This Dominican restaurant claims to be the King of Roast Chicken. Dozens of chickens glisten in the rotisserie in front of the restaurant. Just about every party there had an order of roast chicken. I ordered the wrong thing because I was in the mood for fish. I opted for the sliced salmon ($12) which comes with one of the following: rice & beans, plantains, salad or French fries. Portions are generous. Expect to pay about $12 per entree but an entree can and should feed at least two people. In fact, you should dine family style. * Salmon slice - a thin slice of salmon steak with some steamed broccoli. They left the bones in. The salmon seemed to be pan fried and it rested in a pool of butter sauce. It was extremely salty. I could only eat a tiny bit. Good broccoli though. * Salad - a bit odd - huge portion of shredded lettuce, avocado, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and corn. No dressing was provided. Hmm. They had oil and vinegar at the table though. It seems like it's best to stick with the chicken though they also have steak, lobster tail, pasta, mofongos, paella (arroces), and soupy rice (asopado). I had a bite of the tomato-based paella and was not impressed as it seemed one dimensional and flat. It's a casual place with a diner like atmosphere. It seems popular with families. I sent my daughter in to buy a lunch of rice beans and chicken. She came out with a half a chicken with rice and beans for $12. They told her they didn't do chicken lunch. I took the order and went back in because I thought it had to be a mistake. The manager told me the same thing they no longer do lunches for rotisserie chicken. I found this very odd since all Spanish places do chicken lunches. After going back and forth with him for a few minutes I changed my lunch to beef, rice and beans for $8.75 and a passion fruit juice for $4.75. In most spanish restaurants in the heights, any lunch is anywhere from $5.50-$6.75 and juices under $4. The staff and manager rush service because they do get a lot of business, but should slow down and treat customers better. 3 stars because they do have good food, but will be going to one of many other spanish places around the area next time. read more

The skewered chickens in the window rolling by in the ferris wheel like roaster sleeves will beckon you inside against your will. Everything else is still good but a notch or so down. Go for the daily specials or combination platters. Caution: You will get a whole lot of food. I mean a crazy huge portion. Split a dish or bring home. An entree will feed a small family. Their chicken is finger licking delicious. Arrived on a Saturday Afternoon and had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated, bread was put on the table promptly. We had to ask for water and flag a waiter to come over, it was a bit packed i might add. Ordered half a chicken with Tostones, red snapper with rice and beans and a heineken which was served with lemons? The fish tasted just ok, like farmed fish but it was not bad. The rice was good and the beans excellent. Now the chicken is their forte, you smell it a mile away from their rest. I always go and get the chicken because of that. Really good Dominican food. Huge quantity and SABOR! Got the BBQ chicken, bistec encebollado, & carne de cerdo. Chicken, beef, and shredded pork. MMM! Everything was delicious. The chicken was definitely the favorite. It was juicy and crispy on the outside. However, I've definitely had better charcoal chicken elsewhere in terms of flavor. The rub just did not penetrate into the flesh. Perhaps the type of chicken used? The shredded pork was probably my favorite. Spices used were outstanding and just perfectly salted. Omg! I love them, I normally come for regular chicken fish dishes but this afternoon I was craving mangú and was very pleased. At 1pm in the afternoon El Malecon had mangú with the onions. May God bless this place I hate to come to a Latin restaurant on a Sunday and a popular dish is unavailable at 12 noon. So if you are familiar....then you know you can smell this places rotisserie chicken miles away whether walking in the neighborhood or riding the 1 train. 80% of the time the seasoning is on fleek as the kids say and the rotisserie is moist. And because they are high volume you can usually count on fresh rotisserie at the least. And the oxtails should be given equal praise and can't be sneezed at. Now the staff service leaves much to be desired and the pricing for a local Spanish spot is a little pricey. But all that aside the food in general is on point and well worth the cons most days. read more

This would've gotten a better rating if the staff was more knowledgeable on their policies. I was told I can't order food for delivery because I was too far, mind you I'm only a 9 minute drive in the northern part of the Bronx, bordering Yonkers. Malecon (the lady I was speaking to representing the buisness) doesn't seem to know how far they can deliver too but just strays away from delivering to the Bronx. When I asked about the delivery policies she replied I don't know I just work here. I only order pick up orders so can't attest to the service in the restaurant. The food is always delicious. Our fave is the rotisserie chicken combo. It's a bit pricier than a lot of Dominican restaurants in the area but the quality of the food and amount of food you get in the combo is worth it. Plus that chicken is super delicious. Their pińa colada is also pretty bomb as well. It's definitely our go to place. Pro tip: when placing s phone order for pick up speak slow and loud. I was here with my goddaughter on Thursday 10/19/2017 around 6:30 to 6:45, we left at 7:30 I think our wartiest was a morenita Dominican women. I'm Dominican as well not a race issues on my part, i felt it on her end as I'm usually confused for a not Hispanic which is fine. She was rude came over to us 2x once to take our order and the 2nd after I got up to get my own water refill, lemon and strew. She came over and ask if we need something with a fake smile which made the mood even worst. She was so rude I did not even bother to eat my food since I was trying not to make a scene. I haven't eaten at this establishment but I recently placed in order for some one and ordered some soup/Sancocho. They were on top of getting the order prepared and ready for my pickup. Pickup was quick and easy.... Parking can be a challenge, they are located on Broadway in the heart of Riverdale. I dig the food, why else go? However, there have been one too many occasions where staff have been rude, ignoring us, and we can't help but notice it does not happen to the racially Black folks who speak Spanish (yes the Afr@Latin@s who do go are serviced and greeted well). It's like we get ignored because we do not order in Spanish (which I speak as an AfraLatina, but choose not to if I am with friends who do not). I have very different interactions when I'm with my Latin@ friends. Examples are: waiting way too long to be served, not being offered water, not being given utensils, not being given additional plates when food arrives (as if we are to eat off of the same plate with our fingers!) We often order the whole chicken with rice and beans and plantains. All are good. We once ordered the yuca and it was boiled and not fried, keep this in mind if you want the yuca cooked a certain way. I have not had the desserts and that's mainly because I don't want to spend $4 on a slice of tres leche cake. The place is often clean, but if you go on a busy day/time you may have to wait a while for a table to be cleaned or for water to be brought to you. The bathrooms are single-stall and gendered. At the end of the day when we are considering where to go on 231st street and El Malecon comes up as an option, we have to ask ourselves: "Do we feel like dealing with the anti-Black racism of that establishment today?" Have the roasted chicken with some rice and beans and maduros (sweet plantains) or tostones (fried green plantains) or mofongo (smashed up green plantains)... and you'll always be a winner. And don't be too prissy either and eat the skin.. it's really the most delicious part. Yummy in my tummy. And keep in mind that Latinos don't do salad dressing... we're oil & vinegar people. I prefer to order to avoid OFFENDING the staff with a simple request like a missing fork with my steak or correcting my order when I ask for a Diet Pepsi instead of a regular Pepsi. I am around Washington Heights frequently and when I have time to have a delicious Dominican lunch this is the place I think about. I had tried their fish dishes and they were done well, the rice was the right consistency and flavor and the red beans had well balance flavor. I like mofongo, so far this is the best I had tried in a restaurant. They make mix drinks which I have not tried but their sangria is great . I ordered the vinaigrette salsa which was ok. The octopus was very tough. Also was a small portion and cost $12. My wife ordered $17 Salsa Vere shrimp which consisted of 6 small pieces of shrimp poorly presented in a watery salsa verde sauce. We agreed never to order fish here again. The half-chicken with white rice and black beans is my go-to meal for 2 along with a salad. The food is always good and worth the price tag. Currently under $20 for this entire meal. Enjoying the sub-optimal service is the problem. When the waitress/waiter realizes that they have to scratch off the salad they forgot to bring and then don't recognize their forgetfulness or apologize for it, that is a problem. If it's just the meal that's needed, don't expect extraordinary service. I will stick to Malecon on 175th and Broadway where they are a bit more conscience of the customers. read more
