Hey, El Malecon, why did you give me an edible, overly dried out chicken with my $25 take-out dinner? Even the chicken thigh was dried out and inedible. Your rice used to be my favorite. How could you make that tasteless? That $25 dinner with rice, beans, plantains, salad and chicken used to be a deal. It's not a bargain anymore if all that is okay is the salad with wet lettuce and some of the plantains maduros. There's not much that aggravates me as much as mediocre food. The food is good the service not so much. It does get very crowded especially during the weekends. My favorite here is the Pork Mofongo which is very yummy. The churrasco is decent. I gave it three stars because of the service. read more

As a vegan (or vegetarian) options are pretty limited to the sides. My friend and I shared sides of yellow rice, beans, steamed vegetables, yucca and plantains. The rice and beans were hardy and tasty, the plantains were amazingly sweet and mushy. The steamed vegetables were barely cooked and had no real taste and the yucca was so tough and starchy we had trouble eating it and gave up. On the other hand, the mango juice is wonderful. The total cost was around $30 which is good for a dinner but pricey considering we got only sides. read more

This Dominican restaurant is right under the 1,9 train at the 231st Street Station. I have basically tried everything on the menu. Their chicken is very very good as is their Bistec. It can get crowded at times and service can be spotty every now and then but it definitely will not disappoint. El Malecon is the go-to place when you don't wanna cook and want your food delivered quickly. I like the chicken although it has been a little on the dry side a few times, their rice and beans is alright, but I haven't really tried anything else here. Not the best, not the worst ... But perfect when I don't want to cook or break the bank. The chicken's almost always on point, while I'm never disappointed by the morro, tostones, or maduros. The service is usually decent -- but one bad service won't keep me from going. $13 gets you a whole roasted chicken w/ one side ... And for an additional $6 or so, you can have another side or two. The food here is okay. The decor is nice and the waiters are very attentive. The only thing is that they serve dry toasted bread. Also, their beef stew is rip off. Normally in bed stew you are supposed to have chunks of meet in the stew, but in this place they serve you thin slices of beef in your stew. For my six year old I ince ordered scrambled eggs with Swiss cheese and it was so greasy and soggy and green...yuck. read more

I love their roasted chicken, the best. I have yet to find another restaurant that can compare in terms of the chicken! However, their customer service sucks! There is a guy that always responds to phone calls and he is beyond rude. I've had several arguments with him because he claims he can never hear me due to the loud noise on his end. Even though we don't speak Spanish we had terrific help by the staff figuring out what to order. A nice treat was hot bread and cold water brought to us immediately when we sat down before we ordered. Very family friendly and super clean. We will definitely be back. I've been coming to this restaurant for over 10 years, food is delicious and hot, but the service continues to be horrendous. I visited this morning with my husband and young child. As I was seating myself, a server asked if I needed service for 2, I said yes. I made a mistake because I guess I did not count my baby, which needed a high chair. So as a result, the server had to go back and bring and extra set of utensils. She decided to let the entire staff know this as she was complaining about it out loud to the other servers. Very unprofessional! I never go here with the intention of getting great service, or even medium level service!! It's a shame that they have great food and have invested $$ in cosmetic upgrades to the decor, but they can't seem to improve their service. We love this place, its our thing we go here have sangria and do groceries nearby. Sadly yesterday was the first time we brought our kids along on a Saturday afternoon. We walk in, its busy but there is still a perfectly fine table that sits both of us and our 3 small kids. The waiter insist on us waiting for another table. So there we are standing with our starving, cranky small kids in the middle of this crowded restaurant, just because he wanted us to wait? Not cool... We crossed the streets and ate a El Economico, spent less money and ate delicious food. FYI humble yourself. I dont think we will be coming back. read more

Takeout chicken, rice & beans from here is always a good idea, especially after my son has built up a big appetite playing a late Little League game under the lights at nearby Cooney Grauer field. Recently, hHe and I sat down for a meal that included several dishes other than chicken. Even if the waitress did bring "fries" instead of "Sprite" the food was affordable and tasty and served unobtrusively. Location on 231st and Broadway: The food here used to be soo good always on point anything you ordered was fresh, flavorful and plentiful. NOT anymore it has been gradually getting worse, tasteless, smaller portions and the prices increasing what seems to be almost weekly! even the sandwiches have no taste. I continue to wait a period and give them another chance but each time my family and I have been disappointed. I have been visiting this restaurant and ordering for about 10 years and every time I order the same rude man answers the phone and insults me. This evening when I call to place an order for delivery I was speaking in a normal respectful tone. The manager says to me in this rude tone " Usted esta hablando calmada mente como si aquí no hubiera ruido" you are speaking in a normal tone of voice as if there isn't any noise here. I responded obviously if I'm not yelling is bc I don't hear any noise and I believe you can here me. I immediately asked to speak to the manager and he said he's speaking I automatically started to speak English bc it is my first language and I felt more confident and comfortable expressing myself. He replies "ohhh pero la muchachita se le olvido hablar español ahora" basically saying now u forgot to speak Spanish I ignored his rude remark and continued wlmy order. At the end of the altercation and his rude comments I asked him for my total he says 20 dollars. When I received my order the young man who delivered my food handed me a receipt a grand total of 20 dollars and $29 circled in the middle. I called the restaurant and spoke to the manager he told me he had not added the two Lemonade I also ordered, and continued to speak to me in a rude and obnoxious demeanor I refused to pay for the food and sent the man away wlmy apologies. Food prices are reasonable and portions are large. The roasted chicken is a specialty if you like overly seasoned and dry poultry meat. Personally I support most businesses in my neighborhood but prefer to go places where you time is appreciated. This is a hard pass for me. The food is delicious, the restaurant is decent but if you're ordering to take out be very careful with the parking. Traffic is very congested, you most probably would have to double park which is dangerous because it's a tight area with lots of people, train tracks above and traffic agents waiting to tag your vehicle if you dare leave it unattended double parked. When inside, male staff is usually upfront ready to take your order. However, male staff is constantly joking around and sexually harassing pretty female customers. These men are so desperate for attention that they get caught up sexually harassing woman and forget about all the other customers that are standing there witnessing their obnoxious behavior. If the woman doesn't reciprocate they will start making fun of her and laughing behind the counter to each others. If you don't speak Spanish to the staff they become rude and brush you off. In fact, if you call and don't speak quickly to them they will bluntly hand the phone up and make no excuses about it when asked. Where's the manager when you need one? It won't surprise me if one day they get hit with a sexual harassment lawsuit. Very uncomfortable! read more

Omg! What a nightmare. We were sat Ina corner and forgotten about. The food was way overpriced for rice and beans. I mean, come on, now. Let's keep it real , it's just rice and beans and some meat. Between fur of us for a plate of food each, plus one drink would have been close to hundred dollars. So we opted for sancocho soup and a mixed platter of chicken breast steak with onions and peppers. Wow! What an unappetizing bowl of soup. The soup s/b yuca, Potatoes, plantains, meat and chicken. Well, what we got was some liquid and the grossest looking chicken that we have ever seen. The poor chicken looked like it had been hacked to death haphazardly And thrown into the mix as. Filling. The chicken and steak platter looked like a wannabe Chinese fast food pepper steak platter.the waitress totally forgot about us. She kept taking stuff from our table to give to the other patrons, first our salt, then our oil vinegar!!! The manager was of no help and had no sympathy for us. This place for me is a hit or miss when it comes to good old Spanish food. The rotisserie chicken is either finger licking good and flavorful and the most delicious chicken you've ever had in your life or a little bland and flavorless. I've never stayed in the restaurant so I can't talk about the service. This is one of those places you order take out when you in the mood for some good rotisserie chicken unless it happens to be on of of those days where the chicken is left a little bland. I've ordered here many times, thankfully most of those times the food has been good but there are those days where it's just so-so (maybe on hectic days they season the chicken a little fast and don't let it roast on all sides throughly. The chicken is left with white floppy non-roasted skin on some sides and tasteless). After checking their NYC restaurant inspection report and seeing their good record I decided to place an order for delivery. It was late afternoon and I was very hungry and supposedly EVERYTHING tastes good when you are hungry. Wrong. I ordered the salmon fillet with beans and rice and plantains. The salmon was baked they said. Well it tasted like it was fried in some thick lard. It was very dry and didn't have have that juicy salmon flavor. No taste of salt or pepper or any type of seasoning. The beans were typically Dominican, having eaten homemade Dominican food on many occasions, very mild and lacking any distinctive rush of flavor. The plantains were enough to fill 3 people. All looked deep fried in oil that had been sitting for days. If you want flavorful Caribbean food try Trinidadian, Cuban or Jamaican. Is bad customer service a thing of New York? I can count on one hand the times we had great customer service in our one week stay. BUTTTT just for this time I am going to judge the food. It was our first time having DR food and we asked the waitress what she would recommend (wait the waitress was very nice, the one that was a tad jerky was the hostess, that sat us down and gave us the menus) she told us that the mofongo were delicious, so we ordered the Chicharron one, she told us the rotisserie chicken was their specialty with rice and habichuela , so we ordered half a chicken and we ordered an order of half plantains and half tostones. The mofongo was super dupper DELICOUS! I loved loved loved it... never had anything like it. I hope we have something here that taste like that did.
