    Tomato based Pho

The staff here is very kind and accommodating. We made a reservation on a busy Friday night for a small birthday celebration The place filled up and the host was wonderful I tried the Pho with tomato, tofu, shrimp paste and crab Tasty 2 of my companions chose a dish with steak and egg rolls on fresh veggies Vegan companion chose a tasty vegan Pho Egg rolls that accommodated vegan diet were the appetizer for all I will go back again.

We had a great experience here! It has a comfortable atmosphere. The service from who I assume was Pho Mama herself was very kind and welcoming! She waited tables while who I assumed was Pho Papa was in the kitchen cooking. The appetizers were nothing to write home about, they tasted like they were your basic freezer appetizers. The drinks were fantastic! I got both the Thai iced tea and the fresh squeezed limeade. I am still dreaming of that limeade! I got the shrimp and pork dumpling soup. It was wonderful! This sliced beef Pho was also delicious! I will be back!

Just want to say, living in Northern Virginia, we have some pretty great Vietnamese dining. I'm so spoiled. It's hard to find anything comparable up here in 'Toga/Malta. That being said...I will definitely be back to Mamma's for my Vietnamese food fix. We ordered the "eggroll" which is not comparable to the Vietnamese spring roll. It's more like what I would expect from a Thai restaurant. It was hot, crispy and great, served with a sweet chili sauce, not nouc mam. I would order this again, 10/10. I saw the "summer roll" with peanut sauce going out to another table, and it looked legit. I'll try it next time. So as far as I can tell, there is not a traditional spring roll with nouc mam on the menu? I started with the Pho with eye of round. This is a pretty standard menu item for a Vietnamese restaurant. The eye of round arrived pre-cooked, which surprised me. I'm used to the meat arriving raw, and then you cook in the super hot broth. I'm going to split my Pho review into separate categories. First, the broth. I liked it. It was a little salty and could have had more spicing and deeper flavor. I'd give the broth a 7/10. The rice noodles were cooked perfectly, 10/10. Protein was a bit light...I'd give that a 5/10. So overall, that's a 7 or 8 out of 10. My friend, who has never had Vietnamese food before, got the chicken Pho. I tried her broth. Her broth wasn't very strongly flavored, and not a lot of chicken meat. The rice noodles looked fine. I'd probably rate that soup a 6/10. Ordering the chicken soup tends to be more of a "I'm new to Vietnamese cuisine" move, the "safe" move. And I totally get it. I saw some other interesting soups listed...I would love to try the beef stew, next. I hope they will add egg noodle for me, which is what I prefer (to bread). Their wonton soup with homemade wontons looks very promising. I had fresh lemonade for my drink, which was great. From what I could see, they do a great job with specialty drinks. Ambiance- very nice! They were busy for a rainy Wednesday night. Typical table and chairs for a Vietnamese place. Service was also nice. Like most Vietnamese restaurants, you pay at the register. I took home my leftovers. GO to this place, it's definitely worth it- especially if you need to get your "fix" of pho, as many of us do. I will update my review as I try out more of their soups. They even have Bun bo Hue on the menu, which is a great spicy soup for the winter.

We came because of the ratings and glad we did. I Had the big bowl in the picture and it was awesome. The wife had the A6 Hoanh thank soup which she loved and ordered another to go. The location is ok and easy to access. The ambience is casual with Vietnam themed decorations.

Pretty good for this area. Not a lot of Vietnamese restaurants in the capital region area and i thought this place was decent. I would Come back. All the soup broths were flavorful and did not contain the oily layer on top. Meats were soft and portion was nice.

I wish I took more pictures but we were hungry I forgot!‍ my partner had a chicken soup with noodles unfortunately I can't remember the name and I had glass noodles with beef. The young lady behind the counter was very sweet and made a few suggestions. The place wasn't busy because we were there pretty early, but I'm sure it does get busy later on in the evening. I'm writing this review a bit late but I can say this... everything was perfect! Delicious and tasty!!

Excellent service. Giving it a 5 star bc it's authentic and it was delicious overall BUT Bun Bo Hue - had some really thick chewy inedible beef. Not spicy at all but it was flabirfil. Noodle was spot on Pho Tai - only a few pieces of beef. My kid who doesn't eat much complained about it The grilled pork chop was spot on and perfect.

First thing you should know, the door is on Route 9 even though the address is Ellsworth Place. It's next to the well marked Bowl eatery, going south; there's a green sign on the wall high above the door. On my first visit I had Pho Dac Biet, the combo with beef, tripe and tendon. A bit light on the protein. The broth is the main thing and it was good and rich, maybe a bit sweet for my taste but that's a quibble. Noodles, which usually don't add much, had a nice flavor. Service is more than friendly (Mama came out and waved at me on the sidewalk while I was trying to find the place) and the room is casual but nicely decorated. Mama's is not going to make me give up my duke ship at the place in Clifton Park, but if I lived in Malta I'd add it to my regular rotation.

We came to Mama's Pho on our way back to Vermont; arriving early at 4 we had the place to ourselves. Staff were courteous and attentive to our order. The place is clean and decorated in a way to feel like you were eating a home cooked meal. Food arrived in a timely manner. We enjoyed Vietnamese coffee, a mango smoothie and Thai Iced Tea to start with our vegetable egg rolls and spring roll; these were delicious starters. Our pho tai, Phố đặc biệt, and Bún bò huế came out soon after with fresh mung bean sprouts, basil and lime. Broths were delightful with noodles and meats. You get a generous amount of food from these bowls. A delightful find.

Pho chay - best in the Albany plus area. Chili is homemade and nuclear!

I was a big fan of the salmon at Van's and almost went with that at Saigon but was convinced to try something different so I went with the pork. I enjoyed my usual small bowl of Shrimp and Pork Wonton Soup ($8.00) with tender dumplings, egg noodles, scallions, cilantro, and crispy shallots in a flavorful broth. Best ever. Upon my recommendation, we both ordered the Shaking Beef, or Bò Lúc Lắc, ($25.) which is a delicious Vietnamese dish of marbled cubes of beef tossed in all the good stuff: soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, a little sugar, butter, garlic, and black pepper. Everything is shaken around in the wok to get a nice all-around sear, hence the name...Shaking Beef! We enjoyed it with Brown Rice instead of Jasmine. Kudos: The cubed filet mignon was cooked perfectly; it was tender and pink in middle. Outstanding! Two reactions: --I did not like the lime dipping sauce because it was very salty (grains of Sea Salt intact)served in a small dish that was on the plate, so next time I will order another type of sauce. However, the beef was flavorful without it. --There were too many sliced red onions and not enough spring onions. Our two orders to go (Pho with Filet and Chicken Wings) were ready when we finished lunch. Grandsons were delighted! Service was efficient and courteous as usual.

We had been wanting to try Simone's Kitchen. But their line for service was sooo long and then the likelihood of finding an available table to eat at looked very discouraging. So, my wife suggested we walk two blocks north to Pho Queen. This was a new location since my last review, but it had the same warmth and comfortable high-back chairs from the former location. Overall, the space is not much different in size from the former; it still only seats about 18-20 customers. We were warmly greeted by the sister of the owner/chef who said she was helping her sister out tonight and offered us seating at a table for two in the front window. The menu still lists a variety of both Thai and Vietnamese style dishes, and I think they still do not offer alcoholic beverages. We didn't inquire about beverages as we were satisfied with the tap water provided. I did see a blackboard that listed a variety of bubble teas. One of the specials that we saw listed on the sidewalk sign from our window seating was Curry Puffs ($10). They were something we'd never had before so, of course we had to try them. The dumpling dough was unlike a wonton wrapper, maybe more like an empanada or pierogi wrapper, and the filling was curry with some vegetables like peas and carrots. There were four of them and they were provided with a side sauce similar to a nuoc mam. They were flavorful and quite enjoyable. My wife ordered the Tofu Phad Khuen Chai ($20). The menu description is sautéed fried tofu with bean sprouts, khuen-chai (Chinese celery) caramelized with sugar, fish sauce, and soy sauce. The dish provided also included carrots and green peppers. My wife enjoyed it but also said it could have been more flavorful. My entrée was a total surprise. I had been thinking about ordering the seafood dish, Phad Cha Talay. But decided instead to order the duck dish, Kaeng Phed Ped Yang. When my meal was served by the Chef it was Phad Cha Talay ($26). I had not mentioned to anyone my original thought. We had a good laugh with the Chef and her sister and I insisted on staying with my "first thought." The Phad Cha Talay was delicious with shrimp, scallops, mussels, squid, broccoli, carrots, green peppers, kaffir lime leaves, rice, and a very flavorful sauce. Each seafood was perfectly cooked to perfection, and the white rice provided an excellent opportunity to soak up all that yummy sauce. Looks like we'll have to plan another visit for me to try that duck dish. Hopefully, when a clairvoyant isn't working.

I wish they had a tofu pho option like most places I go to, but then again, this isn't actually a pho restaurant like I thought it was. Then, I got mango sticky rice, and they gave me about 2 tablespoons of rice. I have never experienced that at a Thai restaurant. Overall, very strange and expensive night for not much payoff. The server was very friendly. I hope it was a fluke, but it was my first time there so I don't think I will be coming back

Then came the pineapple fried rice with pork belly. Savory, caramelized pork belly met bright bursts of pineapple in a perfect sweet-salt balance. No negotiations. Just joy. Fifteen minutes later, box in hand, the real event began. Across melting ice. A sharp jaywalk. A cut through the gas station. A full sprint toward the train station as the gates threatened to close and my family waited. It was an unofficial, record-breaking mile fueled entirely by fried rice ambition. Once the cold air finally left my lungs, I cracked open the box. Steam rose into the winter air. The smell alone was victory. Palata (deep fried layered & flattened dough), commonly served at street food stalls, is reminiscent of scallion pancakes (without the scallion). In this case, it was served with a chicken, potato, and dahl stew. The saltiness of the stew was tamed by the layered and fatty dough.
