quality. It literally has screws as stoppers on the track, nail indents not filled in, edges of wood not sanded, and a bulky cover for track. Additionally, they did not communicate a word regarding screwing this system into the existing wall or verify that their actions were OK. - I cringe to think of what the floor and ceilings will look like after the wall is removed in a couple years. Overall, it was a pretty awful experience and you are better off avoiding at all costs! read more

I must admit that it wasn't me, but my roommate who actually found Manhattan Pressurized Walls and decided to use them, but I was the one at the apartment to oversee the wall installation and witness firsthand from start from finish how everything went down. Being new to New York, I wasn't too familiar with pressurized walls, but was aware that many apartments had them, and for the most part, it was pretty obvious which wall was the fake one. So I didn't really have high hopes for what our apartment would look like after we partitioned off part of the living room to convert into a bedroom. When they first came into the apartment with their equipment and the pieces of the wall, I was totally skeptical about the quality. The french door didn't look that new, there were scuff marks on the door, and the pieces just looked very bleh. But no worries...they made everything look fantastic by the time they were done! Once they installed the door, they painted everything, installed new hardware, washed the windows, and basically put on the finishing touches. I watched the whole process go down, but had to leave right before they were about to start painting in order to go to the bank to get a cashier's check (they only take cash and cashier's checks...no personal checks). When I got back, I was AMAZED at the transformation. They had even matched the paint with the paint on our walls so that there was a seamless transition from real to pressurized wall. You seriously couldn't tell which wall was the pressurized wall. Everything from the door trim to the floor base boards matched the ones the apartment came with. The whole process took a little over 4 hours. From the minute the two guys got in the door, they went right to work and were super efficient. And during that time, the apartment turned into a total construction zone...dust particles and stuff everywhere. But at the end, they even had a mop to clean up everything, and left no evidence that they were even in the room, except for the new bedroom thanks to the new wall. read more

First of all, let me just say that I talked to about 7 other wall companies and, although some quoted less, I felt the most comfortable going with MPW. They were professional and timely and really knew what they were doing! I felt like other companies were pushy, rude, and really sketchy. One company actually asked me who else I was talking to and sent me an email with bad reviews about them! In the end, it's a business and you want to go with the company with the best manners and punctuality! I highly recommend MPW for all your wall needs. And the other reviews are right, they do clean up well! (The only reason they don't get 5 stars is that one of the workers put my bookcase on my bed and it bent two of the metal things that were holding up my bed, but I'm sure it was an honest mistake so I'm not mad about it.) read more

They were very quick in their email responses, and sent someone out to the apartment to check out exactly what I needed (unlike other wall companies that just wanted me to send pictures of the area I was looking to wall off). The two guys that built the wall were punctual, and did a great job putting up the wall. They also cleaned the area so that when they left, the 'construction site' was very neat. After searching for apartments for a while, we settled on one near our old place, that was awkwardly shaped, but fit my family and I. My wife did tons of research and decided to book MPW. We came to MPW for a quote on putting up a wall in our 10ft high bedroom after another company I'd previously worked with couldn't do one that high! Margaret was fast and clear in her communications with me, helping me get all of the proper paperwork needed to allow for the work in our Co-op building. 4 years ago I used MPW to convert the "alcove" in my studio apartment into a separate bedroom. I'm so glad I did. MPW did a great job and you really could not tell that the apartment used to be a studio. I just moved out of my old apartment and MPW came by to remove the wall this week. The wall was taken down quickly, the workers spackled the ceiling and did not leave until the floors were swept and everything looked perfect. After having a very negative experience with Donny from All Week Walls (who was super rude and kept emailing me even after I told him I would not work with them) I got in touch with MPW. They were very prompt and polite (I interacted with Simon and Margaret) and arranged for my wall to be removed within the dates I told them. My wall had originally been installed by All Week (meaning they'd remove it for free), but given the poor customer service (which seems to be the rule, based on other reviews I read) I decided to pay another company to do it. MPW's price was fair and they provided all the insurance details to my building's management. The two MPW guys that were sent to my apartment were there 9am sharp and by 9:40 had not only finished removing the wall, but had also cleaned everything up. They were so quick that they made it look very easy. I am extremely happy with their service and would definitely recommend them. read more

I joined Yelp to add this glowing review to MPW. I had a fantastic experience working with them. We had a simple wall with a door put up in March 2008 for about $1000 for a two year lease of the wall. There was an additional $150 dollar fee for the third year of the wall that we paid because we ended up staying in the apartment longer than we thought. We also paid an extra $100 to install soundproofing. I was amazed at how much noise the wall kept out with the soundproofing and recommend it. I let the wall folks in and went to work and when i returned we had a fantastic looking wall that many visitors to our apartment over the 2.5 years we lived there could not tell was not originally part of the apartment. I had the wall removed yesterday in preparation to move out. If you make the wall removal appointment at least 3 weeks ahead of time, there is no charge to remove the wall. I let the wall folks in to the apartment at 9 and by 12 they were done and on to the next. The apartment looks great - you can hardly tell a wall was there at all. It is also possible to turn over the lease of the wall to the tenant moving in, but it requires a $500 'transfer of lease' fee from MPW. All in all I was extremely pleased with the pricing, quality of the product and efficiency of the process and the pleasantness of the people I worked with. Highly recommend. read more

Margaret is the worst. She is incredibly rude and answers no questions just pushing you to sign the contract and nothing else. These people just care about getting your money as fast as they can and nothing else. The work was fine for the most part...the plywood divider that doesn't go to the ceiling with the sliding door is garbage and is basically a plywood box standing up with a crummy closet door. It wobbles if you put your weight on it and if you shake it at all it moves like it's going to fall over. I don't feel safe with this thing in here. The full pressurized walls are probably better though. The only reason they get two stars is because the guys that installed the wall worked fast and were nice guys. The paint job is a joke though...it looks half painted and needs 1-2 more coats. I can still see plywood through the paint. Pretty much this was a ripoff. It's only partially their fault though...a lot of it is the NYC laws that every single person/building seems to interpret differently. Now the city is cracking down on creating flex shares. If people could put pressurized walls and regular doors, I probably wouldn't be so upset about the price and terrible customer service. read more

STAY AWAY this company is the absolute worst. They quoted me 100$ higher than anyone else but claimed it would "be more than worth it" because of the quality of their work. They installed a pocket door and told me the wall had to be 10 inches thick, which I later found out is an ABSOLUTE LIE because I visited a friends house who had used one of their competitors and had a reg sized wall with a pocket door. They left my apartment a mess , there was paint on the floor and so on . Simply put, this company gets it done. I lived at 257 Gold for 4 years and always went with these guys for my two walls in two different apartments. Their price is comparable to other companies in NYC from what I remember. If its more expensive (which wouldnt be by much) it's because they make a solid product. I've had so many people come over and think I live in a true 3 bedroom because the wall looks that legit. The guys that put up and take down the walls (which is no additional cost by the way) are super quick and efficient. All the details you need to get a wall are on their website- make sure you follow their suggestions to ensure things go smoothly. My biggest recommendation is to schedule things with them early.
