The food is french style. We ordered couple of plates and shared. The bread was a bit hard but salad was ok. We also got the beef which was cooked well but the sauce was quite sweet. For the money, just an edge over 3.5 stars, of course we did bring our own wine. We did NOT get the table d'hote, but might if we had a larger group/appetite. Service was good and responsive. We brought and old merlot, so we had beef. The strip lion was surprisingly well cooked (seared) if not a bit undercooked (order medium). Peppercorn sauce was amazing. Cute little BYOB on prince Arthur between st Laurent and st Denis. Hearty French food, classic menu, portion size is just right to enjoy all three courses of the table d'hôte. We shared : Escargots served in a buttery garlic sauce. About 8-10medium sized escargots, really yummy and tasty. 4/5 (could've had a little more garlic/parsley/salt!) Foie gras with tomatoes confit. 3/5. Nothing too crazy Filet mignon with "sauce au poivre". *WINNER OF THE NIGHT* 5/5. Meat was cooked to perfection, juicy and soft, and the sauce was soooo delicious! Would come back just for this. Magret de canard (duck breast) with grilled vegetables and dark sauce. 4/5. It was good, but not that memorable. Amaretto crème brûlée -5/5. The perfect balance of creamy, crunchy top and a kick of amaretto. Moelleux au chocolat -5/5. The French know how to do this. Overall, adding this place to my list of favourite BYOBs based on the quality of the food! We had a wonderful experience at Le Square. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. There was a cool buzz about the place. The chef (or owner?) came out to warmly greet several regulars/friends. There was lots of hugging and laughter. Loved the vibe. I judge French restaurants by the French onion soup and mine was delicious. Our other dishes were on point - flavorful and well presented. Other review have mentioned that the restaurant is pricey. I didn't get that impression but, being from the US, I had the benefit of the exchange rate. As an aside, I was surprised to learn that 50% of the restaurants in Montreal are BYOB. Yes, Le Square does not serve alcohol. If you're so inclined, there is a micro brewery selling beer less than a block away and a small convenience store that has a limited selection of wine. I recommend bringing your own. read more

We came here with 3 children ages 3, 3 and 6. We got a nice spot outside next to the fountain which was perfect. Because our children didn't want anything on the menu, the chef graciously accommodated us by making a special grilled chicken meal with salad and fries- the chicken was delicious! I ordered the grilled chicken salad which was so good I could not stop eating it. We all ordered dessert and I highly recommend the chocolate cake with ice cream. Overall we had a wonderful experience for our last meal in Montreal. Perfect ending to a fabulous trip! A pretty nice byob on Prince Arthur street serving up traditional French fare. We shared the escargot, which was fine followed by a tartare for my companion and the magret de canard (duck breast) for myself. The tartare was quite good, but my duck breast didn't have the fat rendered at all, so it was not as good as it could have been, however the ratatouille it was served with was great. Not very good bang for my buck, as I would have appreciated some potatoes or salad to accompany the duck and ratatouille. Service was slow as well. read more

My friend for 26 years is getting married tomorrow. I haven't seen her in 6 years. We want to go somewhere special for dinner. We couldn't go where we wanted originally because my friend forgot to make a reservation so we're walking around while I'm searching Yelp for a nice place. Find this one so I immediately book a reservation for 10 min later. We arrived and the hostess couldn't find our reservation. The acknowledged something went wrong and after 2-3 min they got us a table even though they claimed the restaurant was fully booked for the evening. (when we arrived at 6:30pm the restaurant was 20% full) we were grateful. The server, a blonde young beautiful woman, was efficient and delightful. The food was amazing!!! Every dish was simply amazing. We're having a wonderful time. Server asks if she can bring the bill. I say yes. As soon as I paid she notifies us we have 5-10min to leave. We were a bit shocked but we see the place is getting busier so we say, ok fine. Less than 2 min later another server comes over and says you have to go now, the next reservation is here and we need this table. WTF?!?!?! We were wrapping up. My friend was in the washroom. And... How rude! We still took our time (2-3min more) and finally left somewhere else to spend more money. That rude server was why I didn't give five stars. Plus the fact that if they have/had sitting times we should have been told. read more

Le Square is close to St-Laurent which is nice, but it's also close to Café Campus, which is not so nice...I wouldn't want to eat here late on a Friday or Saturday night! When I ate here, a group of American students nearly skipped on their bill, so the waitstaff were super edgy afterwards and one of them confronted me as I was leaving: "Did you pay?", he asked, which was a bit startling considering I paid with a credit card about 5 minutes prior! In any case, I don't think I'll be coming back...I just can't justify the cost. read more

I really didn't like this place. Ended up there by accident because place next door (which of course is excellent) had closed early because some air conditioning problem in the kitchen. The service was ok. Food was below average at best. Escargot had 0 taste to them and the portion was very very small. I got the flank steak for $23 which again was absolutely tiny...I can't even explain, I've never seen a steak this small, specially a flank steak. I asked for medium well closer to medium but they brought out well done. My gf had a an appetizer salmon tartar, which of course was the smallest thing I've ever seen but I guess it was an appetizer so she should be happy that she had one spoon full :). Very weird place. Quaint local spot. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Enjoyed the French onion soup (very different than in the States. It's a nice French restaurant with a cute little terrace right on Prince Arthur. Their service is polite and pretty quick, so you won't have to wait too long. It's BYOB, so now you can choose your own wine at the SAQ and bring it with you to drink at the restaurant. I strongly recommend their tartare, very good choice actually. Amazing restaurant. Everything was excellent. The prixe fix option was absolutely worth every penny and very affordable for a dinner (about 40 CAD). The French onion soup was the best that I've ever had. The pork chop with aligot purée, filet mignon, and duck breast were all excellent. For the desert, make sure to try the creme brûlée. We were a group of over 32 people and unfortunately 7 canceled. We expected to be divided and not sit all together when we arrived, but as we already sat and started drinking our wine on a table of 8, we were asked to move to a table of 6. So two of us ended up being isolated behind the main table (in front of the stinky bathroom), until we had a surprised visitor who joined later. We understand they don't want to lose money, but the situation was badly handle, the host was very arrogant. Plus when a couple and their baby left a bit later, he came back to ask if we could take their spot. And as I complained about that, it was no surprise that my fish came overcooked and that I found a plastic hair from a brush in my desert, at the very end. We will never come back after this third visit, as the previous ones were not conclusive, not to forget I got sick from their tartar last time. If you still decide to head there, keep in mind it wasn't good value for what it was, 63$ (tx&15% tip included) for three services. Wine and coffee not included. read more

Like many Plateau restaurants, it had at least thee varieties of Tartare, including game. I had the beef and enjoyed it. We were practically yelling at each other at many points in the night-not a comfortable setting for a quiet couple. We ordered two appetizers - the avocado and king crab and filo wrapped goat cheese. The first was good but too heavy on the avocado and the second was great. We both ordered the lamb shoulder and white beans as a main course (because the beef carpaccio wasn't available). The main course was disappointing. The lamb was very fatty/cartilage-filled and the beans were hard/undercooked. They were served in a bowl in a couple of centimeters of a broth. No part of the dish had flavour. The small appetizers and relatively small amount of main course was expensive. We decided to forgo dessert to save money and possibly avoid a boring dessert.
