Malu is a super cute and uberly pink shop that serves Taiyaki desserts (like Somisomi), shaved ice and other desserts. They also make kimbap which I thought was kind of random. And I believe they are started to serve other food items & plate lunches which I have yet to try. Located in the Samsung Plaza, this place is small. So if it's busy then you can't really sit in there but I've never had a problem yet. It is Japanese owned although at first I thought it was Korean. You'll notice when entering, literally everything is pink.. even the ac! I have gone here several times and always end up ordering their Taiyaki with soft serve. I really love Somisomi but I almost think Malu might be a little better. Their taiyaki is freshly made and tastes like something you would get in Japan. They only have chocolate, vanilla or twist soft serve so they are limited on flavors. You get a choice of one topping for free but just realized that I should have checked in on Yelp for an extra free topping!! My fav combo has been the twist with matcha chocolate syrup and Taiyaki with Nutella. So good together! They also make cakes that you can order but I haven't tried it yet. I'm curious to know what it tastes like before I order a whole cake.. but unfortunately they don't have any individual pieces of cakes. I've also tried the kimbap which was good but nothing special. I haven't wanted to write a review about a place so badly! This little dessert cafe is so cute. And the owner chef person is so nice. They have excellent taste in music and I love the ambiance (though I don't think they are allowing dine in at this time). They also serve more than just desserts as they have kimbap and some savory taiyaki (both of which I have to come back to try). On this first visit, I was really drawn in by the Japanese Mont Blanc [$5.75] and the limited "shock drop" matcha cream puff [$5.75] (which had a layer of cream cheese and yuzu jam). Both were amazing! Perfectly balanced, light, beautiful textures. The Mont Blanc was so smooth and luscious while also being light. The delicate crust and crunchy cookie on top were nice touches. The cream puff was THE BEST CREAM PUFF IVE EVER HAD. The cookie crumble on top was still crisp, the profiterole was light and beautiful (definitely not cardboardy like some others I've had). Oh my Goddddd. I went with my sis Agnes S. Today and we had a complete party in our mouths eating this stuff. Honestly what the heck The Lychee tart was rich, crust was just the right amount of flakiness - yet the lychee and raspberry tasted so fresh and added an extreme burst of flavor into every bite. Definitely super impressed - I also just love sweets a ton LOL The Raspberry cheesecake was so good. I'm honestly craving these sweets again as I'm typing this. My friends and I stopped here for dessert. It seems like a new shop. Shop was colorful and very pink. We ordered the swirl with matcha/chocolate topping (free) and strawberry topping (check in on yelp) with taiyaki. Ice cream was soft and good. The topping was sweet but went well with the ice cream. I love this place! It's so cute and pink! The soft serve ice cream was really good, but the star of this place was the cream puff we had. My daughter ended up taking my cream puffs so I had to get another one lol. There is a few tables to sit here, but it's not a big place. For the parking lot, please make sure you bring cash. The service was really good, the gentleman was by himself working and was apologetic about us having to wait (which I was fine with lol). He was super kind and you could see how passionate he was about Malu. Whenever he wasn't attending to customers, he was working constantly on his feet with a smile. I visited Malu on a weeknight. It was empty, but the Samsung parking lot was full--we got the last stall. Malu offers a variety of desserts, from cakes to soft serve to shave ice. They even have kimbap... I know, not a dessert, but they offer it! I ordered the lilikoi mango shave ice and my friend got the soft serve. It was a little pricey, like $5-$6. But I guess that's kind of the going rate for ice cream if you go to an ice cream place for dessert. My shave ice was good. It comes with this lilikoi foam that's really tart and delicious. I wasn't really a fan of the popping boba on the bottom. I wish the description of the dessert had said it came with popping boba. Other than that, it was good. The guy working the cash register didn't really speak English very well, so you just have to be patient. The decor is very cute and PINK. There are a few small tables. The desert here is incredible. The soft serve chocolate topping is a mix of chocolate from France that he makes there and is SO GOOD. And the azuki bean topping is a special azuki bean flown in from Hokaido and it's SOOOO GOOD. The strawberries inside the roll cake i ate were so sweet and amazing and not mushy they were perfectly shaped and just perfect. My daughter opted for a green tea jelly drink and it was very good. I could totally taste the matcha which I didn't expect. We also had the taiyaki soft serve. Obviously super cute and instragrammable. Super friendly staff. Cash only as of right now. Strawberry jelly + milk drink - Perfect for kids. No caffeine and the strawberry milkiness is sure to please. My niece devoured it. Strawberry shave ice - Surprisingly delicious! The ice on the bottom is super soft like snow and the strawberry foam on top is strangely addicting. It's sweet and tart at the same time. Super refreshing and definitely different. Malu just opened Sunday 8/11/19 and I've tried coming on Thursday 8/15/19 after dinner but didn't know that Malu closed this past Thursday. I made another attempt today and Malu was opened! I found out today they will be closed on Mondays instead of Thursdays. They are still figuring out what days/hours work best for the business but will at least open from 11am-10pm. Last night they opened til 2am so customers can come for desserts after having drinks at the nearby bar. I wanted to try everything and I almost did! Spent just over $30!! Just to know that they do not accept credit cards so bring enough cash. Good thing I had enough cash and perhaps later they will take charge cards. The coffee jelly drink was pretty good and not too weak but wished the cup had a little more coffee jelly :) The Mango/Lilikoi shaved iced was delicious and refreshing that made me desire more of it! Too bad they didn't offer a larger size! It was in a cute & small dessert cup. After the shaved ice was delivered to my table, it was topped off with a Mango/Lilikoi foam which tasted like a Mango/Lilikoi mousse. It had a slice of orange and some a Lilikoi seeds on the delicious Mango /Lilikoi shaved ice. I added on the taiyaki (filled waffle fish). It was hot and cooked to a nice golden brown color with a generous amount of red bean! It was good but I'm still biased to the vendor at Ala Moana since it had a thicker Mochi waffle batter and I started to prefer it filled with Nutella! There are three different Kimbap (sushi ), soft serve, crepe cakes, taiyaki, dorayaki sandwiches, several different jelly drinks and I just saw on their Instagram page that they will offer cream puffs too! I took home the dorayaki and the two crepe cake with eyes (chocolate mousse and a rare cream cheese w/ perhaps a yuzu? ) I know it was cool/cold to the touch that perhaps it was chilled or the inside was frozen. I had it in the to go container but didn't go home right away... so when I arrived home the crepe cake was flatten like a melted Frosty the Snowman. I tossed it in the freezer to harden it and hope it would taste just as good but flattened. So perhaps if you do get one, it'll be best to eat it right away:). The dorayaki sandwich was still intact, but ate it after I've chilled it a bit in the freezer. It was delicious! It's like eating an azuki flavored cream filling between two mini Japanese honey pancakes. I haven't tried the hot dog sushi I bought, but I took the girl's (one of the owners) suggestion. It was her favorite of the three Sushi. It's a cute pink shop with three table of 4 and 4 high stool along the counter. It's a Japanese company with Korean style food/desserts. It's located in the Sam Sung Plaza across Walmart. As you enter the parking lot, it's on the left across Sikdorak. This is another cute trendy ice cream place in Honolulu and the prices reflect that. Amazing atmosphere with modern interpretation of traditional desserts. The soft serve menu is pretty straightforward and simple since you start off with vanilla ice cream as a base and choice any topping or sauce on it. Their soft serve is high in quality, creamy yet solid consistency. I tried out with Oreo flavor, hard chocolate cover with some matcha flavor in it, and strawberry sauce so far. Everything was deliciously good! It's a pretty small dessert shop but such a cute pink interior design and there are some seating especially outside too. I had here several times for kimbap and some dessert drinks but had yet to try other dessert items. A few weeks ago, I needed to grab some yummy dessert for friends, and I was totally desperate. I called Malu and the patissier was able to give me a few options that he could offer within the short time frame I had. I ended up ordering the nama choco cakes and they were a hit! Small, delicate but rich in flavor. Since this time, I knew I had to come back for my own treat - a weekly special dessert. This week's (week of Aug 16th) is the matcha green tea basque cheesecake slice. Yes, it's a tiny slice but it totally melted in my mouth, bursting with flavor! It was just enough of some creamy goodness. The added salt on the side was surprisingly delicious! On top of that I ordered a weekly special roll cake for my family. This same week's was a lemon flavor with maple sauce on the side. Again, a petite dessert but it totally exceeded my expectations! I honestly felt it was perfectly petite. I love French and Japanese desserts, and it's not easy to find a good place on island. Many cake places just have loads of sugar and cream in them, or just prioritize aesthetics (wedding or birthday cakes) instead of flavor. Every week I love picking up 4 pieces of nama chocolate slices for the family! They have a delicious Kim bag too which is aesthetically pleasing to look at when received. I ordered a face cake for my husbands 30th birthday, and super satisfied with what we got! Initially just went there because I don't know of any other place that makes anything like it and they only needed a weeks advance notice, but omg, The cake looks so much like him, it was hilarious! But not only that the cake was 100% delicious. There face cakes only come in strawberry shortcake, it's sort of Japanese-style with how light it is, no sugary frosting! Hole in the wall Japanese dessert shop tucked in the little strip with a couple of restaurants and bubble tea shops. I've tried a couple of their desserts and think they're overpriced for the quality (read: average). These are Japanese style desserts so the good news is they are lighter and less sweet than your typical dessert shops. The bad news is some seemingly interesting options are not, the chestnut cake for example is just a dense piece of sweet cake without much flavor. The only thing worth mentioning is the chiffon matcha cake in a cup, it's light, has good matcha flavor, and not too sweet. The portion however does not justify the price. I also can't tell how fresh their desserts are. They have samples on display and take stuff out of the fridge when you buy. read more

Such a little hidden gem. Service is amazing, friendly and welcoming, makes you feel like you're family. The Kimbap is freshly made when we ordered. They were very filling and so tasty. I love that they are 'Japanese sweet' so you're never overpowered by sugar. The strawberry jelly drink was so refreshing, lightly sweet and rich. The strawberry is fresh and you can taste it. There's no artificial flavors. It adds a nice brightness when combined with the whole milk. Very well balanced so it's not overwhelmingly sweet so you can drink it without feeling tired of it. The soft serve with fresh strawberry topping was also amazing. Once again it's not too sweet. The soft serve was light and rich. The fresh strawberries are bright and add a little sweetness and brightness. The roll cakes were also so amazing. The cake is light and decadent. The owner was super nice and friendly, and the space is an IG-worthy pink grotto of sweets and savories. You have to try this place. Spicy tuna kimbap was so ono. Tamagoyaki is slightly sweet, filling is perfectly seasoned wrapped in a high quality rice and nori, and rainbow sesame seeds are a nice touch. 5 pcs Taiyaki mix and match for only $15 I wish we ordered 10! Spicy tuna melt one is the best, but the beef one is delicious too. Beef is like a bulgolgi so it's sweet and savory. The chocolate and custard were delicious, not overly sweet. The batter is a perfected recipe. The desserts here are better than those you find at high end restaurants. The nama-choco is a chocolate dream. The Mont Blanc is a creamy chestnut on top of one of the best butter crusts I've had. The cream puff has a crispy crunchy coating with a delicious filling that's not overly sweet and somehow doesn't explode like every other cream puff on the market. Royal milk tea macaron ($3.50)- 7/10 would probably not get again I was excited for this because I love milk tea, I love macarons, and it was my first time seeing a milk tea-flavored macaron. I was so confused while eating it because I didn't think it tasted at all like milk tea. To be fair, I don't think I've ever had royal milk tea. I kept thinking it tasted fruity. I learned afterward that the pastry chef uses Assam, Earl Grey, and orange marmalade for the ganache. I guess what I was tasting was citrus flavor from the Earl Grey and orange. I think my palate isn't refined enough to fully appreciate this... I think La Tour macarons are a little softer and airier. I like the texture of La Tour macarons more. Matcha canele ($4)- 6/10 would not get again This was my first canele so I did some research before purchasing and was expecting the exterior to be crunchy/crispy and the interior to be like custard or thick pastry creme. Been following them on IG and decided to stop today for the char siu pork bowl with a medium boiled egg. This dish was done to absolute perfection! Malu is a small shop next to the Samsung Building on Keeamoku. I love the color pink and I thought it was the cutest thing ever. They sell dessert, kimbap, homemade masks, shirts, and macaroons. My sister and I ordered the beef and tuna with cheese kimbap. It had colorful sesame seeds on top of it as well. A nice touch! I thought the kimbaps were tasty - a nice portion of rice, vegetables, and beef/tuna and cheese. I thought the tuna and cheese were a unique combination. I was pleasantly surprised how all the ingredients work together :) I'll stop by to try a dessert next time we're in the area. Very cute place! Free 30 min parking with validation. Gave us enough time to finish the soft serve. I had a vanilla pineapple (on special right now) swirl with li Hing topping. It was a light and refreshing taste! I loved it. You get one topping free with your soft serve. You can choose from vanilla or whatever's on special or "twist" which is swirled. The Li Hing isn't on the menu but they have it. For a dollar more, you can have taiyaki with your soft serve. Their kimbap was good as well. Once again, this place never disappoints! The owner/chef is just the nicest! Super helpful as well. Placed a request to make my daughters birthday cake. She's turned 12, and when the chef called he asked for specifications. It was cute he didn't know who straykids were lol I don't blame him i don't know much kpop either! But he requested if I could try to find cake toppers and he could print out photos. I was only able to find stickers and he made it work. As you can tell, check out the photo! So cute. My daughter loved it, her friends adored it as well! I ordered the chocolate flavored cake and added an extra 1.5 inch in height with circumference of 6 inches. I come here on a regular basis and everything is great! I have tried almost everything on the menu and I've never been disappointed. The Taiyaki with soft serve, banana bread w/ walnut, and sausage kimbab are my favorites. Along with their food and drinks, their customer service is excellent. The employees are always smiling and working hard! I believe her name is Alice, but she is so adorable and awesome! Overall, a cute little shop for any occasion. Malu is located inside Samsung plaza, across from the Walmart at Keeaumoku St. Inside store is all pink, tables, chairs and the wall. What a pretty store. There are plenty parking inside Samsung plaza. There were four kinds of cakes when I went Malu. I had Mont blanc cake and it was delicious. Right sweetness. My friend had a strawberry Mont Blanc cake which was special cake of the week. It was also tasty. I want to try chocolate cake next time. This cafe is very small. It accommodates 10people or less. But it's nice place to go after lunch or dinner if you want something sweet. read more

This place is a Gem in Ala Moana area. Had two kinds of Kimbap and both are very tasty. This cute little place has something for anytime you stop by. Kim app for lunch, sweets for after lunch, tea time and even after dinner dessert! And great thing is that they open till late! Make sure to try Dorayaki!!! read more

Cute (and very pink!) little shop that has a variety of both sweet and savory snacks. Stopped by since I was craving Japanese soft serve and got stumped with the number of sauces you can choose from. To make choosing even more difficult, they have a variety of kim bap (Korean inspired rice rolls) with creative fillings AND taiyaki (a Japanese sweet). Traditional taiyaki have adzuki bean filling but they got really creative and since it's almost St Paddy's, I decided to go with the pastrami & tomato. Yeah...kinda weird sounding but OMG! It was so good, I want more...like right now...hmm wonder if they do Door Dash *hint hint.* Anyway, to top it off, I overheard the owner(?)/operator/chef guy mention he works there 7 days a week. Cute idea. Japanese people do dessert best with not so sweet cakes. Had their soufflé cheesecake which is much better than uncle tetsu. They also do kimbap apparently but I didn't have that. The only thing was that it was blazing hot inside and their limited seating is super hard and uncomfortable. At least parking is easy but it's not free. The person working there was pretty friendly and solicitous. He made a passion fruit glacé and gave it to us to try. It was tasty. I think more comfortable places to get Japanese dessert. And if I want kimbap I'll just grab it to go from palama for $3-4. read more
