    Take-out sushi platter
    Mike O.

I stand by my original review based on my dine-in experience but I wanted to provide this update based on the excellent service I received when ordering both delivery and take-out during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. I've ordered from Kato Sushi a couple times during the pandemic and each time they've done their very best to provide me and my family a fantastic dinner. Both orders contained special instructions (swapping rolls, replacing salads with soups, etc) that they honored. When I picked up my order they were organized and efficient to be able to give me my order quickly and safely. Their restaurant is also adjusted to keep everyone at an appropriate distance with adequate barriers and face masks, which made me feel safe. The staff at Kato Sushi was still as friendly and cheerful as I remember from my first visit. A little goes a long way and I really appreciate the the fantastic service, especially during these times. For anyone that is looking for sushi during this pandemic, I highly recommend Kato Sushi for takeout or delivery. You'll receive good food from a safe environment and from some great people.

Currently open for delivery or pick-up. I opted for the pick-up option during this COVID-19 pandemic. It is a very small place, nestled in one structure of four different businesses. The folks in Kato are very courteous and friendly. Your order is ready at your suggested time of pick-up. The food is fairly decent, especially the tempura batter which they used. Because after taking it home and laying everything out to consume, the tempura was still very crisp. I also thought their salmon sashimi was very 'melt in your mouth' sort of deal. However, I didn't find the chicken Karaage to be of anything that special. Still...Kato is not bad in my books. As a matter of fact, better than Maki which is a hop, skip and jump down the street. I'm glad we finally have some half decent sushi in town!

A really nice surprise to find fresh and tasty sushi. I ordered the spicy salmon and tuna combo, sashimi lunch bento special, yam roll and the orangeville special roll. Flavours were really good. Prices were decent and comparable to Markham prices. Rolls were decently sized and not small at all. Sashimi was cut nice and thick. Rice was just right, with a balance of vinegar and sugar. Would definitely come back and try other dishes.

For the price point, its good in the area. The rolls are bigger than the average you get else where. While sushi is a small decent size.

Excellent experience! Been to many Sushi houses around the GTA and this place definitely ranks near the top. Very clean place with simple but stylish decor. Service was super friendly and attentive. Food: very well constructed rolls with generous portions of fresh salmon etc. I do prefer a slightly more intense flavour of Wasabi and rice vinegar in the rice, but it was just perfect for my wife's palate. The meal was priced very reasonable for the quality, portion size and service provided. Best of all, its super close to home. Who new Sushi north of Markham could be so good! Will def be back! A++

We are so happy to discover a good sushi spot in Stouffville! We've been ordering from Kato the last few months and have always been satisfied with their yummy rolls. Our personal fave is their Yam Roll! It's fresh and crispy and comes with a generous portion of yam tempura "fries" on top. Their spider roll is also another winner with the perfect amount of sauce. They're also very accommodating and take note of special requests (eg. tobiko on the side). Will definitely keep ordering from here!

Wanted to try a local sushi joint, Kato Sushi is also fairly new. Ordered takeout to give it a try. Our Order: Shrimp Tempura $8.95 Nice Airy Crisp Tempura Batter and it was still warm. I've had tempura at other sushi places that didn't use the correct tempura batter. But Kato Sushi's tempura was A+ Chicken Kara-age $9.95 It was not warm anymore. But their batter was good, still crisp and the chicken was moist inside. Soft Shell Crab $10.95 It was also not warm anymore, and wasn't that crispy. Still tasted good. It would be better eaten there when it's fresh. Wakame Salad $5.95 The salad was a decent portion. It was just straight up seaweed, but I don't mind that, because it was a decent amount. Aburi Sushi (7 pcs) $9.95 The Assorted Torched Sushi was not bad, but the size of the pieces seem small. Sushi, Sashimi, & Roll Party Tray A $34.95 Red Dragon Sushi Rolls & Spicy Salmon Rolls 16 pcs, Assorted Sashimi 9 pcs, & Sushi 9pcs. I like that they have a whole speciality sushi roll on the platter. Spicy Salmon was pretty good. Variety of sashimi and sushi was your usual, salmon, tuna, butterfish, etc. I didn't really like that they put raw red onions on top of the Red Dragon Roll, but maybe they ran out of roe for the top. Overall everything was good and fresh.

3.5/5 This is the new sushi spot in town and I have been driving by it to work daily and seeing them renovate. I also heard some good things about it, so I had to give it a try! The interior was bright and had some wood accents on the wall and ceilings. They managed to fit a good number of tables in a tight space. They place was pretty busy with just a few tables left. We were seated quickly, but because they are new and workers are still trying to figure everything out, plus it was busy, we had to ask for a few basic things like plates, soy sauce dish, and napkins. The food came relatively quick. We ordered a Kato Sushi Boat, tempura shrimp, edamame, and 3 specialty maki rolls. The food is good, the maki rolls are cut very thinly and not rolled too well. My pieces kept falling apart when I picked them up. The fish is fresh for Stouffville, but I would say you can find many places in Markham that are better. I wish they cut the maki rolls a bit thicker so that it is easier to pick up. Prices were also on the high end compared to other sushi spots of this caliber. Overall this is a good place for sushi in Stouffville, but I will probably go to Markham to get better food for the price.

I decided to give Kato sushi since it is nearby. I opted for delivery and was impressed that the little tempura bits were still crispy when it got to my house. I got the crazy Kato roll and the salmon lover (A) set. The filing to rice ratio is great and the rolls are HUGE. The spicy mayo? Actually spicy! I think it was definitely worth it. Can't wait to order again :)

Top: agedashi tofu Middle: spicy salon dragon roll Bottom: spider roll

Living in Stouffville, there aren't many good food choices around, especially sushi restaurants. We decided to try Kato because of the variety they offered and to save the drive to Markham. We ordered the agedashi tofu, spider roll and spicy salmon dragon roll. The tofu wasn't bad, except the tofu wasn't as soft as I had expected to be (it was a bit on the firmer side?) the sauce was great though. There weren't big pieces of soft shell crab in the spider roll (and it was $15!). Most of the soft shell crab pieces were just thickly battered. We found that the sushi pieces just broke apart when being picked up by chopsticks (either the sushi rice was a bit too mushy, or it wasn't tightly rolled). They also offer a 10% cash discount for take out orders. I might try it out again if it wasn't so expensive $39.95 for 2 rolls and the tofu, or if they worked on their rice/tightness of roll...and maybe if I was really craving for sushi and didn't want to drive far.

    Alicia P.

We got the kato boat and it came with two rolls so we chose the spicy salmon dragon and torched scallop dragon (which is called something else, but I can't remember at the moment). It came with a lot of food! The rolls are huge. Spicy Mayo was actually spicy and the salmon belly that it came with was sooo buttery! The sashimi was great. It tasted really fresh. Tempura was good as well. Really loved the homemade tasting ginger. Would 100% order again!

I had picked up some sushi early on when it first opened and I really liked it then. Very fresh fish, rice grains prepared well and not mushy. I recently went back and grabbed one of the lunch box specials - 6 pieces of your roll of choice (excluding scallop or unagi, which is too bad as those are some of my favourites), 5 pieces of nigiri, and a miso soup or drink for $17. The nigiri had big pieces of fresh fish, and a smear of wasabi under it. The salmon avocado makimono I chose was exceptionally good. Large chunks of fresh salmon. Rice grains perfect. I appreciate them not using the black non-recyclable containers though the rice has a tendency to stick to the box. Overall, would recommend!

We sat at the bar area and got to see the chefs hard at work. The care, the precision and the details. Just wow. Prices are a bit high for a casual meal but definitely you are paying for quality. Ordered the premium set combo(ordered the chirashi box as well but will explain later). There is some caviar on the torched roll and little details in the different pieces. The combo came with a few sides. Came with a nice rich broth soup. There was a steamed egg with mushrooms which was so light but rich in flavour. There was salad as well which was refreshing. If you give them a Google review (don't worry I am loyal to yelp), they give you a few extra pieces as well. We also tried the fried oysters which came out fresh and hot and it was delicious. I definitely would be going back, just when I have more time. The only negative I have is the wait. From sitting and ordering, the food came a bit over an hour after. Was in a bit of a rush so had to cancel the chirashi box. Would have loved to try it. Place was rammed. Speaking with the waiter, it was unusually busy. I can't even be mad, they had one guy basically running around doing a lot of hard work. He and the chefs were very apologetic, giving us the oysters as an apology. They were not expecting a full house on a snowy Thursday. I can see why they had a crowd though. Food is amazing. Staff is great. Will definitely be going back

The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine.
