Malesherbes is a quaint French restaurant with only enough space to serve ~20 dinner guests every evening. I strongly advise making a reservation and looking forward to a slow, flavorful meal. It is an intimate restaurant in a tiny alley and the staff are very sweet. We actually bumped into the chef and our server at a bar the next day and they recognized us and chatted with us! Water is NOT free, which is the rule in Brugge.
We had:
- Fish soup, please do yourself a favour and get this! I tried five different fish soups in various well-reviewed Belgian restaurants and none could match the flavor and richness of Malesherbes' fish soup. If I could go back, I would order three fish soups and call it dinner. I still think about that fish soup. I'll probably think about that fish soup on my deathbed, wondering "What if....what if I had ordered three of them that night?"
- Foie gras roasted with apples. Soooo good. Foie gras is usually amazing, the fact the apples were roasted with it mean they were sweet and covered in delicious foie gras oils. The only negative about this dish is that it got very heavy after a while, it would be so much better if they served it with a small salad on the side.
- Duck leg with sausage. The duck leg was flavorful and tender, I wish there were two of these! The sausage is the same Belgian herb sausage I've had a dozen times at other places (including our hotel breakfast). Tasty, but not something I want at the price range of this dish.
- Apple tartin. This was very tasty. I will say, the States and Canada has amazing apple pie and this tartin didn't crack my top 10.
I would really recommend visiting Malesherbes for a very Brugge/French experience. Get a nice glass of the house red (so very drinkable) and end the night was a dessert wine. read more
