We stopped for lunch on a Friday while passing through from KC to Springfield. They had a good size crowd but service was fast, friendly and efficient. We started with cheese curds that were good. Then mahi mahi sandwich and French dip special. The mahi was grilled nicely - flaky tender texture, not dried out. It came with a garlic aioli but was good in its own with grilled flavor and generous squeeze of lemon. The French dip had good quality meat and was better than average. We chose coleslaw for our sides. It was flavorful - a bit creamier and heavier dressed than our personal preference - but tasty. The rustic decor has charm and the currently displayed Christmas touches are festive and cute. We have driven by this place many times without stopping but that was a mistake! Wow! This is a blast from the past; a genuine roadhouse with huge servings of down-home cooked staples. I've hunted all my life, but the B&W hunting pics in Mallards take me back to the glory days of a bygone era. My Chicken Fried Pork Tenderloin was enormous, tender, and delicious! The Green Beans and Mashed Potato sides were also tasty. My wife loved her Chicken Sandwich, w side of Baked Beans. No room for dessert; I was barely able to waddle back outside to our jeep. The food is iffy once again. But I sweat. If the waitresses pull their leggings up their butts anymore they will be tasting it for days! I don't understand why they think it's work appropriate attire and why they think that it'll give them more tips. But it's outright ridiculous! I found this place a few months when I registered for the Historic Clinton 5k and Marathon. Then everything got postponed. Today I picked up my race packet and knew I would eat there. I had their catfish with hush puppies and French fries. Mini Molton Lava cake for desert. Mallard's is just as the other reviewers say. On the inside it's rustic (kind of like the restaurant on Meramac River near the caverns. Caverns. Besides the inside being beautifully rustic, the food was so good. I've eaten at a lot of places in MO. Especially around the Ozarks. I would put this in the top 10. The food was delicious. The service was dead on. The staff wore masks and are very aware of masks, distancing and things going on right now. I absolutely love this place and will return when I am in the area. read more

Green beans were very good. Bake potato was small and definitely not a baking potato. KC strip steak was thin with grilse and fat. The $45 porterhouse was thick, and it was a good steak. This place is fantastic. If you have the opportunity you should not pass by this place! Homemade food. The pork tenderloin sandwich was huge, hand breaded and fried to a thin and juicy perfection. So tasty. The prime rib sandwich was the daily special. Husband said the caramelized onions were so sweet and good. Came with a real horseradish sauce and au jus. Cheeseburger was a typical Cheeseburger- we however, are beef snobs- eating homegrown butchered beef on the daily so most restaurant beef doesn't impress us. The ranch dressing was the best the family has ever had. Customer service- excellent. Decor is rustic but clean and well maintained. Price is from $10 and up. Prime rib sandwich special was $11.99. While we're frequent visitors/part time residents in the area, we've only tried Mallards once. I really wanted to love this place, or at least like it more than a little based on the rave reviews I've heard from others. Unfortunately, we found it to be pretty mediocre. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. A ho-hum kind of meal that sufficed, but didn't impress. With the other local options, it's not real likely we'll spend the money to return for a "higher end' meal that really wasn't. We had four in our party. One Chicken fried Chicken. It was pretty standard. Again, not bad but nothing outstanding about it. One Brisket sandwich with beans and an add on charge for a second side, fries. As with the chicken, the brisket was ok, but nothing to get excited about. The beans were the best part of his meal. 3rd person had the KC Strip with mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans. The potatoes and gravy were very good. The steak would probably have been good had it been cooked to medium as ordered, but it was on the far side of medium well and just too overcooked. Our 4th ordered chicken strips. They were as the other meals.....not bad, but just nothing outstanding about them. Run of the mill, deep fried frozen chicken strips. The worst thing for us and the reason we aren't likely to give this place another shot is that our server was so rude and so non-attentive. She cut one person off in the middle of taking their order because someone walked in and was waving at her and she had to run over to greet them. lol FOR REAL. We tried several times to flag her down to let her know he steak was very overcooked, but she never responded. No one came back to check on us once the food was on the table. No drinks were refilled. Two of our party really wanted dessert, but after sitting there with napkins on top of plates, twiddling thumbs and very obviously signaling we were ready for our table to be cleared and perhaps order dessert, nobody came. We paid for our meal and left, leaving behind a tip commiserate to the service provided. The really upsetting part was that this was a birthday celebration dinner for one of our party who doesn't get to get out and go to a restaurant often. This restaurant was chosen by the birthday person as a special treat that ultimately resulted in a less than special meal. :( read more

Yum is the best way to describe the burgers here! I had the bbq bacon cheeseburger which consisted of goodly sized patty cooked to perfection and dripping with tangy bbq sauce and melty cheese galore. The bacon was nice and smoky and overall the burger was substantial. The fries were seasoned well but not overly so. Cheese curds were pretty good as well. A similar place could open up with the same mediocre food and reasonable prices and this place would be gone in a couple years. The portions get smaller every time I go in until it just wasn't worth it anymore. The front entrance smells like urine and vomit no matter what time of day you visit.
