    Brunswick Stew

What a great example of Southern Hospitality and great food! I went to Mama Possum's for lunch today and I was totally pleased with my experience. Nicki was my server. She's a very nice young lady, super friendly and kind. I asked what Brunswick Stew was and not only did she explain it, they offered me a sample to taste. It was delish! I also had a beef hot dog southern style and a cheeseburger. Everything was great! Give Mama Possum's a try.

Looking for yummy burger and dog joint? Then stop here. Can't find it? Keep driving to the right rear area of the shopping center. Once you pass the right side you'll see the drive in and signage. But about my visit: The folks inside (tiny dining area- it's a drive-in after all...) we're super nice. I got 2 loaded dogs, and my other dining partner got the double cheeseburger. Man oh man was that burger sloppy goodness. The dogs are the pink style and came with the perfect amount of chili, slaw, onions and mustard. I'm so glad I got two. Now, I wouldn't eat here if looking for haute food, but if you want really divey eats w/ down to earth people, this is your spot.

Pure old school drive in hole in the wall. The wait staff was just as you'd expect, sweet, sassy and adorable. If you're looking for a great burger and shake cruise on in.

Wow! Amazing little hole in the wall locals favorite. You'll miss it if you aren't looking for it. There's not a big menu, it's what you see on the board on the wall. Classic burger and dog place - this is simple food, done well. No frufru fancy playing here. The kid and I got double cheeseburgers and fries, while Hubby got the "Ribeye Steakum" which is what the menu calls it, so we were expecting steakums. Surprise! It actually is thinly sliced rib eye! If you are a fan of cheeseburgers, get the double. It is worth it. Super friendly service and a drive in on top of it - you don't see those much anymore, though we were traveling and tired of the truck. We ate inside. Looking for a fast, simple, very affordable meal? Plug this place in your GPS (or you'll never find it)!

I have now completed my Mama Possum's 2020 Tour in Danville, Virginia. I regret that I must report that both offer very average diner food.  As I mentioned in my review of the other Mama Possum's, these two places are, odd as it may seem, related only by name, and operate completely independently of each other. This review is for the original, which is located in Danville proper. This one is a tick better than the other, but not enough to elevate it above three stars. I ordered a double cheeseburger, an all beef hot dog all the way, a fried bologna sandwich, and a sweet tea. Double cheeseburger: not bad, not good. Complete absence of char, it tasted steamed and bland. The cheese was perfect, though, and made it decent. Hot dog: I opted for the all beef wiener, and it was pretty good. The chili here is better than the other MP's and the slaw is notably above average, also better than the other MP's. Overall, though, this hot dog was merely good. Fried bologna: I actually prefer the version served by the other MP's, as they have a thicker slice of bologna with better flavor.  Sweet tea: this was the best thing I had today, it was southern sweet and had excellent tea flavor. They boast about their Brunswick stew with a large banner in front of the restaurant, so I asked for a sample. It was...average. One really nice thing about my experience at MP's today was the service. My server was extraordinarily kind and genuinely displayed genteel southern hospitality. The quaint "Specials" sheet (see photo) is also choc-full-o southern charms, such as the misspelling of sandwich, the omission of spaces, and the total disregard for the Oxford comma, for which I am a staunch and adamant supporter. But inevitably it comes down to the food, and MP's just doesn't deliver anything that would warrant a return trip.

If you didn't know this little jewel was here, you'd probably never see it. I admit I drove by it a few times the first time I was looking for it back in the day. It is off the road a little ways, between a used car lot and a furniture store, but it sets behind both of those places a bit hidden, you actually turn in the furniture stores driveway and go behind the building and there sits Mama Possums, they'll come out to your car to take your order as soon as you pull up, they do have a few seats inside, but I've never been in. There is also another Mama Possums across town, but they are only related by name, different owners. This is the original old school one that's been around for many years. I love their burgers and hot dogs here, the thin burger patties are cooked on the flat top with a little crust on the outside, the double cheeseburger is a winner. They use the good ol' red hot dogs here, my favorite. A hot dog all the way with mustard, slaw, chili and onions or a double cheeseburger is a tough decision for me when I'm here...decisions decions.

OMG. This is not a place you will find if you are not looking for it. But MAN... well worth the trip. The food was amazing and plentiful. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. And the arnold.plamer they made me was one of the best I have ever had. Definitely find this place if you find yourself in this neck of the woods.

Best hotdogs in town and you can get beef instead of pork. The service is quick and kind.

The atmosphere had that nostalgic charm that's hard to fake -- soft warm lighting, classic comfort-food smells drifting through the air, and the kind of relaxed, familiar vibe where you instantly feel at home. The fried chicken was phenomenal -- perfectly golden and crispy on the outside with juicy, flavorful meat underneath. That crunchy seasoned coating had the kind of homemade taste that instantly reminds you why classic Southern comfort food never goes out of style. The mashed potatoes were creamy and rich with smooth gravy poured generously over top, and the coleslaw added the perfect cool, tangy balance to the plate. Even the biscuit tasted fresh from the oven -- buttery, fluffy and impossible not to finish. This wasn't trendy food trying too hard. It was authentic, comforting, soul-satisfying cooking served in a place that feels frozen in time in all the right ways. Like an old-school Friday night dinner spot where the recipes haven't changed in decades because they never needed to.

I got the 2 piece snack, with chicken legs, potato salad, slaw, biscuit. I enjoyed my lunch. I did not go inside. I just went through drive through. The waitress was really friendly, and I liked the food better than several of the other restaurants on Piney Forest that I have visited. The slaw seemed different than any I had ever tasted. I am unsure what the difference was. It seemed to have less vinegar, and the spices seemed different. It was tasty though. The biscuit was really good, and I liked the potato salad. Chicken was tasty too, crisp, and not overly salty. I am attaching a photo..
