I really wanted to like this place, the food looked good online and I came in excited to try it. Unfortunately, the Pad Thai just wasn't what I expected. It tasted more like a chicken stir fry than a true Pad Thai. The noodles were on the dry side, there wasn't much peanut sauce, and instead of the classic balance, it had whole peanuts on top along with bell peppers, bean sprouts, carrots, egg, and chicken. I asked for it to be very hot, but it came out pretty mild. Overall, the dish didn't have much flavor and fell flat for me. I also tried the spring rolls. They looked a little unusual--definitely more meat than vegetables--and they were soft instead of fried crispy. That said, the flavor was actually pretty good, just not what I typically expect from spring rolls. I had high hopes, but sadly this was just mid compared to other Thai I've had. read more

Great food and huge portions for the price you're paying. I ordered the udon and ended up with enough to be full and take home for later. Just grab somebody at the front counter if there's nobody in the shop and they'll send someone up immediately. Not worth the drive to this place if you want to receive bad service. Upon arrival, I guess stood there waiting to be seated as the employee walked in front of us and ignored us then passed us again as we were not even around her visual sight this upset us because we had great expectations to eat here seeing that it has more than 3 stars but I guess it just wasn't what we expected. I finally went over and ordered #10 the beef Vietnamese noodles and immediately when he put in on the table the sourest smell in the world. I tried to eat it looked good but tasted horrible. The food is good , but the cleanliness and atmosphere may make you question your dining choices. It hits the spot for sure; especially in an Asian food desert. Having said that, it seems that the flavors are a bit muted. The bone broth isn't nearly as rich and flavorful as most I've tasted, and the ingredients seem a bit over-cooked - especially the egg, which is over-fried instead of soft-boiled. I would also choose to take my food to go. The restaurant is cold and the tables (at least the one we sat at) are dirty, with the condiment jars sticking to the table, leaving rings. The best part is the adjacent market which has anything and everything you'll need when it comes to international cuisine. read more

Came to Evansville for a work. Boss found the place and thought we give it a try since the reviews were good. It's a hole in the wall place. Restaurant is not very clean. Restaurant is attached to the Asian store. Very small. I would not recommend this place for big groups. Very limited space. The Crab Rangoon was very plain. There was no crab chunks. The cream cheese was not flavorful. My boss got the Pad Thai and it did not taste like Pad Thai...my Beef Chow Fun was decent. The beef was not chewy. The noodles were cooked fine. It wasn't the best Chow Fun that I've ever had though. Heads up, you go grab your own drink from the drink fridge. read more

My kind of place. Just a couple of woks in a little corner of a grocery store where Mama slings her offerings. I don't ever order pad Thai because it's often too sugary, but when she said "I make a very good pad Thai!" I took that as a signal that it was the thing to order. And it was delicious. Fresh. Well balanced spicy/salty/sweet. Buns and dumplings were wonderful and homemade too, and everyone in our party was happy with an array of noodles and rice. I have searched high and low for a place that has bibimbap better than Mama's Kitchen and have failed. This is authentic, cooked from scratch stuff that leaves a lasting impression. The restaurant seems a little rinky dink when you enter but the experience is amazing. The staff was very helpful in explaining the entrees and were super nice to me when I broke a glass trying to figure out the self serve water. Wouldn't mind improvement on the table service here! Wow. This place is a hidden gem. Tucked away along side an Asian supermarket far from the main shops and restaurants is this authentic mom and pop style Asian restaurant. They serve authentic dishes freshly prepared for you. I ordered the inhouse made pork bun which was delicious and then the pork noodle soup which was insane. It was so fresh they literally walked into the supermarket (the two are connected) and took the bok choy for my soup off the rack and used that for my dish. Went to Mama's expecting a great dish. I read all the yelp reviews before I went. Many praises were given for their Pad Thai. So, of course I go in and order Pad Thai. Well that certainly was a mistake. First of all customer service was horrible, you have to make your own water. When I ordered I wasn't even asked what spice level nor what type of protein I wanted. It certainly was not Pad Thai that was made, it seem more like a stir fried noodle dish. Being from Thailand I always order Pad Thai from any restaurant that makes it just to see how authentic it was. I watched them make it in front of me which was neat, but it just seemed like an Instant Pad Thai premixed sauce was applied upon cooking the noodles. The dish wasn't salty or bland but was lackluster in flavor, a little more juices it could possibly be considered Lard Na. I couldn't even eat half of it but didn't want to be rude so took it Togo, but almost $10 bucks for dish that was not what you expected kind of sucks! But, lessons learned. I gave them 2 stars just because the presentation was nice and when you add extra chili oil and Siracha it was ok! I travel a lot and use Yelp to find good spots, but hope this review helps someone else. read more

This is my experience. My husband and I visit this restaurant often. We enjoy the vegetable noodle soup. The portion is generous and the price is unbeatable. Sometimes the service is slow, usually because the people who run the store are the ones who also cook the meals, but knowing this we patiently wait and are taken care of in an efficient manner. The owner of the store, we call her Mama, is a great lady and usually she has a smile to greet us with. The other employees are generally friendly, too. Sometimes we can tell they have a lot going on so we don't engage them too much, other times when they look to have some time, we'll chat a while. Overall the restaurant meals are tasty and filling as well as satisfying - and the grocery attached is unique and diverse with great prices. I read all the reviews here and I was like I wanna give it a try. They had only 1 thai dish on the menu the rest was either chinese or korean. The pad thai was soaking in soy sauce. what the hell is that??? She even mixes it up for you. what the hell, can I not choose what I want to add into MY pad thai?! I absolutely love this place! I wouldn't come here with high expectations of a great atmosphere or extensive menu. But the food speaks for itself and makes up for everything the atmosphere lacks. We had the pad Thai, beef noodle soup, dumpling soup, egg rolls, and crab Rangoon. All cooked right in front of us. Huge portions. Only water and hot tea served (self serve at that), but if you walk next door while they're cooking, you can get just about any drink you'd want to go with it. Love this place! read more
