Food is decent overall, but they're getting two stars based on what other reviewers have mentioned: finding ways to overcharge the customers! First off, they charged me for hot tea that I never ordered nor wanted. I ended up telling them to take it off the bill when I paid, but they reluctantly did it saying everyone gets tea. 2 They are imposing a 4% credit or debit card usage, which merchants normally charge 25-50 cents for per transaction. When did the cost of doing business to accept payments start being passed on to the customers at a profit for the restaurant?? 3 They automatically added a service charge and I'm dining alone! I used to work in the restaurant business and I can understand charging for a large group or party, but one person dining in with nothing posted to warn customers of the charge is ridiculous. Technically, service charges would not hold up legally in court if disputed by customers. 4 The menu prices are super high; I ordered dim sum and off the menu. A shrimp dumpling dish considered "small" at other dim sum places I've been to is considered "premium" here and cost $10. I don't recommending coming here based on the restaurant's ethics. Food and service has gone down and every time I eat dim sum there, I feel as if I just got robbed. Even if you take out they add a service (tip) charge that is probably 20%. They also add tea charges to each and everyone on the table if you drink tea or not! They will never give you an itemized bill and when you ask for one, they give you a credit card receipt. This place rivals some of the fantastic full-service restaurants in the best Chinatowns of North America complete with live fish pond and several tanks of fresh seafood upon entering. Set back in a suburban strip mall, it has been here for decades and continues to crank out authentic Cantonese style food consistently day in and day out. Nearby the airport, it is one of the first places I think about going to upon landing. They may be best known for their weekend Dim Sum which is outstanding and packs in the crowds. If you are not there at 10am opening, be prepared to wait and since there is not a large internal waiting area, you may be lining up outside. Lining up outside at a restaurant is almost always a good indicator but when it is winter in MN, do so at risk of freezing your appendages off. There is a parking lot and some very limited parking around the back too but it fills quickly. I actually feel bad for the other strip mall businesses on the weekend when the parking lot becomes an Asian invasion targeting this single business. The other businesses must be wondering WTF is going on in the Chinese restaurant to generate such interest? In addition to great Dim Sum, I most often go for dinner where the food is as good as any I've had in Hong Kong. There are some westernized offerings but largely, the place is frequented by blackheads looking for authenticity, another good indicator in my opinion! Some of my favorite dishes include pan fried noodles, beef with bitter melon, salt and pepper prawns and squid, and watercress with fermented wet bean curd sauce. I also love their pork hash with salted fish but it smells so funky that my family rarely lets me order it! They always bring out free soup to the Asian tables which is a great starter and seems to make use of left over perishables. I've had pork neck and watercress as well as pork and tomato soup which have been standouts. They also bring out free sweet soup at the end regardless if you are stuffed. Also a nice touch and also noted to only come out to the Asian tables. I kind of feel bad when we are dining elbow to elbow next to non-Asians and they see us getting soup at the start and end of our meal. They generally don't act like they think it looks good so I'm sure they aren't feeling too left out but it is socially interesting to watch the entire soup discrimination process in action. Food alright. Services was alright. The bad part is the tipping. My bill was $71 and it came out as $95.99. The cashier said tip is already included. This is a bill for two people. I don't mind giving tip. Even if the food is bad. But it was taken out by the cashier without your knowledge. That is a 35% tipping. Their highest suggested tip is 20% which was $18.99. Love coming to this local spot. Dim sum is available on weekends, make sure you come early as it is always packed. They have great variety in the dishes they serve. All the the dumpling are to die for and become filling after awhile. This is a great place to come with a lot of people as you can try a bit of every dish. Wow. If you desire authentic Chinese, this is your place. I've not experienced anything quite like it, except, perhaps Shuang Cheng, in Dinkytown. If I had to choose between the two, the tip goes to Mandarin Kitchen because it also provides parking. Unless you're familiar with the menu, ask the waiter to recommend dishes. They really know the menu. Know that the seafood and fish dishes are made with fresh ingredients from among the many live tanks at the front of the restaurant. We went for the seafood and fish. So, if you trust my judgment, try the following: Salt and Pepper Shrimp. Break off the head of the shrimp, suck out the succulent juices and discard. Then eat the rest of the shrimp, including the crunchy shell. Whole Walleye​. Served with the head, of course, and presented, out of respect, facing the oldest guest. The chef has "pre-cut" major sections of the fish, making it easy to pull large portions of the flesh away from the body, leaving the bones on the skeleton. We ordered ours with a very tasty meat sauce. A black bean sauce version is also available. We hear the Dim Sum is the best around and are making plans to return one weekend very soon. read more

Great atmosphere and the clientele was delightfully diverse and respectful of the family atmosphere. For perspective, I dined alone so I ate at the bar and never felt like I was truly separate from the tables of diners. Any palate will be pleased with the level of spice that is standard with each dish. If you need heat, ask for chili oil on the side and be prepared to be blown away with the enhancement. Anyways, I want to get authentic Chinese food for the lunar new year so I narrowed my search down to Mandarin Kitchen. It turned out to be a wonderful satisfying night. Here's what we ordered: Sauteed pea shoots. A must get for any sit down Chinese meal and Mandarin Kitchen cooked it right. Could've used a little more garlic but still tasty. Roasted duck. Moist duck meat and semi crispy skin. The duck was super flavorful. Stir fried pork, chicken and shrimp with scallions. I don't remember the exact name of this dish but that's the description! The dish is cooked in the same sauce as beef lo mein. My waiter recommended this to us and it was on point. We took some of this home and needless to say I was excited to eat it the next day. Steamed oysters. My family always ordered this for special occasions and Mandarin Kitchen did a great job on it. It is somewhat pricey but it's worth it for seafood lovers. Garnished with fresh scallions and ginger. I would recommend Mandarin Kitchen for anyone looking for an authentic Chinese meal. The waiters are friendlier than most Chinese establishments. Great spot (and one of the few spots) in Minneapolis for traditional dim sum. My family likes this spot because they are open early (9:30 for Saturday) and the tables are well spaced a part. The dim sum carts and waiters with trays come by in a constant pace, and service is great. Great Asian food. I have Asian friends who referred me to Mandarin Kitchen. When you walk in they have several tanks with fish, lobsters and crabs, and several cooked ducks. Very impressive. The dinner menu is huge with lots of authentic choices. They have a lot of great lunch specials for less than $10 and they include soup, an appetizer, and the portions are huge. My friend and I came here on a Saturday afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised that they were quick to seat us, we only had a 2 minute wait. Service was really good. Table had a pot of hot jasmine tea and water before we sat down. The carts for dim sum went around quickly and they were kind to show us all the options. The food was okay. Mandarin Kitchen is a solid place for authentic dim sum. It's one of the very few places in the Twin Cities to snap up some dim sum straight from the carts, so I'll go out of my way to come here. It's also one of the few things that'll get me out and about before 9:30am on a weekend, if not the only thing. Tip 1: Get here right before they open (9:30am). There will be a line, but once the doors are open you'll get seated and will almost immediately be presented with food. Otherwise, be prepared to wait on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Tip 2: If you're with a group, try to get a large round table because the spinning lazy susan is a godsend. Tip 3: It's efficient for one person to pay for the table, and just request venmo/cash from everyone after. Tip 4: Lastly, a tip on the tip... gratuity is INCLUDED when you get rang out! Each table comes with soy sauce, garlic-chili sauce, water, and tea. Employees will come around pushing carts of deliciousness. You can nod, point, or even ask for specific things to get food on your table. The servers just tally it all up for your whole table on one card. When you're done, head to the register at the front to cash out. Like if your party of five is checking out, have one designated person to check out and the other four people people wait away from the host desk. I've gone to Mandarin Kitchen for dim sum for the past 10 years. After a couple reviews in TC articles there are more folks coming in to try it but the wait remains about the same. If you get there between 10-11am your chances of being seated are good. A typical wait if your party isn't there is usually 10-20 minutes. MK is still my favorite spot for dim sum because they make their dishes fresh and serve them immediately on carts, rather than sitting under heat lamps. Some of my favs are the shrimp shu mai, taro buns and the chicken feet. If you don't eat pork it's doable to go and still eat plenty as seafood and chicken are used in a lot of the dishes. I would recommend asking the servers as they come by or going with someone familiar enough with all of the dishes. When I go in a group of 8-10 I typically spend around $19-25 which for the quality and freshness along with bottomless tea is pretty good in my eyes. I recommend coming here for dim sum since their dinner prices are high but come Sat/Sun mornings it's worth it. read more

I've been going to Mandarin for years for dim sum, and when I've got a craving for good Chinese. Unfortunately, food quality seems to have gone downhill, while prices have crept up. This is the still the best place for dim sum, but that's because there aren't a lot of options in the twin cities. It's the best of the worst. On a Sunday morning, get there well before they open at 10am or you'll be waiting in line for a while. Once opened they'll usher you to tables quickly and the carts start to come to the tables. On the last couple of occasions I found that some carts just go to the same tables and I don't get the options on them which is usually what I want! It's annoying. Instead, the same guy with sweet pastry buns keep coming back to my table. I end up liking 2-3 items, but stuck getting stuff I'm not particularly excited about due to dying from hunger waiting on carts. So if you get lucky and see these carts then the good stuff to try are beef tripe, BBQ pork buns, siu mai, cheong fan (rolled rice noodles), zhaliang (fried noodle-wrapped crullers), ngao yuk kau (meatballs), and pai gwut (steamed ribs). There are plenty of other dishes, but not all are done right. I'd avoid lunch and dinner here, really high prices for basic Chinese food now. Also, don't expect super friendly service. I've become immune to it here so it doesn't bother me as much. They don't greet you warmly or thank you for your business, they rush you in, don't always refill water, snatch your bill out of your hand and send you on your way. read more

Gladly surprised with the quality and authentic Cantonese cuisine here at Mandarin Kitchen, in Minneapolis no less! One give away that this restaurant is a serious about its food is the aquariums by the entrance and there's quite a good selection too! Any good Asian restaurant, especially seafood restaurants, would have live fishes available so that their customers know that they are getting the freshest fishes! While we did not have any seafood today, every dish was on spot and tastes delicious. A highlight of the night was their specialty tofu, the fried tofu with minced shrimp. This tofu is oval shaped 2 inches in diameter, fried on the outside while soft on the inside, which includes shrimp. This dish is a skilled dish as its not easy to make and fry without it disintegrating or overcooking it. Another standout dish is the jelly fish with pork. I like the texture of the jelly fish, soft yet chewy, salty, sweet and sour. The pork is thinly sliced and served cold. This is a really good appetizer is made very well and is delicious! The sweet and sour pork is an all time favorite and they did not disappoint. The pork is meaty and not fatty, fried well and the gloss of sweet and sour flavors were fantastic, with a hint of lemon. It's with great nostalgia that I'm writing this review now because Mandarin Kitchen has been in my life ever since I moved to Bloomington in 3rd grade (2008!). It went from being a small dim sum joint ( I would say it's the OG dimsum in MN) to expanding its dining service area and now, a line of more 50-70 people before it even opens for dim sum on the weekends. I came back to Mandarin after a long time this past weekend for dim sum. I came around 9:15-9:20 and there was already a line of more than 50 people. Usually, if you're there to line up a bit earlier than I did, you will probably get seated right away. We just happened to miss the seats by 2 families ahead, but the wait wasn't that long since we just had two people. Ordered quite a bit of food (some not pictured) for two people that totaled up to ~$70. Definitely pricey, but a good meal nonetheless. I highly recommend the shrimp crepe (idk the english name for this), congee is my fave, the steamed bean curd was good too, egg tart shell was not flaky..kinda uncooked. Tip: if you want something and it hasn't come to your table, just ask your waiter if they have it and they can bring it to you.There are two places where people crowd for dimsum in MN: Mandarin and Yangtze. If you are in between the two, I would personally recommend Mandarin because it tastes more fresh. If I come back here for there lunch/dinner menu next time, I'll come back with an updated review. read more
