Arbitrarily decides not to honor lunch special. Was in on weekday during stated hours and told they weren't offering it today. However, instead of $10 for same meal I could pay 15.50 plus the cost of soup. Even though I was ordering $50 of non lunch special items she wouldn't honor what was on their menu. We did a pick up order, so I can't speak to dining in, but the lady who worked the front upon pickup was kind and accommodating, so I'm sure service would be as well . Ever since the closure of Jade Village, Rockland has been hurting for a really good Chinese Restaurant. Fortune Garden was very good in years past, but today it is nowhere close to its former level of excellence. For the last few years I've been schlepping to Ocean Empire since it has been the best around. Not any more! After a year or so of horrendous ownership, Mandarin is now in the hands of a team who takes real pride in their establishment. They freshened up the room and returned it to a dine-in venue. The lady who runs the front is delightful and very accommodating, and the menu has very friendly prices. Bottom line, what really matters is the food. For those who remember how the food tasted when George was the owner, this is at least as good and possibly better. When you get your meal you can tell that the cook has extensive experience preparing these dishes; there is care put into the preparation and it is not (what I call) industrial-strength Chinese. The fact that they give generous portions is a bonus. It's great to have a Chinese venue back in town that offers a very pleasant dine-in experience along with terrific food. My wife and I are always looking for a decent sit down Chinese restaurant and we never have really found one in Rockland. Mandarin was always an OK restaurant, but nothing special. During COVID they went to take out only and we never went back. We happened to read that they now have dine-in. We called and find out that there are new owners since November 2023. What a difference! The place has been cleaned up and no grumpy waiters. The major difference was the food. The husband/wife team recommended the Mongolian Beef, I had Orange Beef and we shared the Pan Fried Dumplings. The beef was very tender, the Orange Beef lightly fried (not the usual heavy batter with a puddle of grease at the bottom of the plate) and the dumplings were hand made and delicious. Highly recommended and we are looking forward in trying more of their dishes. read more

We were there Christmas Eve. The staff were overwhelmed. No ambience to speak of which is fine by me. I was there for the food. Food wise portions were small, it was as good as an ok local takeout. Based on other reviews I read I was hoping for Chinatown style quality. Now if a Chinese restaurant in Rockland aspired to be as good as Queens or NYC Chinatown restaurants they would stumble upon a gold mine. My advice - stop dumbing down the food for what you think we want to eat. Cook like you remember your parents cooking for you. Rockland county needs a good Chinese restaurant. First of all, the new owners officially opened within the last week after a few weeks of a shakeout run. This means any reviews that are more than a month old are from different owners. This restaurant was a place for decent quality basic Chinese food until the longtime owner George retired a couple of years ago. Then it became hit and mostly miss, depending on who was in the kitchen that night. The new owners have cleaned up the place physically and are personally involved. Getting restaurant workers today is very difficult for all restaurants but I think the new owners can survive it and give New City what will be a good quality basic Chinese American meal. Here we go again. I have officially given up on finding traditional Chinese food in Rockland county. Tonight wasn't as bad as others we have tried here, but, never again. Thought I'd give the new management a try and ordered the basic variety as a test. Wonton soup: No pork, scallions, or green leafy veggies in broth just over cooked and falling apart wonton noodles some of which the meat fell out of. Also, broth was a dark brown. Not the traditional yellow chicken stock. Egg Roll: Terrible texture and have never tasted anything like it. BBQ Ribs: Besides half being 100% burnt/black they taste like American BBQ ribs done with a mop. No traditional Chinese rub i.e. star anise etc.. Very disappointing. Pork fried rice: This was the closest we came tonight to getting traditional Chinese takeout. It was edible. Everything else was tossed. These 5 star reviewers have to get out of the county more often and see what their missing. For now on it's back to Brooklyn. read more

this is the worst place to order food. my staff of 5 ordered food where the chicken wings were undercooked, red inside and some wings were green. the rice was hard like pebbles. the egg drop soup had drippy eggs and the soup itself was slimey. i reported this dumpster to the dept of health. so it can be investigate. restaurant totally sucks. aa read more

It takes me a lot to write a review. Cold sesame noodles. Got peanut paste that was stuck to the top of the container. Not one sesame seed to be found. No scallions.. noodles and peanut sauce not mixed in. Just laid on top. So thick I had to do it in a different bowl. Tasted horrible. Spicy Szechuan Beef. ZERO taste. ZERO spice. Looked and tasted like thin gravy on veggies. Egg drop soup. No salt. No flavor. I cannot believe this is Chinese food. My wife and I just returned from dinner at the Mandarin Chinese Restaurant. The new owner of about 3 months was extremely engaging and asked our name as we were leaving. The food was very good. I had General Tso's Shrimp and my wife had the Orange Beef. They have a special app consisting of a delicious pork dumpling. If you order two, the second one is half-price. They were delicious. Well I've been there twice in the last couple of weeks and there is improvement it's better than what I wrote a couple months ago I would order online, good website to order(its new). if you want your food an hour or an hour and a half after it was made use Grub Hub - NEVER USE GRUHUB I just wish they would understand also that perception is everything. And when you walk in Mandarin it looks like the inside of one of those yearly storage garages that you pack all your junk that you don't want. FYI when you order something you write in notes tell them to make it Hunan style or kung pao. I found a 1-1/2" cockroach fully cooked in my Shrimp with Broccoli. A dish that is light in color and for a Chef not to notice that a large, black insect had entered the mix displays their lack of attention given while preparing the food. I also saw the Food Service Training Program Certificate they present behind the cash register had been expired for over two years. I would not like to know what other health provisions are being violated by this restaurant. I was attracted by the "under new management" and "50% off" (on selected items) signs. So ordered two of those specials for take-out. First of all, what was charged was more like 25% off based on the take-out menu prices (something we didn't notice until we got home). Secondly, there were none of the "extras" we commonly associate with Chinese restaurant take-out (no soy sauce packets, fortune cookies, chop sticks, etc.). Just napkins. I guess you need to ask. Third, although we asked for the Szechuan dish to be made mild, it was so hot that it was totally inedible, even by one in our party who LOVES spicy hot foods. (Ghost peppers?). And the "mild" dish we ordered was filled with the same hot peppers - should have been classified as "hot" on the menu. For the dish where the chicken was breaded and fried, the pieces of chicken were so tiny that it was almost all fried bread coating chunks. In the end, one of the dishes would not be eaten by anyone and went into the garbage, though we are a frugal bunch. And the portions were very small. Seeing all the good reviews, I maybe should assume it was just a bad day for the restaurant. But our experience was so disappointing, I don't think we'll give it another chance. read more

This restaurant is a disgrace!! My husband returned from picking up our take out order and it was completely wrong. When we called the restaurant, they continually hung up the phone on him at least 5-6 times and called him an "idiot" and didn't know how to order. My husband than drove back and told them the order was incorrect. The owner than proceeded to scream and verbally abuse him to the point that the whole restaurant ran out. He then tried to have him go out to the parking lot to fight!! What is going on with this place?? It will never be the same, we miss you George. I am the world's worst eater of Chinese food. Seriously. I only eat like 2-3 things...pork fried rice, pork lo mein, egg rolls, pot-stickers.... That being said, this place was GREAT! The tea is soooo good! The pot-stickers were ok. The veggie ones that BDK ordered looked way better than my pork ones. However, my pork lo mein was amazing. Not too greasy. The pork actually looked like pork and was meaty and flavorful. BDK is off meat these days and ordered the General Tso's tofu and said it was very, very good. Inconsistent and not worth the headache. You literally can't order anything that isn't directly off the menu or you will get a random dish. I ordered Szechuan chicken and shrimp and asked to add broccoli. I've gotten the regular Szechuan chicken and shrimp plenty of time, it is hot and spicy and usually has a very small bit of cabbage/lettuce in it. I've been going here all my life, and yes, the quality of the restaurant has gone down immensely. The old owner retired and really kept his restaurant top notch back in the day. That being said, I still frequent this place (considering it is the only Chinese restaurant in New City). With Mandarin, play it safe. Order the basics: chicken and broccoli, fried rice, lo mein, etc. Not trying to bash other reviews, but honestly, why would you order duck at a small Chinese place in New City? Save entrees like that for well-known places in the city! There have been times where I've actually had to throw out the food because it was so inedible. They throw in SO much oil it's scary. Mandarin is a decent, basic Chinese restaurant. The prices are expensive for the bland food, but if you want take out Chinese food material at a sit down, you do not have much choice.
