Normally, I shy away from reviewing Italian restaurants, since I do not usually feel qualified to judge them fairly. Secondly, I have never before given a 5-Star review to an establishment based on a single visit. But, Al Fresco definitely deserves the highest marks. I even went through the trouble of creating their Yelp profile and filling in all the necessary information. Here's the scenario: My travel buddy and I were on our way back to San Francisco, after having traipsed all through the West Country, Dover, Calais, Paris and back to Bristol. In the entire holiday, she and I never had a decent Italian meal. She is quite the connoisseur, unlike myself. Even while in Paris, she was less than impressed. On our last evening in the "Sceptered Isle", set in a silver sea, she wanted good Italian food and Al Fresco happened to be the closest place to our hotel. After having come from Paris and Amsterdam, we did not have high hopes heading out to this hidden little bistro in a sleepy suburb of Bristol. But, when we arrived, we knew we were in for something extraordinary. The manager (ironically named "Fats") leads us to the bar to wait for a table. We're immediately plied with beverages, as if we were old friends who had come calling all of a sudden. Our table was set and while we're looking over the menu, the scents of Tuscan and Milanese cooking have us properly ravenous. The Calamari Fritti came out with the most delicate, flakey coating and the generous rings of squid beneath the crunch batter were soft and flavourful (not rubbery like a lorry tyre, as they usually are in other places). The salad starter was a dazzling array of colours and flavours, with a massive block of goat cheese set atop it. I am not exaggerating (see the pic), the bloody thing was the size of a hockey puck. Then, my lovely travel buddy's lasagna arrived and it made her eyes roll back into her head, with delight. I opted for a seafood linguine that had mussels, prawns the size of crayfish and a light sauce that did not overpower the delicate taste of the seafood. Afterwards, a knowledgeable waiter patiently explained to us the names and etymology of all the Italian desserts. I never knew that "Tiramisu", loosely translates to "Pull me up". We decided on trying the Affogato (meaning "drowned") and it was pronounced to be the best the best affogato my friend has ever had. The ice cream was drowned in espresso and finished off with a generous shot of amaretto. Another lively waiter named Aldo brought us shots of grappa with cream to finish off the lovely meal. It was, hands down, the best service and food we've had in two weeks of traveling through the UK and Europe. Fats, the manager, arranged for our transport back to the hotel. Later, cuddling in bed with my travel buddy, she and I giggled and could not help but wonder if it had all been some wonderful hallucination that we had jointly participated in. Only the receipt from the restaurant provided any evidence, the next morning. There were no leftovers to bring back to the hotel; it was all so delicious that we devoured every bite while we were there.

I cut into my steack and notuce a thick piece of grizzle running through the middle. Having cut this out and the fat around the outside I was left with a mediocre piece of meat. I noticed that my friends steak was a lot thicker and juicer and looke3d 10oz. Mine looked more like 6oz. He said it tasted very nice. However mine did not, it was very chewy. I called the manager over to complain and he said that all meat was the same from the same butcher and then said to me that he would give me their butchers telephone number to complain to him. Now that is something, me complain to a restaurants supplier. I could not explain ton him that it was up to me to complain. After a heated discussion the manager then said that he would cook me another steak which I declined. He then went into the kitchen and came out with 3 steaks sealed saying to look and see how good they were. Yes of course they were good, mine was not and that was the one we were talking about. I tried to explain this to him that those may have been ok but mine was not and he kept on about how his meat came from a very good butcher. I told him that if I paid £24.50 for a sirlion then I expected a decent sirlion what I got was a piece of meat from a sizzler pub that charged £9.50. He did take the price of the steak of the bill but that was refused by me as that was not the point. My friend then made a compromise and we would not pay for the steak but give the money for waiters gratuities. However I shall not be going back t o this restaurant again. Its a pity because the other times have been enjoyable and decent food.

After the greetings we got down to the very Bristolion tradition of consuming Thatchers Gold. Thankfully they had these in abundance from a large bottle at a not to shabby 3.50. There is a fantastic reasonably priced wine menu, we just didn't fancy it. Decor wise this place is tastefully done but it aint gonna blow your brains out ! Lots of neutral colours. Which for me is just fine. Cause I came to eat not look at the walls ! And eat we did oh yes ! We started with prochitto with melon and calamari. All perfect the calamari was particularly good with a melt on yer tounge texture. For mains my missus opted for the sea food tomatoe pasta dish. Cant remember the name but it was a proper party on the taste buds. I had the Casa pizza which was sublime. I dont normally do pizza eating out but afer seeing a neighbouring tables come I opted and my word am I glad I did. Its was the best pizza ive had in years! Topped off with a limochella shot for dessert this was one unforgettably good meals that didn't break the bank. Oh, and did I mention that the service was great ?

These are clearly their trade mark, but it's not all down to the desserts. Boys, if you want to impress your lady friend, this is indeed the place to take them. The decoration, the lighting and the overall atmosphere set the mood for the perfect romantic evening. The restaurant is small, which helps even more to the atmosphere, but would advise booking in advance to avoid disappointment. Overall the food is outstanding. The dishes are elegantly presented and a treat to your taste buds. The menu has a good selection to cater for all tastes and they even include a dish created in honour of Wales very own Catherine Zeta Jones. Staff are also extremely friendly and helpful. It is true that the prices are not for your every day visit, but worth the quality of the food and service you receive. The only downside is the location, which is a bit unexpected, as once you step out at the end of a lovely experience you just seem to be in the wrong place.

The steak I had was amazing whilst my dad was equally impressed with his dish, although I can't remember what it was. Service is friendly and helpful. The desserts are something else altogether though, it's clear how they made their name through them as the wife and I have tried a couple now and they're delicious. Only real downside is the location. Whilst in town is great for parking etc it's not in the nicest area and the building itself is very small leading to at times some cramped seating. Even this isn't enough to affect it's rating though as it's that good.
