Good food and a charming local atmosphere. Try the Flemish stew and/or the puff pastry with ice cream.

    Waterzooi

Found this place via TasteAtlas, a site which recommends the best places to try local delicacies. The wife and I went here to try their Waterzooi. It's a creamy chicken soup. Flemish speciality. Unlike some of the other reviews on Yelp!, we didn't really have an issue with service or waitstaff related issues. The Waterzooi came in a big pot, and was spooned into our bowls. The pot stays at your table for you to finish. There was a good amount of chicken it it, two breasts and two legs, potatoes and carrots. We both ate our fill. It did kind of remind me of Campbell's Cream of Chicken Soup though in is flavor. Was good to have on a chilly, wet, November day. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to try the soup and wants to get their fill. Though I have to admit, there wasn't anything spectacular about it.

    Flemish beef stew

For our first meal in Ghent, we went for some simple and traditional food. I had the Flemish beef stew (carbonnade) and my wife had the waterzooi (chicken soup). We were both very happy with our dishes. Both of these dishes tasted very familiar. The beef stew was more or less like american pot roast, while the chicken one was somewhat like chicken fricasee. Of course, frites on the side and a westmalle tripel.

My favorite place in Ghent. I think the Flemish stew is second to none. I go here at least once every time I come to Ghent.

Wow! This is probably one of my favorite meals on the trip. Definitely top three for sure! We were…read morerecommended to come here by the staff of our hotel and I'm definitely glad we did. They specialize in traditional Belgian dishes, such as Beef Stew. We were looking for something local and authentic like this! We did find a reservation day of and were able to book it. The food was amazing. I loved the meatballs appetizer and beef stew! So good. They had a cute little outside deck area, which was super nice to eat out on in the great weather. If you can get a reservation here, I highly recommend a come!

This place seemed very cozy and fancy, with candles on tables and fairy lights, and people seemed to be having a great time. Moreover, it served a traditional Flemish beef stew, so I walked right on in! Fortunately, they were able to squeeze me in for an hour. I ordered the Flemish beef stew, which had around 6-8 chunks of beef and a small dill-flavoured side salad. It also came with a plate of fries - and when offered the mayo, I instantly accepted to try things the "Belgian" way. The stew was good at first bite, but I grew tired of it halfway through. It was very salty and strong of acidic red wine, and some of the beef chunks were still tough and under braised. The fries were a bit soggy and too thin to be considered typically Belgian fries. For 30 EUR, it was slightly disappointing... but it appears most things in Ghent are quite expensive. The servers there are quite young but very kind and welcoming. I had no issues with the service. What irked me the most was the water situation. I felt pressured to order something, so asked for water. Out came a 20mL glass bottle - just enough for 4 sips of water - and they charged me a whopping 3.5 EUR for this tiny baby. Unbelievable... left a bad taste in my mouth.
