Your wait times for a simple hamburger are disappointing. Consumers are waiting 30 plus minutes just for a single burger. Even the busiest of burger chains could do better. Or at least tell customers, before you let them pay, that they are facing that lengthy of wait. I would've gladly left the line and waited until after my appt to eat. But I assumed when I stopped in 45 minutes before my appt time that I wouldn't have to use 30 of those minutes waiting for a burger. If the wait is necessary due to staffing or whatever the issue is, then please just let folks know before they pay. Saves you the inconvenience of having to issue refunds, save the consumer the inconvenience of waiting for you to issue the refund. Much appreciated. Otherwise, the food is always good and I have zero complaints. But that uninformed wait time will always have me leaving a one star review. read more

When I found Mama Possum's in my Yelp search it has a 5 star rating. But when I put it in my gps it took me to a different Mama Possum's, the one I'm about to review, which has a 4 star rating. In fact I didn't notice there were two MPs until I sat down to write this review. I have subsequently visited the other MPs and will post my review of it in a few days. Travelling north of Danville on Virginia State Highway 41, a 4 lane road with an odd mishmash of houses and businesses, you will eventually arrive at the community of Mount Hermon. Here you will find a MPs. From what I have learned, a restaurateur bought the rights to use the name Mama Possum's and opened this place. Otherwise, the two restaurants are completely unrelated. And while neither one is worth the star ratings they enjoy on Yelp, one is better than the other one, though not by much. This MPs has a very lively atmosphere. Very cute and quaint inside, the walls are lined with licence plates from various states and other signage from bygone days. My server was one of the nicest and most patient I have ever encountered.  In order to sample more items, I decided to forego fries. I settled on a burger, a hot dog, a bologna sandwich, and sweet tea. Cheeseburger: in a word--average. Nothing great, nothing bad. Not juicy. Not dry. Bland. Very forgettable. Hot dog all the way: Chernobyl Red wiener had a different, unusual taste. It wasn't necessarily bad, and overall the hot dog was actually pretty good--but alone, the wiener was a little different. The chili was competent, and the slaw was good. Bologna sandwich: they claim to deep fry it, then serve it with mustard and onions, and it was indeed very tasty--my favorite thing today. Sweet tea: pretty average in flavor and sweetness. The problem here is that the food is just not anything to get excited about. I wanted so much to love it. But it is bland and average. No amount of cute decor or friendly staff can change that. read more

Craving a burger and fries. Drove out to Mt Hermon location. About 30 minutes from me. First time at this location. Great food and staff. Got real busy that evening. Recommend this place if you ever get a craving for a cheeseburger and fries. read more

Cute, tasty and very affordable would best describe this little place. It's very retro inside from the formica tables to the counter and stools, not to mention the sign outside! When I arrived at 11:30 the place was already hopping! I had the two hot dog special all the way (mustard, chili, onions & slaw) which comes with fries and a drink all for just $5.39. I kind of like that it came wrapped in paper like in the old days, rather than served on a plate. It just added to the atmosphere. The fries are crinkle cut and really nothing to write home about, not bad, just not great, but I'm not in to crinkle cut anyway. I think I'd substitute onion rings next time. The hot dogs are the southern style red dog, which normally I'm not fond of, but the toppings made it. The chili is good and the slaw was sweet with a little tart bite. That taste stayed with me for a couple days, in a good way. I wanted to return again, but I live a couple hours away. Darn! The waitress was friendly and nice and checked on me just enough. Fast service and the food came up just as quick. There was a constant flow of people in and out of the joint, which by the way is very clean, even the bathrooms. All and all I was a happy camper. read more

Our first time here. We like little hometown diners so this was great for us. Didn't know what to expect but the parking lot was nearly full at 7pm. Good sign. Sat at the counter and enjoyed prompt service and courteous attention the whole time we were there. The food is just what you would expect from a flat grill establishment. We both got the bbq plate. No smoker in the back but just good affordable food. We will be back. read more

Mama Possum's is a neat little place about 2 or 3 miles just outside the Danville city limits on Franklin Turnpike/Hwy-41 in the Mt.Hermon community. A fastfood type setup, but there burgers are far better than regular fastfood joints, they serve some excellent burgers & hot dogs along with a host of other items like chicken sandwiches, fried bologna sandwiches & BBQ along with a few other items. They also have icecream & milkshakes which I hear are great. The double cheeseburger I had was pretty awesome, 2/3lb of beef piled with fresh toppings, it's a biggun. The hot dog was pretty outstanding too, they have won some "Best HotDog" awards for the Danville area, they use the good ol' red hot dogs on toasted buns, with the mustard, chili, slaw & onions it was a great dog. I'm usually not a big fan of onion rings, but they looked so good I opted for them over fries & they were outstanding. The BBQ they serve is from Hursey's BBQ in Burlington NC, so it is a very good product in my opinion. BBQ plates & sandwiches are available at Mama Possum's. Mama Possum does add a sauce to the BBQ to give it their own pizazz. They do have a drive-thru window, which I think is mainly to pick up phone-in orders as there is no "speaker" to order at & no outside menu. I suppose you can order at the window, but it may take longer than regular fastfood places as they make your order when you place it, no sandwiches lying around waiting to be bought. Sign on back of the building where drive-thru starts says "For Faster Service Phone In Your Order". Any time I'm in Danville & want a good burger or hot dog, I'll definitely take the time to drive the extra few miles from the main part of town to go to Mama Possums. I'll say it's a popular place, I was there for lunch around noon & the parking lot was slam packed... good thing I had called my order in & picked it up at the window. This place was absolutely fantastic. You have to know that going to a place named Mama Possums is going to be incredible southern cooking. The milkshakes? Great. The BBQ pork sammy? Great. The fries smothered in gravy? Piping hot great. Onion rings? You're not READY. Go eat here and tip them well. read more

We're from out of town and when we visit sometimes we'll eat here for a quick meal. Normally it's pretty decent for what you pay for and would expect from the place. I usually get the BLT and it's good. Tons of bacon and the bread is fresh. Ate there last night and the grease had soaked thru both slides of bread. Of course it didn't help that it was on the bottom of the bag. Which had2 hamburgers and 2 hotdogs on top of it. ‍ so peeled the bread off and ate just the lettuce and bacon. Couldn't eat the tomato because they were old, soft and mushy. Long story short bacon still had a lot of grease left on it and made me sick that night. read more

Hey Mama's is the first place that I told straight up that I'm a yelper. I feel this place should not have to worry about Yelp. The food is the same when ever you go and the service is so good. If you ever been on a cruise and seen the service and how awesome it is I would put mama possum's right under them. The good: Great hot dogs, bbq, home made chips, and really everything I've tried minus the burgers. I really like the old school diner theme of the place. The fresh shakes are really good as well. The bad: As mentioned above, the burgers are horrid. Frozen beef just doesn't have a place outside a fast food restaurant on the same level as say McDonald's. I mean most burgers I get from concession stands at high school football games aren't even frozen. I'm not guessing with my taste buds that the beef is frozen either. It's pretty easy to see "frozen beef patties" on the box beside the grill. It also doesn't help their case that the owner (owner's wife, whoever she is) is extremely rude. Constantly cutting you off when you phone in an order and really sounds like she's yelling in some condescending tone into the phone. Doesn't make me want to support her business at all. I still give it 3 stars for the non beef related food items they sell. I enjoy those throughly. But with the above mentioned issues, I still only stop in maybe a half dozen times a year. A far cry from what it was when they first opened. read more

Burger was pretty good. Fresh frozen fries kind of threw me off for the best burger in town. But what really got me was i asked for cheddar instead of that processed crap you get anywhere. They had cheddar that they use for the salads, so my waitress said sure. Only to be told by the owner or manager that they don't do that. Come on.... really. Up charge the cheese if you must, but don't say no on such an easy request. I won't be back... best burgers start with real cheese. read more

Small family restaurant! Good food and great service! Best onion rings in town. Prices are very reasonable for the burger combos. So if you're hungry with not a lot of cash this is the place to go! They also have soft serve ice cream and shakes! read more

Almost all food is frozen. The "best burger in town" would be made with fresh meat and served with fresh fries. What a joke. Dysfunctional drive thru.. It's supposed to be a drive thru for pick up orders but I have waited behind someone who pulled up and ordered on the spot, meanwhile my called in pick up order was ready. The owners refuse accommodate special needs such as allergies. The workers are given shirts with different themes such as "mama possum's cigar lounge".. This really confuses the intended theme. The hotdogs are basic and boiled. You better order lots of condiments on your burger if you enjoy any flavor to your food. Overall they seem to worry about saving a buck, frozen bland food, dysfunctional staff and theme. Really owners seem to think that they know best and don't want to hear out customers suggestions. I love this place. The food and the price is great but the milkshakes are the reason I stop. They are like the old time milkshakes so thick the usually suck the straw together I would bet you could hold the cup upside down and nothing would come out but not gonna try it. It has a drive thru but if you call your order in ahead you are in and out in 1-5 min. Of course if ya order at the window expect times of 10-30 mins as your food is made to order and this place stays busy all the time I have never seen an empty lot. One of the best dishes I have got here is the BBQ plate which is delicious and the portions are decent. All in all for the money this is the place to go. read more

The food is subpar although they claim to be known for their "famous hotdogs". I will eat there occasionally just because of the convenient location. However after the extremely rude and unprofessional encounter I've had with the waitress, (which is not the first time btw) whom I called to place an order with recently, I will no longer be dining at this establishment. When I called ahead to place my order, I'm greeted with a short, annoyed response from a woman who acted as if I was being an inconvenience for her to stop what she was doing (im assuming serving hotdogs to customers, nasty attitude on the side) and answer the phone. She was so distasteful and unpleasant on the phone and hung up on me after I told her my order. No "is that all?" No "thank you". No "we'll have it ready" Nothing. Needless to say, I did not pick up my order. Food, ok. Prices, ok. Bad customer service. Not acceptable. If you want diarrhea Mama Possums is your only option, drive the extra 7 miles and go to the original one. The food may not be any better, but at least they treat their customers with a little bit more courtesy. read more
