Fresh fruit mango bubble tea
Kristin K.

Came here with the fam jam last week after a fun filled Whyte Ave shopping day. I have to say that we weren't as impressed as we had remembered. The roll prices seem to have all increased from our last visit but then again so had the cost of life. Our daughter gobbled up the green onion cake and spring rolls. We opted for maki rolls. The spicy tuna was decent and the grilled chicken teriyaki was a hit with the kiddo. The dragon eyes felt very heavy on the rice side. I was really craving sashimi but my dining partners were not... alas, next time. Big thumbs up for having fresh fruit bubble tea options. My kiddos know that I'm not a fan of ordering them the powdered fake fruit kind but fresh fruit mango is at least packed with vitamins!

Surprise! It's actually not a tea bag.

Maki Maki had great reviews so decided to try it out. Big mistake. Our hostess/server greeted us right away but did she not want our business or doesn't believe their food was good?? Such a lackluster server & we needed to encourage her to promote their food. She, however, was really bubbly & engaging with the debit/credit machine to pay our bill. Miso soup: uneventful. At least it wasn't watered down. Lots of seaweed & tofu.. Salmon sashimi: $$$ for average sized slices but fresh. The sushi chef needs a course in presentation.. 2 uncut romaine leaves doesn't make a dish presentable. Rainbow roll: mushy sushi rice, skimpy fish covering rice roll and 3 slivers of avocado. Tempura: only one large platter of vegetables with 3 shrimp available on menu. Watch out...it's not tempura but a greasy thick batter. I had to peel all the batter off to find the shrimp, 1 yam slice, 1 carrot slice and then the exposed items were soaking in grease. It was like a game...what do you think this batter blob was. Was the server upset with my heaping pile of peeled off batter? Maki Maki is a Japanese - Vietnamese restaurant known for its sushi & service. Well, not today (Wed, Dec 3, 2020). It's very expensive for sub-standard food. Edo franchises are better even their tempura! 2s for a great glass of Coke with ice. Green tea tasted like it was a weak generic tea bag but it actually was steeped. Clean & nicely decorated restaurant (bleach smell when we walked in). $$$ Lots of better sushi restaurants

It's been at least 2 years since I've been here mostly because of covid. They've definitely done some renovations making this place a comfortable atmosphere to go out with friends or on a date! We had a great experience, the sushi was delicious and we had good service too. You do require a vaccination passport for those that need to know. They have an open area you can view as they prepare the sushi fresh to order. One of my friends had the sashimi which she said was excellent. Our table shared some vegetable tempura which was really nice, I love tempura! There's a very large menu so they probably have something for every sushi lover. This is definitely a hidden gem and I would recommend to anyone!

Pho lunch special. Murky broth.

Three stars is the most this place deserves. Overall the prices are good to excellent but the food quality is just not there. For sushi, that can be a little scary. I don't think I would ever get sashimi here. My first visit was with a large group at around 10pm on a Friday. We were the only party in the place on a Friday night. Remember that this is a restaurant with a lounge just off Whyte. That didn't bode well. It turns out this was the fanciest of my visits with the cooks including orchids on the plate for decoration. The table was full of tempura, rainbow rolls, spicy scallops rolls, Mexican rolls, etc. I was surprised to see some rolls around $5-8 per 6-8 piece rolls. Aside from what appeared to be a bullet hole in the glass partition and some mediocre ramen, the group was fairly pleased. The next visit I came for the dragon eye roll which is one of their regular specials. Gone were the orchids. It came out sliced in pieces of all different widths. There was no attempt at precision or uniformity which is unlike any sushi I have ever had. The rice was thick in some places, thin in others. Even supermarket sushi looks more professional. The roll was OK but not as good as the last visit. Probably would skip this in the future. On my most recent visit I tried the Vietnamese section of the menu. I had the pho lunch special that had every meat offering including tendon and tripe (my personal favourites). Having read another pho lover's review, I thought I was ready for the large serving size. I was not. The bowl was huge! Excessive, really. I enjoyed the pho at the start but found it didn't have the flavours required to maintain interest as the bowl went on. I found the broth a little murky. I would say it is worth trying if you like pho. It may be your perfect bowl even it is isn't mine. It would be tough to give a better rating. The menu has far too many items to allow them to be great in any one area. It's good enough. 'Nuff said.

Maki Maki is probably my favourite sushi place in Edmonton. Everything that I've ever tried is always so fresh and I've never been disappointed. My personal favourites are the volcano rolls and the dynamite rolls, and believe me there are tons to choose from on the menu. The restaurant isn't super loud even if it's busy and the food always comes out really quick. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and can help with recommendations if you're not sure what to try. There is a parking lot at the back of the restaurant, so you need to know your license plate so it can be registered in the restaurant. This place also offers Vietnamese cuisine as well, I've personally never tried these dishes but I love that they have different choices for customers. I highly recommend Maki Maki, and I know I'll be back for my next sushi fix s

I've driven by this place many times over the years and have always noticed how busy they are. Sunday evening just happened to be the day where it worked for my friend and I to meet up for supper and we're glad we did. We walked away very full from our selection of combo c and the daily special of dragon eyes roll. As a first time customer, I did feel a bit rushed from the first server to make a selection before actually forming some questions about the menu. It was probably how we ended up with so much food that two people could barely finish it all. We didn't realize how large the dragon eyes roll would be. The roll itself was twice the width of what a normal roll would be. I don't consider myself too novice of a chopstick user, but both of us ended up eating that roll with our hands. We couldn't figure out how to accomplish consuming it without it exploding on us due to the physical size of the roll. Also when the boat was dropped off with our combo c we were left guessing what was what. Between the two of us we had enough knowledge to deduct what each item was but in other sushi locations it's pretty common that they let you know what they are placing in front of you. Our waitress changed while we were there and that is probably a good thing as then we were checked on, offered more water and a refill on hot water for our tea. After all, we were there a considerable amount of time trying to devour all that was in front of us. We almost accomplished it too... Only one piece of dragon eyes left. I do have to mention that I was really glad I selected the restaurant side as I thought the booths were extremely comfortable to sit in and the decor was lovely to look at while waiting on my friend. If you do park in their parking lot, be sure to register at the till when you walk in. Apparently they've had problems recently with a lot of people parking in their lot that are not patrons, so this is their solution to manage that situation. However, I parked right in front of the restaurant and there's always plenty of other street parking options. Watch when you do park on the street though, as that area has a two hour limit.

#208 Pho with a side of chili oil! Vietnamese iced coffee brewin and the latest news
Lexci M.

Maki Maki is one of my top favorite places for pho. I go at least once a week by myself or with a group of friends. The service is always flawless and quick and the servers are smiley and friendly and make sure your order is exactly how you prefer. GREAT SERVICE EVERY TIME!! I always order the #208 pho (a little bit of everything) The portion is ENORMOUS and only the most skilled pho eaters can finish it on the best of days. Massive amounts of fresh beef, tripe and tendon and a broth so savory I actually crave it for days afterwards . They don't make a ready made spicy broth, which I prefer, so I get a complimentary side of chili oil, which I highly recommend. As a starter, I often order Avocado rolls. Their massive hunks of perfectly ripened avocado rolled inside-out style with tempura flakes inside to give it some extra cripsy texture and make this dish a meal in itself. The Vietnamese iced coffee is served to be made at the table in it's own , which I prefer over being served coffee over ice, The price is very reasonable. You won't leave Maki Maki hungry.

This review is specifically for the Japanese portion of the menu. There is also a Vietnamese and Western menu (pho and hamburgers, anyone?). I am always wary of places that have more than one kind of cuisine on its menu, and this place was no exception. We love sashimi and maki. The maki was average (see photos), nothing that really blew my mind, and the rice was mushy and generally there was too much of it. The wasabi paste was hit or miss - we got some blobs that weren't spicy at all, and others that were super spicy. The deluxe sashimi was actually pretty good, and each type of fish came in a multiple of two, which is great when you're just two people! I also liked that they offer low-sodium Yamasa soy sauce in addition to the regular soy sauce (assuming they fill the two jars with different kinds). Overall, I'd come back again to sample other menu items, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

I wasn't sure what to expect coming here. We wanted pho and it was open till 2 am. When coming in we heard loud music from the bar next door. Then a loud crash of dishes and people clapping. The waitresses were so busy but very friendly and well dressed. The room was full with music and chatter. We sat down an ordered and as we were pouring our tea our spring rolls appeared them as we bit into them our pho joined. The food was served very fast. The steak pho soup i was impressed had so much steak in it and tasted good. Usually when ive ordered pho steak at other places theres only a small bit of steak on top. I really liked this place and the price was good. I have a new favourite pho place.:)

Maki MAKI! After driving past this place all the time, I finally stopped in for the sushi dinner I had been craving lately. What a good decision! The rolls I ordered here mostly came with bits of tempura in them, which gave the maki a crunchy texture I wasn't used to, but liked a lot! The staff were friendly and I loved their kimonos! The authentic style of dress, plus all of the creative Japanese-style decorations really added to the atmosphere of the restaurant. My favourite thing was the tempura sauce. It was sweeter than most other tempura sauces I've tried, and it was amazing! I would go back just for that!

Outside of the restaurant. Looks can be deceiving

I ordres an assortment of them - red snapper, tuna and salmon for the sushi, California and Alberta rolls, and tempura shrimp cone. This time around I ordered the beef tataki, stir fried udon with chicken, miso soup and the 6 oz steak (for this one, a hot stone is brought to your table and you sear the steak on it; sauce are also available for this dish). I had green tea to drink and had green tea ice cream for desert. Service was very good and rapid, and very attentive and polite. And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. This was such an unforgettable experience and the best place we've spent our anniversary haha. 10/10, take my money. To Sushi Toshi, I'll be thinking about you.

So this review is a bit late but thought I should still write it as my Dad (who only ever really…read moreenjoys eating steak and potatoes or sometimes a pizza) thought this was a good enough restaurant to return to. So what made it that great that my dad would give it such a high review? First, if you've never seen an advertisement for this place, prepare yourself for ongoing talking and some well rehearsed comedy from the chefs. There literally is a live cooking show being done with your meals right in front of you. This combination of humour and meal prep was a big hit for my family (the 5 of us were constantly commenting on how things were being cooked, what was new to us and encouraging the ongoing trials of the fork toss plus the salt and pepper tossing trick by the chef). Second, it might be a Japanese place but they have steak! You may have guessed with my intro but that was an important decision factor in choosing a restaurant. We wanted a different place for the early Christmas family gathering but something everyone could enjoy. Third, they're very diligent about respecting allergies. My sister-in-law gets very ill with her allergies. So it's nice not having to worry. They set her food specifically on one area of the grill and no other food was ever placed there. Hers was never combined with the rest of ours either. They also had a different soup for her to enjoy and did a vinaigrette on her salad instead of the house dressing. The food itself is a decent price for a fine dining experience and what you get with the dinner. There's soup, salad, grilled shrimp, grilled veggies and whatever you choose as your main. All with great flavour and you get two different dipping sauces - one being better for meat and other with vegetables. Obviously if you select the options of more seafood to accompany the main piece of the meal, the price is more expensive. We all kept it pretty simple. Two with shrimp dinners, two with New York steaks and one with teriyaki beef. We were all quite happy with our portions and if you feel you need extra rice, they will bring more out. If you have saved a bit of room, there's lots of dessert options too but that comes with an additional price. I really was quite happy with that large selection of mocktails to try but for those that want it, there's a large selection of mixed alcoholic drinks, wine, beer, etc. The place is accessible from the outside doors to the grill tables and even though my brother struggles to see in dim lighting, there's enough random lighting that we found a well lit spot at the table for him. I liked that I didn't have to watch for random levels or steps. There are a few booths throughout the restaurant for those that maybe want a more secluded meal but there's no grills for those spots. So after such a glowing review, why am I only giving it 4 stars? Well as I had booked ahead of time and specifically gave a number of 5 people for the reservation, it would have been nice to know we would not have anything started to be cooked, nor our meal order taken until they fill the rest of the table around the grill. If I had that information, I could have easily invited a couple of friends to join. However as this came to us as surprise, it meant even though we didn't know who was joining us, we were forced to awkwardly wait over 15 min to have them arrive and then start giving our order when they were ready. At least some of the drinks had made it out by then but the place was starting to fill up so the noise level was increasing. Luckily for us my mom randomly know the couple that was sat at our grill table but there were parts of the dinner you could tell they would have enjoyed having their own time as a couple (as I'm quite sure they weren't informed they'd be part of a bigger table being that they were surprised that my mom thanked them for arriving on time so we can now order when they are ready). It would have also been a different experience for my family too without the combined table situation. I had to remind the chef who's steak was being prepared due to the over eager guy wanting a well done steak the same time as a medium rare... Things eventually got served to everyone but only because I spoke up, I was able to get near to what I had requested (glad that my dad at least got his medium rare) even though everyone had reconfirmed orders when the chef was placing the meat on the grill. Lastly, the noise in the restaurant was so high at the end of our meal that not only did my dad stop trying to have a conversation but so did the rest of us. So instead of savouring dessert, I ate it quickly as all I wanted was to pay the bill fast and just leave the noise. I've gone once before on a week night back in April and it was more manageable for noise level. This being due to not all grills were full nor was the restaurant as full.

I didn't even know Sherwood Park has a Japanese Village and I hadn't been to one in about 15 years. We had 14 in our group but this wasn't an issue as we were all able to all sit around two grills with two grill cooks. Our server did a great job of taking our drink orders, filling up our water glasses and making sure we were happy. I personally started with a pint of their house beer and the Tuna Sashimi. Both were tasty. For my main course I had Teppan - Yaki Dinner (Teriyaki Chicken) It came with soup, salad and green tea. Our grill cook was a nice young man who brought a smile to our face and kept us chuckling. For the value, I was happy with my meal, the price I payed and the fun interacting with our cook. I would definitely go back with a group of friends.
