Convenience stores are great, but one that sells Japanese hand roll is even better. Maki Mart is a tiny shop that offers a nice selection of handrolls - priced at 3 different levels. Do make your trip early, as they sell out fairly often. The hand rolls came in an interesting packaging, involved a bit of DIY where you roll the rice yourself once you pull off the wrapper. As the seaweed was separated from the rice, it was kept nice and crunchy. Each roll wasn't that big, so probably need to eat a few to be full. They also offer a can of soup/drink with the order of 3 rolls. Trying 7 different options, my favorites were the salmon ikura and tako wasabi - as these had the most prominent flavours. The tiny shop serves up a good variety of assemble your own maki. We tried the jumbo salmon, fatty toro, golden uni(?), ikura uni and ebi ($41 total including tip). They were all decent but some rolls had a not so desirable rice to filling ratio. We had to take a few bites before we got anything other than sushi rice so even at a low price tag of $4 - $9 per roll, you feel like you're not really getting great value. It's an interesting concept and I'm glad we tried it. Not sure if we would go out of our way to pick up from MM again but if we're in the area, I would give them another shot. read more

A great spot for some sushi hand rolls! They offer some good deals as well. If you purchase three rolls, you get a drink for free and if you follow and post the place to your story on Instagram you can get a roll for free (up to $3.95) I believe. The hand rolls that I ended up getting were the salmon ikura, botan shrimp, spicy salmon and seasoned scallop. What's great is the seaweed is packaged separately to ensure freshness and so that you can roll it yourself and eat it right away. Came on the weekend so we could try their uni roll. The staff were really nice and so helpful! I tried the uni, salmon ikura, fatty toro, and spicy salmon. The uni was my favourite, it was so rich and creamy and tasted sweet and fresh. There was a good amount inside the roll as well! The salmon ikura, had so little ikura that it was easy to miss, wished there was more. The rest was great in flavour and quantity. I ate here for breakfast four days in a row staying at the hotel next door and it was the highlight of my day. As I'm from NY, prices for the quality of sushi was very decent with my favorites being the salmon belly and jumbo shrimp. We came for decently large order everyday (~13 rolls) since a friend and I were only in town for our tattoo appointment, so it was a perfect quick grab and go and kept us fed through the day, with a free drink. I recommend the hot soups if you're feeling tired of tea. Was surprisingly good and I went back for a different flavor everyday. Ambiance - 4/5: small store front so no seating area. However, it was nice, bright and clean in the store. Food - 4/5: got the following rolls: baby octopus, sea eel, california, mentaiko scallop, teriyaki salmon and spicy salmon. The rolls were flavourful enough that we didn't need to add any soy sauce. I personaly don't handle spice well so it's rare for me to use wasabi in general. The rolls costs anywhere from $2.95-4.95 per roll. It took us awhile to get the hang of rolling our own. My first roll and part of the seaweed broke on me but afterwards, it was fine. The filling to rice ratio for us was ok, however some rolls still had more rice. The drinks - we were not a fan of yogurt drink. It reminded me of the Chinese yogurt drinks in a small bottle, with an extra added flavour. The strawberry soy milk was ok. I would take that over the yogurt drink. If you are an avid yogurt drink lover, you can give it a try. I do wish they had the tea option available. Service - 4/5: the staff were super nice and quick. We got there around 10:30 and there was already a line up outside the store front. But the line moved fast. However the docked star is for the false advertisement at the door. It was supposed to be buy 3 rolls and you get a free soup or tea (see photos). However, they only had a yogurt drink and strawberry soy milk option. Overall: 4/5 - I would go back if I'm in the area. Definitely go right when the store opens! I went 20 mins before they opened and there was a line already. Thankfully the line moved super fast as it was quick and efficient. I visited around early lunch time and all the options were in stock. My favourite was probably the fatty toro but everything was pretty good. Usually one of my favourite maki rolls is spicy salmon but I didn't like their sauce as much and actually preferred the salmon ikura. The way it's packaged is pretty convenient to take out and keeps the seaweed fresh. I also love the little soy sauce bottle you get. I've tried the following rolls: Seasoned scallop - This one was not bad but note that they use chopped up scallop frills and not actual pieces of scallop Crab - Imitation crab meat. My coworker told me about this place. There isn't any seating available here and it's a bit of a trek for me so I was really hoping it would be worth my while. The shop is really small. It can't fit more than 4 or so people while waiting in line. There are menus on the walls with all of the rolls listed if you aren't close enough to the counter. There are also descriptions of what is inside them too so you know exactly what you're getting. I thought that they had a really wide selection so there was something for everyone. They have a combo where if you get 3 handrolls, you get to select a free beverage. There were several canned teas like oolong and jasmine and also some vegetable drinks. I went with the teas which are imported from Japan. So I didn't know but you actually roll these when you get home. There are instructions on how to roll it printed on the plastic wrapper around it. The only hard part about this was that the seaweed was really dry so it was super hard to roll it without it cracking. We received soy sauce which came in really cute little plastic fishies. Tip - if you ever want these little containers at home, I saw them at Oomomo! I thought everything was really tasty! Went to check this place out on a weekend an hour after opening and there was a line-up. Apparently they only allow 4x people in at a time as their shop is quite small with no seating. They have a promo happening where you get any 3x maki rolls and you get a drink (milk yogurt, strawberry milk of sort, a barley tea like and one other I missed. I end up getting 9x maki rolls with 3x free drinks which added up to $48 +... Here was what I got: Botan Shrimp- $6.95 (this one was only inside you'll see this option available. Fatty Toro-$4.95 Hamachi- $4.95 Sea Eel- $4.95 Jumbo Salmon- $3.95 Spicy Salmon- $3.95 Salmon Ikura- $3.95 Rice quality was decent, but it did fall apart when you bite into it. You basically unwrap each one and manually roll it together with the seaweed. You get little packet of wasabi paste and soy sauce in a fish. Overall, flavour and such, our favourite is the spicy salmon, and 2nd was hamachi and the rest was more or less the same. May visit to try other things in the future. The rolls are 3 inches or so, and even with 9x maki rolls, my wife and I easily finished these in 1-2 bites and still were fine. Tried a few different maki rolls which were in the 4-5$ range. All flavours tasted good. Its really the same as what you can get a J-town but the ones there are triangular shapped. The benefit of the maki roll style is you get more stuffing and less rice where as the triangular shapednones at J-town are with less stuffing and more rice. The store is very tiny and its pretty much just a front counter with maki rolls in glass display. read more
