Wonderful neighborhood diner with cheerful waitstaff and great food. Highly recommend!

Passing through here and found this place and it was great! Such a small and quaint spot. Very casual, the servers are super nice. You seat yourself when you come in, wherever you can find a spot. The menu is straightforward and the prices are reasonable. I ordered the BLT with onion rings, and my friend got the hot hamburger with fries. Everything came out fresh and hot, and very quickly. I would love to come back and try their breakfast! It looked like it was pretty good. Lunch for the both of us came out to around 20 dollars, which is awesome. My family and I have been going to Ruben's Restaurant for the past thirty years! The reason, because the staff there makes you feel welcomed, and the food is delicious! Nothing fancy, no inflated prices! It is homecooked meals that are served by the nicest ladies who care about their customers! So many restaurants, once they take your order you never see them again until they give you the bill. Doesn't happen at Ruben's! The ladies are always asking," More coffee? What can I get for you?" The atmosphere and great food , started by Ruben, years ago, continues with his son and his staff. I've been here twice, and the food has no taste. The hotdogs taste like they said, and water all day.

From the moment my wife and walked thru the front door, everyone at this popular local grill was warm and friendly. The atmosphere is retro, casual and relaxing. Our burgers and fries were pretty good too, as was the homemade beef and vegetable soup. If you want a simple meal at good prices with great service, I would highly recommend this joint. read more

This is a good sized mom&pop diner with some nice sandwiches, a few plates, and a nice breakfast menu. The place is clean and well lit, and has both stools at the counter and booths. The walls are loaded with memorabilia and pictures of customers - nicely done. The chili dog here is pretty good, but a shade away from being outstanding as usually dressed. There is simply too much slaw and/or onions, and too little chili, and the chili is nicely seasoned. The wiener is the classic Souther red, and the bun is fresh and soft. I went back in and ask one of the nice ladies if I could order less slaw and onions, and a little more chili next time - and I was told: Of course, you can Darling. The price for a dog is $1.10. The hamburger was very nice - thin pattie with excellent flavor, nice fresh bun. I find that on thin pattie burgers, toppings of mayo, pickles, and lettuce works best for me - it did here. Regular hamburger is $2:65; cheeseburger is $2.90. Great service from very friendly people. They apparently have another location on Franklin Turnpike. read more

I want to declare to the world that Ruben's has the best barbecue sandwich ever made. I am fully aware that they don't even make their own barbecue and that is comes from a tub and that no one even knows they sell barbecue sandwiches. None of this concerns me. It is the best, hands down. Ruben's is a Danville establishment. I have always liked the idea that my parents used to eat here when they went to the same high school that I did. There used to be a jukebox, on which I always played Bob Seger. There also used to be a milkshake machine, which has long passed on. A second Ruben's location was added on Rt. 41, and while the food is more or less the same, something seems a little off from the original. I guess that is how it goes. They are famous for their hamburgers and hot dogs, which I recall being delicious, though I haven't had either in years. I can't waste fleeting Ruben's opportunities on anything but barbecue sandwiches, just mayo, no slaw. Hot damn! read more

I visited Ruben's on a Monday afternoon (my birthday, in fact!), looking for something to fill my gullet after a long drive. I was starting to get cranky, and Ruben's was exactly what I needed. My boo and I sat at the bar and started studying the menu. I had lots of questions (like, what the heck is a chuckwagon sandwich?!) for our very friendly waitress, but ultimately decided on the BBQ plate, which has BBQ pork, french fries, big ol' slices of tomato, coleslaw, and two hot buns. I ended piling everything but the slaw on the buns and having little sandwiches. Now, I don't want to say the food was amazing, because it wasn't. But it hit the spot. It was like one of those cafeteria lunches that you can't help but love. My husband said his egg, tomato and cheese sandwich was perfect. I liked that it was served wrapped in paper, without a plate. But here's the best part: before tip, and with some big Styrofoam cups of water, our meal came to just over 5 bucks. $5.00!!!! It was a very happy, budget-friendly birthday. read more

Great cheeseburger special. Rubens is always dependable. Owner or family is in the restaurant 98% of the time making sure everything is right. If you pay attention the cooking staff always wash their hands at the slightest chance of touching something unclean. Best service from waitresses, they are not assigned tables so anyone of them passing your table will stop and check if you need anything. read more

Very pleasant service. Menu was surprisingly limited for a diner. Very basic cheese meat omelette was the only omelette offering. We were looking for local specialties. They did have biscuits and gravy and country ham. The ham was delicious. The gravy was especially tasty too. Don't look for real butter though. Only "tastes like butter spread" was available. Service was very slow but fine for a leisurely weekend breakfast. I wouldn't recommend this stop if you are anxious to make time while traveling; otherwise a nice place to eat. read more

Mom & Pop family-style restaurant, I wanted to like it. Kitchen in center of restaurant with counter seating and booths around the parameter. Cool. Hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries on the menu. I ordered the BBQ Lunch Platter. The BBQ more like canned Sloppy Joe than you might expect, disappointing. I wanted better. Sides were OK, Coleslaw was good. Owner must be a Dallas Cowboys fan, be careful eating here during football season. read more

Cute mom and pop hamburger type of restaurant. This is a great place for a low budget meal...most of the food is frozen but still good. I like the chicken wings (they have a little bite to them) and mozzarella sticks are great..also their hot hamburger is pretty good. The staff is friendly and the restaurant clean. I LOVE diners and because I live near Baltimore, we have a ton of them in the area. I was delighted, however, in my last visit to my hometown to discover Ruben's. What a fantastic breakfast diner. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The hash browns were some of the best I've had. The bacon was cooked crispy just as I requested. And the service! It was off the hook. With this visit, Rubens became my goto breakfast diner joint when I return home. HIGHLY recommended. read more

I used to like the food, until i worked there and realized they hold the burgers in a plastic tub on a shelf at room temp by the cooks feet, uncovered, and the cooks never seem to wash their hands. If it not being up to code doesn't bother you...the food is half decent. Basic, gas station style hotdogs. Frozen everything. Powdered gravy. Nothing fancy, for sure. read more

I grew up in this neck of the woods, but I've been gone at least 15 plus years now. Coming back to the area around this past holiday season to visit family I see many things have changed and have moved on or completely gone. This fine establishment though is not one of them thank goodness! I took my wife and son here for lunch, and it was such a happy experience indeed. Just how I remembered the place. Full of locals all piling in for their lunchtime hankerings of hamburgers, hot dogs, fries...you name it. I'm happy to see Ruben's is still doing very well in tough economic times and in a particularly tough hit part of Virginia too. It's a testament that people are still coming here for great comfort food and it's still very well priced (at least to my outside eyes now). I think we were the only family in there all the waitresses didn't know as they all chatted up with everyone who came in the door, but that wasn't a problem for us and soon enough we all felt "accepted" and all of them doted on my son munching away on his fries. I read the Yelp review below mine and it's so true that it gave me a good laugh. Yes I remember the Bob Seger on the jukebox when I was growing up here too, ha ha. Wasn't playing today though but that's alright. One of these days when I come back again I gotta try the BBQ sandwich per their recommendation. I just get stuck on the nostalgia of enjoying my classic Ruben's cheeseburger "all the way", fries and sweet tea... I just can't think of anything else to get here when I walk through the door. But that's what great comfort food is isn't it? Comforting to know you always have that special something there you crave and you don't need to think about it, or even look at a menu.
