First off, I am a huge fan of Malta, the country! It's a historical paradise with the bluest of waters, amazing Mediterranean delicacies and people. Of course, I needed to stop by theeee Malta Coffee when I saw it on a Yelp map. Loved it here...cozy space with a good amount of seating and offerings (including sandwiches). Friendly staff member. I spent about two hours here as I took a work call. I enjoyed a matcha latte with a ricotta pastizzi. I had my fair share of pastizzis while in Malta and this one was slightly different (definitely costlier, ha, at $7.50) but also amazing in its own way and a lot cheaper than catching a flight! The picture doesn't do it justice but this flaky pastry looked like art and was filled to the brim. It was heated to warm perfection. It did come apart as I was eating it so a fork would have been helpful. The matcha had a strong flavor. This combo kept me pretty full until late afternoon. When I walked by here I was on my way to an appointment so I could not stop in and I already had grabbed a coffee. But on my way home from my appointment I was like no I need to stop in here and check out the vibe and why not grabbed another coffee. The place is very cozy feeling and makes you feel like you are in Malta. I have never been myself but I get that feeling from walking around in here and the name itself. The barista was apologetic that I had been waiting for a tad bit of time to place an order. I got a regular Iced cappuccino and it was tasty. I highly recommend checking this place out. read more

I was very impressed when I walked into the new Malta Coffee cafe that recently opened on Lexington Avenue. The interior of the cafe feels like it's been in business for years with comfortable chairs and it felt both cozy and welcoming and not surprisingly, every seat was oc. I went in here for three reasons: coffee, food, and internet. Two out of three were horrible. The coffee here is a good and there's a reasonably pleasant atmosphere. If you just want coffee and a place to read a book it would be okay. Now for the bad: There is nothing decent to eat here. It's another "twenty ways to fill people up on white flour, white sugar, and air" place. Not a single thing with any real food in it. Why not make something with nuts, fruits, whole grains? Of course not: those things actually cost something. You make more profit by charging a lot of money for white flour, white sugar, and air. Meanwhile: my cortado and cookie (a very dry, undistinguished coconut macaroon--the only thing they seem to have with some semblance of anything other than flour and sugar) come to $7.something. I give a $20. "Sorry I don't have any coins" so she just rounds up in HER favor not giving 38 cents that should have been part of my change. Really professional! But all of this is typical of a NY cafe. I'm writing this because this place is guilty of the one unforgivable sin: pretending to have internet access and NOT really having internet access. They have some weak access which permits us to use google and a few sites but nothing else. Youtube was available for some reason. The New York Times wasn't. Twitter wasn't. Not a single site with useful information. "Can't connect". I asked the people working and got the same nonchalant "I don't know" attitude with which they just didn't give me my full change. The barista was super sweet and could tell she really cared about the business. I came in on a Monday morning and ordered a honey matcha and a pistachio croissant which I found out they make in the mornings. It was delicious. I highly recommend this cute local cafe and support local businesses. Much better experience than big chains and very homey. read more

I had an absolutely terrible experience here. I came in to get a coffee and get some work done. When I entered, no one was behind the counter. I stood there for about 5 minutes before deciding to sit and get started on my work until the barista returned. I kept glancing back and forth toward the counter from my seat for about 20 minutes before just putting on my noise cancelling headphones and diving into my work, assuming that no one was coming anytime soon. When I look up 30 minutes later, the barista is standing over me, asking if I'm going to order anything. I was startled by his hostility but said of course and headed toward the counter, but he kept insisting that I was only doing so because I was prompted, implying that I came to the shop with the intention of not getting anything. Even after I stated my order, he continued to say that it had been such a long time that I sat there without ordering, making me extremely uncomfortable and completely ignoring my statement that he wasn't present for the first 20 minutes after I arrived and that I got swept up in my work. I am utterly shocked by the level of hostility of the barista and the way that I was treated. It was entirely unprofessional, and it was honestly very poor business acumen on behalf of the barista, who should have just let it go once I explained and went ahead with my order. If you respect yourself and appreciate kind baristas/staff, do not patronize this business. read more

Cute ambiance, service was good, food and coffee was ok. Place has a strange smell, which is off putting.

I think the ambiance is very nice however the pricing on two pastizzi cost me $16. Even for new york pricing $8 each for a tiny cafe pastry is pretty ridiculous. Be prepared to spend if you are coming here compared to other cafe pricing. read more
