I sat at the counter behind Kelly, the woman who I suspect is the owner but was running that grill like a well oiled machine. She works on a 3 ft grill and to do that you have to be organized and fast. She was exactly that. The diner itself is old school, homey, the epitomy of comfort. Tin walls, pictures of family and staff scattered about, and a sign that says "We can't direct the wind, we can adjust the sails" words of wisdom. Regulars come in are greeted by name, and have their custom orders. You can see the lasting impact this place has had on the community. Before long, Kelly herself put my two eggs and sausage plate in front of me. She takes a lot of pride in her work and she should. The potatoes were seasoned well, a good mix of crunchy bits and softer pieces. The eggs were textbook over easy. Couldn't have asked for a better breakfast. I saw a few other items on their menu I want to try, and this diner is a convenient spot between where I live in Johnston and where I work in East Greenwich. I look forward to stopping in again and paying Kelly another visit.

We came in at about 11:10 am as they were probably at about 2/3 capacity the last hour before shutting down for their 2 week vacation period. It took some time to get our breakfast once the order was placed but not an unreasonable amount of time. Plus the atmosphere was relaxing. We sat at the counter as all the booths were full. And I have to admit, eating at the countertop was relaxing. I ordered the JD muffin which is a grilled English muffin with bacon and fried egg for ~$5.95. The outside of the muffin was soft compared to the crisp inside. It was deliciously tasteful with crispy grilled bacon and egg. Much more tasteful than those egg muffins that one can purchase elsewhere at those widespread coffee shops. My partner had a #7 with a side of bacon including 2 eggs scrambled, 2 bacon slices, home fries, 2 pieces of toast and 2 thick tasty plain pancakes of which I had one. I don't usually have plain pancakes but these were very tasty and fluffy. Both of our coffees, hot and iced, came with free refills. We wished the staff a great vacation and left, knowing that this is our new "goto" breakfast restaurant.

I love that they change their seasonal menu and decor throughout the year. It keeps every visit feeling fresh and fun. The staff is one of the best parts of the experience. They're friendly, genuine and honest. They recognized us when we walked in, remembered their regular customers by name and even knew many of their usual orders. That level of service is so impressive and really makes you feel welcome. I stuck with my tried-and-true favorite, the gluten-free Johnnycake with sausage, poached eggs and hollandaise. It was just as delicious as I remembered. Once again the portions were generous enough for leftovers. This time I also tried the gluten-free cinnamon roll with butter. Flavorful and delicious! (And yes, butter really does make everything better! ) I'll continue to rave about Mae's Place and can't wait to come back to try one of the gluten-free bagels or wraps next. When they remodeled they added a small bar to the back area if you prefer counter seating. They offer a variety of mimosa flavors at breakfast and beer and wine at lunch. Although I suppose if you want a beer with your eggs, have at it. The front and side walls have large windows making the interior bright. They offer so many specials. Check out all the white boards on the back wall above the counter seating. These are in addition to their standard menu. Breakfast items include egg based meals (eggs & bacon & toast for ex.), pancakes, hash and lots of al la carte sides. Coffee is good and comes with free refills.
