DO NOT order from this place. I understand the difference between "American" Chinese food and authentic- this is neither. I ordered sesame chicken and they give me this dish that has onions and scallions and shriveled up mystery meat in a brown sauce. I call to get it corrected and the woman was incredibly rude- telling me that what they gave me is sesame chicken. Go to any of the authentic places around Boston and surrounding areas and nobody is serving this dish and calling it sesame chicken- in fact they are all serving something very similar to what we were expecting. I have been a customer for years but the quality and content of the food has been going downhil for a while now. The most recent order of Seafood delight contained a few small not jumbo shrimp, hardly any scallops and rubbery crab meat with lots of broccoli and whatever else. Just horrible. The appetizer of pan fried pork ravioli were overcooked and hard. The previous order of Empress Sweet and Sour delight contained a few shrimp but mostly it was a lot of fried chicken fingers which was mostly dough. Angry at myself for going back again. This is my go-to Chinese take out and the food is always good. I usually opt for typical New England Chinese food dishes (pork fried rice, pu pu appetizers, egg roll, etc). The people working there are always friendly and attentive, and the food is prepared quickly for the most part. My only downside is that it is a take-out only place, really. Three stars rating is based on food provided. This is more of a generic Cantonese Americanized Chinese restaurant, growing up in China myself, I'd say the food does not really stand out. We didn't have to wait very long at all for the food. We ordered General Gao's, some kind of mixed vegetables in some kind of sauce and chicken fried rice. It was all pretty good. Nothing over the top awesome, but it was all pretty solid. Nothing was overly greasy or heavy. I like the General Gao a lot and the fried rice was pretty good, too. We were pleasantly surprised by the portions - they were huge. There was enough to feed 3-4 people easily on what we thought would be adequate for 2. I have to say this we have loved Mandarin cafe for years. They are in our neighborhood but to deliver our food 257 feet and charge 4.00 I won't be going back. I know COVID is hitting hard but that delivery fee is excessive and I would have tipped highly had they not charged a four dollar delivery fee. You want four bucks and a tip? First of all the food is very fresh, second no msg, next the pupu platter for two is a generous portion and the price reasonable, off the beaten path a little but easy to park out front and have always had a good experience here, they will bring the order out to the car and are complying with masks etc when I was there.
