Let's just put it this way: I eat there at least once a month, and at one point, I was eating there once a week until my finances weren't too keen. Mandarin Wilbraham is a very unassuming, but large and noticable yellow-awning'd building on Rte. 20, between Wilbraham Center and the YMCA. Seemingly average Chinese fare, but they do it really well, their food is delicious, and you get a large amount for the fair amount of money they ask (about $7-10 for an entree). I get the General Gao's tofu here, which isn't on the menu, but is in their itinerary; also, the Ginger Tofu, which comes with lots of green beans. Their miso is so-so, but their tempura is excellent, which brings me to the sushi bar. Although the owners are, I believe, Chinese, their Japanese fare is really good. They have a chef prepare a pretty wide selection of sushi, sashimi and maki. The sushi is a bit pricey, but isn't that usually the way? Currently hugging my toilet bowl thanks to our lunchtime delivery of some old General Tso's chicken that was refried to appear fresh, and some beef teriyaki that was hard, stringy, and gloppy. We ended up throwing our entire order away. My husband (who has also been sick all afternoon) called to complain and was told by the manager that they "only serve fresh food". We didn't even ask for a refund, we only wanted to inform the manager that the food we were served was obviously old and recooked, and all she could say was "what would you like me to do?" I went here on New Years Day back in 2008. (It was the only thing open, and a friend and I had a sushi craving.) We ordered over $30 worth of sushi, and while it was alright, it was definitely not the best sushi I had ever had. It WAS, however, priced fairly cheap. I was VERY ill a few days later, as was my friend. I found out later that we had gotten parasites from the salmon sushi. I would not recommend Mandarin at all! We went to this place on a Saturday night. We were seated right away, our server was the one who did not smile and acted like she did not want to be there. She brought our drinks and took our order, we started with Hot and Sour soup it was average, had Ribs for a appetizer, we asked for hot mustard, she did not bring any to us. Our diners came and we found it did not come with any rice of any kind so we had 2 dished with meat and vegetables , to late to order any rice, our meals would have been cold by then. She should have said do you want any rice when she took our order. Still dot no hot mustard after we asked again. The table behind us had a better waitress she brought them water besides their drinks, she was very attentive to her customers. The best part was when the bill came, my date and I agreed she Sucked as a waitress so when he put the money in the wallet and told her it was all set, she walked away then came back and tried to say we didn't give her enough money, we only gave her a few dollars extra, I guess she thought we made a mistake, we didn't , she didn't deserve more than that. As far as food it was a typical Chinese place nothing to write home about. Won't go back there again. There are much better places around. I couldn't wait to join this site just to give a review on this place. Don't waste your time. read more

Very amazing good food. The staff is always very friendly and outgoing. Whenever I'm in town I make sure to visit. Definitely five stars.

Overall, pretty average. I got the triple szechuan special, which was a nice spicyish combo of beef, chicken, shrimp, and veggies. Everything was tasty and the portion was large enough to satisfy my appetite. My wife, however, got the general tso's dinner special, and wasn't happy at all. The "chicken" were really balls of flavored breading. After eating a few, she cut open the rest in an attempt to find any chicken. Only three of the pieces had meat, and even those were pretty sparse. For sides, the pork fried rice and egg roll were both dry and bland. Service was sufficient but nothing to write home about. There are enough other spots to try that we probably won't return on future trips to Wilbraham. read more

I order from here on a weekly basis. The food is not too shabby for an Asian restaurant. I really love their vegetable steamed dumplings and miso soup. The portions of all their dishes really fills you up and for a decent price point. I will be ordering from Mandarin in the future!! read more

This place deserves WAY more than the three stars it currently has. The food is delicious. We've tried all kinds of things on the menu and have never been disappointed. My husband is picky about "weird chicken" and the meat is always delicious and of excellent quality. Appetizers are delicious and they make great little seasonal cocktails. But, perhaps even better are the people. It's a family restaurant and everyone who works there is welcoming and kind. If you eat in-house, you'll quickly see that plenty of people are regulars here and that the owner treats them as if they're guests in their home. The bartenders are always very nice and the atmosphere is the perfect little local place--even if the decor is just that of a traditional Chinese place in the U.S. We actually drive all the way to Mandarin Wilbraham from Longmeadow whenever we get Chinese. We have plenty of options in between but really don't consider them. And although I usually just pick up food from any other Chinese place, we always take the opportunity to dine in here. We haven't been here in a while and I now know why! Food was not good at all. Chicken chow mein was all onion and bok choy. Very little chicken and no flavor at all. Hints -only hints - of onion and garlic. Even soy sauce couldn't help it. As far as the eggroll goes, very mushy on the inside with indistinguishable flavor. Couldn't eat that either. Place smelled of bad fish, which is probably why the sushi gave me mild food poisoning. I ALMOST followed my gut (no pun intended) and didn't order any meat just in case... Jokes on me I guess after trying to give them the benefit of the doubt off a friend's word. The scorpion bowl is also all rack alcohol, including the center shot... Every place I've ever been uses Bacardi at the very least for that. Oh, and the Sapporo I ordered tasted beyond skunky. Overall, I'd say skip this place. read more

Judged alone by their ineptitude / deceptive marketing, these guys are stupid, lazy, dishonest, or all of the above. Ludlow borders Wilbraham and so these guys sent me a "saturation" mailer touting order delivery from just $2.50. They used a special service from the US Postal Service called "Every Door Direct Mail", which allows you to select as few as all the people delivered by a single letter carrier -- usually in the range of 500-700 deliveries. This is a very narrow geographic selection. All the people in a mail carrier's route often live in less than half a mile of one another. This also means that it is very easy to exclude people from your offer that are beyond your desired delivery area. And the cost for modifying your offer so that nobody gets the "we deliver" notice is absurdly low. The direct mail piece was a 8.5" x 14 self-mailer (no envelope), two color, with the delivery offer being in black ink. That means it would have cost little more than $50 to do what's called a "plate change" and omit the delivery offer for addresses you wanted to exclude. I've been in the direct mail industry since 1985, and that's why this detail is accurate. I think that management should take every reasonable measure to make sure that potential customers are not mislead / inconvenienced. The company's response to being notified about this discrepancy? They just hung up the phone. read more

Placed my order at the counter and paid. Order came, I went home, opened to find not what I ordered. Ordered 5 items. Received 3 of the 5 correctly. There were 2 other items in the bag, but not what I ordered. Called to let them know the error. They wanted me to come back to pick up correct order. No chance of that, I was home for the night. Another disappointment. The food was not of the quality expected from the Mandarin. Flavors were off. Gravy was cold. Noodles were extremely dry and they had no flavor. Called the Manardin back and let them know that the food was just not right. Asked for a credit on one item and they tried to get me to go back and get replacement food. I could see if they were swamped with customers. Parking lot was basically empty with patrons at the bar. Sorry guys. I think you just lost a customer. read more

Ordered moo goo gai pan dinner...simple...3 pieces chicken bland sauce...huge pile of rice on plate...over marinated and over cooked old tiny chicken wings. boyfriend got 3 delight 3 small shrimp, tiny pieces of chicken, where's the beef? Should have been called green pepper special, mostly sauce and veggies......TERRIBLE MEAL!! Then for hell of it ordered chicken fingers since we didn't eat entree's. I have been a loyal and frequent customer of this restaurant for years and years. Often picking up takeout, eating in, and having food delivered. However, as they have gotten more and more busy, their service has taken a beating. Recently I ordered a PICK UP order at 5:25 pm on a Tuesday afternoon. Once the food arrived home, we found that the order was incorrect. Really incorrect. Not what the receipt said, and nothing that we could or would eat. We called, and they said that they would deliver the correct order in an hour (now 1 1/2 hour after ordering). We said alright. They called back to say that they couldn't GIVE us what we ordered, as it wasn't available. Would we like something else? Yes, we said, an order of chicken fried rice. There was a pause, and she said that she would give us a SMALL order as the "price equivalent". Really? You can't throw in an extra bit of rice, after inconveniencing someone to the tune of quite some time and money spent???? Nope, she said. Our order didn't arrive. An hour and 15 minutes had passed, so I called the restaurant. The woman answering the phone said that the delivery person had left 20 min earlier (we are 15 minutes away) and should be there shortly. Another 15 minutes passed, and I called back. Was the delivery person lost? She'd been there before. The woman who answered the phone, clearly annoyed, was very snippy with me and said "would you like me to call and find out her exact location." I said that wasn't necessary. TWO HOURS and 15 minutes later (from the original call to say the order was correct, NOT when the order was placed) and at 8:15pm (remember, the call was at 5:25pm, so almost THREE HOURS later), the food arrived. No apology. And yes, by the way, a SMALL order of chicken fried rice to make up for the sushi that was ordered and could not be delivered. SORRY. No matter how busy you are, you HAVE to provide better service than this. I have tried to call the owner several times, and can't reach anyone willing to offer a call back. read more

I've only been here once. Usually we go to Ginger Blossom but my aunt loves this place. I feel like this is the type of place where anyone can find something to eat because their menu is enormous! We ordered a bunch of dishes and everything was great. My only complaint was the service was terrible. The waitresses are definitely understaffed and just straight up don't care. But, whatever. This was my first time at Mandarin, and I found it to be just alright. The portions were a little smaller than most Chinese restaurants. The lo mein had a slightly-off taste to it. The chicken in garlic sauce was less chicken, and more green peppers. The service was great, though. Maybe it was an off night and perhaps next time I'll try other dishes. read more

In all honesty, this is more like 3.5 stars. *Hey Yelp how come we can't do 1/2 stars?* I can't quite give it a 4 but wouldn't say it deserves a 3 though. Here's how I came to this conclussion: I heard our long time favorite Chinese spot, Peacock, changed hands and hasn't been great. So tonight we thought we'd give Mandarin a solid try since it seems we need a new Chinese spot. Years ago we had their sushi and loved it. About a year ago friends ordered takeout from here and it hit the spot then too. So today we started with egg rolls which were a tad greasy, but came out super fresh and hot. General Tso dinner combo was plentiful and I liked how they put the fresh broccoli to separate the rice and meat. That way the broccoli wasn't drenched in sauce. My curry chicken was pretty standard and took care of my craving. Side note: Is it just me or they load these up with too many onions? Our server was super friendly and totally on top of getting what we needed at all times. So all in all we were satisfied for standard Chinese food and were happy with our meals and the affordable bill. So really I can't give it the 4 because I gave the old Peacock a 4 because it was the bomb, which I guess it's not anymore. And this is still a touch below the old Peacock. It'd be cool if MassLive did one of their food surveys for best Chinese. Apparently I'm going to be doing my own. It's gonna be awhile. read more

What a great place! My fiancé works near by and he spent 1 week trying different restaurants similar to this on his lunch breaks and said by far this was his favorite. He brought me tonight to try, and I have to say I was really happy. Then place was packed but we got seated right away. Service was great. Best Chinese food and service! 15 min drive from my house and don't care about the drive.

After spitting out 5 out of 10 pieces of our " Lunch Special" General Chicken because it tasted like it was fried with seafood, we were afraid to eat anymore; especially since my friend is allergic to shrimp. Everything else: Crab Rangoons, Rice, and Chicken Teryaki was good, Veggie Lo Mein was Excellent. Not being able to eat the main course and being extremely disappointed...we decided to return the remainder, which was most of the order---I only had 6 tiny pieces of chicken; spit out 2. The customer service is so poor...manager insistent we were wrong, that we ate half,and refunded about half of the cost. I have run into this ridiculous kind of customer treatment in other Asian restaurants, so we were not surprised. We won't be going back largely because of "these people" and their lousy attitudes and policies. read more

This place serves your pretty typical Chinese lunch stuff (didn't try the sushi) but I'm bumping it up to 4-stars because the quantity of food we got at lunch was pretty big considering the typical $6/$7 lunch prices. You also get a choice of appetizer AND soup which seemed unusual, the apps were a choice of egg roll, spring roll, chicken fingers, crab rangoon, etc. Nothing that would blow anyone's mind but it is a nice little extra you wouldn't get at many other typical Chinese places. The chicken in garlic sauce was pretty good and loaded with lots of crisp, fresh tasting vegetables. I'm not a big fan of shrimp with lobster sauce but my dining partner said it was the best he's had in ages. read more

We ate at Mandarin Wilbraham last night for Valentine's Day. It was spur of the moment, it's near the house and it's not too pricey. We had sushi, sashimi, and 2 Chinese entrees - Stir Fried Green Beans, and a noodle dish called Mei-Fun (I'm not sure that's on the regular menu...) All of the food was delicious. The sushi and sashimi were a little pricey, but like other commentators have said, "isn't that always the way?", the service was adequate, and we had a nice meal. Others around us were also enjoying themselves and there were even asian people eating there, speaking chinese, which is usually a pretty good indicator that the food is good. At the end of the day, this is a typical "mom & pop" chinese restauarant that serves all of the favorites plus sushi. I would recommend it for a pleasing lunch or dinner. read more
