I tried Mala town and it was different, you go to a restaurant and basically there is not a menu, you just have to choose and pick the main ingredients and quantity, at the end you pick the base broth from the screen behind the cashier and pay for the quantity just picked; When the food is cooked and ready the waitress brough me the dish, in this traditional pot and it was good; It is a very cool place to try, the flavor was very good, the ambience is cozy and you don't have much interactions with the staff, I guess it is a great place for introvert people to enjoy a good meal; I am going to be back soon read more

My friends and I each got different soup bases. The tomato soup base was flavorful and is my favorite. My brother got the spicy soup base, and he said it was delicious. I've heard a lot of hype regarding Malatown but never had the chance to go. My friend and I planned a dinner date for Wednesday at 5:30 PM. Thank god we came at the time we did because it was packed by the time it hit 5:45 PM. You grab a bowl and some tongs. It's buffet style in the sense that its like an assembly line or veggies, meats, and starch. You pick what you want and put it into the bowl and then you pick out your broth. I picked out sukiyaki and got an array of things. Spinach, mushrooms, wagyu beef, shitake mushrooms, fish balls, udon noodles, and probably much more haha. I had a little over 2 lbs of food in my bowl, they charge $16.99/lb. After tax, tip, and fees my meal came out to a little over $40. It is a great concept but is very expensive. This is an interesting concept. It's hot pot but instead of cooking it yourself, the staff takes your chosen food and cook it for you in your choice of broth. As soon as you walk in, grab a bowl and tongs. You then go to the buffet bar and pick out the food you want. The buffet bar ranges from noodles to tofu, shrimp, vegetables, various meats and pretty much what you would find in a typical hot pot buffet bar. You then choose a broth and pay for your food based on weight. After a few minutes, the staff brings your food, fully cooked in the broth you chose. My broth was the tom yum soup and it was very good. There was a lemongrass stalk in the broth which enhanced the aroma. I selected a few pieces of the sliced wagyu beef but it was quite tough. I ended up not eating the beef at all. I had a taste of the beef bone broth and it was very good too. This place has great broth and if I'm in a soup mood, I'd come here but the rest of the ingredients are typical. The ambience is very casual and simple, no decor or anything . read more

I go to this place a lot since they opened! Super good malatang and I'm so glad there is finally a place in Edison. This place is a pay your weight (at the moment is 15.99$ a pound) where you pick everything up from a buffet style area and then they cook it in the soup you like. I'm obSESSED with the Szechuan soup base. It's an extremely spicy soup base but it just hits differently!!! I tried the spicy stock soup base but it doesn't hit the right spots like the Szechuan one does. The selection is super big as welll! They have all the goodies that most places don't have like hotpot noodles, quail eggs, haidai miao (sometimes :(( ), and more! The service is always good and the place is cute. There is a self serve bar with sauces and drinks. The tea definitely helps a lot with spice, so if you don't want your nose running the whole time I recommend drinking copious amounts of the tea. I parking though is horrible. There is very little parking which I think is sad since on Saturdays and Fridays or just at night in general this place get pretty packed. read more

It definitely scratches a craving, especially when you don't want to shell out for the hotpot options around here which are now all AYCE. The only thing is that it gets REALLY crowded REALLY fast and there wasn't anything being done to battle the bottleneck. The other thing I found quite alarming is that there aren't separate tongs for each option. How do they ensure cross contamination, allergies, etc aren't being spread around? When a seat was available, I got my bowl and put in the items I wanted: Scallops Shrimp Spinach Corn Egg ramen chicken Rose blossom lemonade I weighed the items, and the broth I added was beef broth medium spice. They cooked it in the back. It came out in about 15 minutes. I tried the food and it was very good but super spicy. The drink took a while to come out, which was the only real issue. I also had the tirimisu, and that was frozen, but when it thawed out a bit, it was good! All in all I had a good experience! read more

Love this place so much!! It's a bit off the beaten path, past the H Mart complex. Drove past it a few times and finally decided to stop in. I am so glad we did because this place is really really good. You pick whatever ingredients you want, and there are so many options, protein, seafood, veggies, tofu, noodles, etc! Then you can pick the broth or do the dry pot for the ingredients to be cooked in. Take a seat and they will bring you the food in less than 5 minutes (seriously, how do they make it so fast!!??) I personally love the dry pot and the chicken broth. Also, the free iced tea is absolutely delicious, and perfect to offset the spices. There are many different options for base, whether you want a soup base or a dry pot. I opted for the dry pot because it's peanut flavored and you can adjust spice level. Went to have dinner here with our Catholic Nun Friend from the Sisters of Christian Charity North American Province. They have a unique way of choosing and picking the veggies, meat, seafood and other items by having all your items on a plastic bowl. They weigh in yours and tell the cashier the kind of soup you want for your hot pot. I ordered Seafood and Veggies Hot Pot on a Suki Yaki soup. It was served on a metal bowl, It's delicious. Serving Staff are friendly. Nicely decorated and well lighted hot pot spot. I should have given them 5 stars, but their bathrooms have no paper towel. This is a great concept for Ramen/hotpot place. When you first come in you will grab a bowl and tongs to grab your items for your hotpot. They have different variety s from meats, vegetables, seafood, and other items you put in for hotpot. Once you gather all the items that you want in your bowl then head to the cashier where they weigh your items and ask what broth you prefer. Don't worry they don't weigh the bowl. They assign you a table and bring out the bowl when its prepared. You can add rice for a dollar extra on the side. They have a drink station with lightly sweeten iced tea. It was pretty good tasting that was included. I chose the beef broth the first time here and it was spicy since I requested. I will try the dry one next time. The location has a few parking spots, but its a place to eat and go, not really and sit in restaurant where they have a server. This spot is a great change from the all you can eat places if you don't want a buffet. Sometimes you just want the portion size and nothing more. This is a definitely a place to try if you like hotpot and ramen. The only thing is the parking is limited so there is off street parking as well. read more

Happy Tuesday Adventurers! This place was really awesome. I've done a few hotspots prior to this but this was an experience. I loved that I could chose all the fixings for my own hotpot, especially with the huge variety of them. Parking wasn't bad though I imagine during busy times it would be difficult. It's right off 27 so it's the perfect location to check out other spots like Hmart. They go by pound $14.95 so be mindful for when you're choosing all the fixin's for your pot. When I say they have everything they do--from lobster balls to squid flowers, to frog legs and tripe, including sliced lamb and pork belly. Along with protein they offer at least six different noodles, tofu, and various version that would be considered a starch or carb. The vegetables are equally as vast--mushrooms to pickled eggs--even quail eggs, to several types of mushrooms, and other items found for hotpot. I will definitely be going back to this place because the broth was flavorful and fulfilling (beef broth). I decided to try both the dry and the soup pot and I can't choose which I like better! The dry pot comes with a peanut flavored sauce - I chose the medium but it actually wasn't too spicy! For the hot pot I chose a bone broth base and I really enjoyed the mild Mala seasoning! The ingredients are super fresh and exquisite - I didn't expect abalone or tiger shrimp at this spot!! This is my first time trying mala in Edison, NJ. They have a reasonable selection of seafood, meat, veggies, and noodles. It is $14.99/lb. I love how they have soup pot and dry pot! There's limited parking in front of the restaurant and behind the store, but there's several tables (~20 tables inside). There's a make your own sauce station with a few recommendations in case you're indecisive, and they provide free tea! I got their house special beef bone broth with a medium spicy. There are 3 levels of spice: mild, medium, and spicy. The wood ear mushrooms were not fresh? Because they kind of disintegrated into the soup and had a mushy not crunchy/firm texture. I got some of the sliced lamb, beef, and wagyu, but some of the beef was really fatty. I don't think the dry mix tasted as good as the soup mala. read more
