The decor is very dark with a floor to ceiling center bar, large windows through out the dining room, and excessively loud hip hop music. The crudo starter was stellar. The texture difference with the crumble and delicate fish was out of the ordinary. My entree short ribs with peanut sauce fell short. The meat was extremely tender and juicy. The peanut sauce a blend of whole nuts and puree was a delicious pairing. But one of the four ribs was meatless and just the bone. The server explained the meat had simply fallen off the bone and was in the dish. But the meat was no where to be found in the dish. The one item that perplexed me was the server's uniform. Considering the swanky mid upscale atmosphere I couldn't determine why the female servers wore Hooters attire? The male servers were covered, t shirts and pants. But the females wearing baby tshirts and micro mini shorts. This mismatch of poor taste uniform compared to the overall theme of jellyfish could use immediate improvement. I failed to observe this type of server attire anywhere else dining in Montreal.

The menu is seasonal and changes based on availability of ingredients or on the chef's whims. I see mention in other reviews of ordering a la carte but this didn't seem like an option for us as only the prix fixe menu was offered ($120 per person for roughly 6 courses). From start to finish, the food was creative and delicious. The plating was more rustic in nature as opposed to very refined, high end Michelin restaurants where a dish has many components. Here, the dishes are simply presented, but packaged with flavor and absolutely perfectly executed. It is honestly quite impressive that the chef is able to do this more or less by himself each night. It does mean that pacing was a bit inconsistent, but we weren't in a hurry and could see the chef was hustling behind the counter. We were not offered any sort of wine pairing with the meal and didn't see one mentioned on the menu, though we did hear talk of wine pairings so I'm not sure why this wasn't offered to us. Instead, we opted for BTG options, of which we were kindly offered a small tasting pour to make sure it was to our liking. The wines they selected to pair with each dish or two were quite good, so I can only imagine the full wine pairing would've been great as well. Wines here definitely skew more natural/minimal intervention though I think if you let them know that you want something less natty/funky, they can probably find something great for you. Lastly, I had indicated on the reservation that we were celebrating a wedding anniversary and yet there was no mention or acknowledgement of this, and it felt awkward to ask about it. It's too bad as it would've made what was otherwise a great meal an even more memorable experience. This coupled with the lack of mentioning any sort of formal wine pairing detracted from the overall experience but these are service/FOH issues. The food is without a doubt 5 stars.

We've been on the same block several times. Huh? In three days, 70% of our vacation was spent on two blocks. Lawrence is tiny, seven two tops and a large bar. You can stick your nose into the kitchen. It's right there. Sea Urchin Linguine! We took two seats at the bar, and realized, although small, Lawrence is designed beautifully. It never feels snug, just cozy, enveloping you in a comforting blanket of graciousness and warmth. Lainie and Anna took special care of us, Lainie a well versed, gregarious sommelier, and Anna a purveyor of the love of food and hospitality. Sea Urchin Linguine! I started with the lobster with green asparagus, a wonderful palate cleanser. Our other appetizer was the zucchini blossoms with smoked chicken offal, which was scrumptious. For our entrees, we both ordered the SEA URCHIN LINGUINE. I fell in love and Lawrence provided a memory that will remain forever, like the pasta buttons at Metamorphosi in Rome, the cacio e pepe at Aimo e Nada in Milan, and the risotto at Vecchia Lanterna in Turin. My taste buds were delirious, and I was in a culinary hallucination. For desert, my spouse ordered the tarte tatin, with a soft fromage on top, and guanciale, a cured pork jowl. What sounds weird was out of this world delicious . I chose for my desert SEA URCHIN LINGUINE! I didn't want my love affair to end. La Dolce Vita. We loved everything about Lawrence, and I will miss it like a paramour from days past. The memories will remain.
