Worst experience ever. We came here today for a late dinner around 9pm. My fiancé ordered pho with extra meat in the soup & I ordered chicken & prawn vermicelli bowl. To start when the pho came we asked if the pho had extra meat and the server responded "yes" (there's an extra $4 charge). The server came back bout 5 minutes later and said that the pho didn't have extra meat so he brought some on the side. By the time the meat came his broth for the soup got cold and when he added the extra raw meat to it - the meat didn't cook and it made the soup cold. We asked the server to microwave the pho & he took it. About five minutes later he comes back to the table and says he's "sorry" and they are cooking a new one. Five minutes later they brought back what's suppose to be "new soup" but when we went to eat it we noticed the hot sauce we added and green sprouts and the noodle we cut up exactly like the soup we sent back. During this entire shit show I was eating my vermicelli bowl just listening to my fiancé complain about the restaurant only to find a long black hair in the noodles I was eating. I let the server know and he took the bowl off the bill. I am entirely shocked at this experience and will never be coming back to this restaurant for sure. I like Maki Maki and have always had a fairly good time there, and I'd say it's a fun date spot. But I feel that the rolls are overpriced. Usually for two people, at least the three times I've been, the bill comes to $80, and I don't feel the quality of this sushi or the portion sizes live up to the prices. read more

Just down a block from whyte ave at 101 street it is a big square looking building with the name in very big letters on it which i liked. I was greeted quickly at the door and seated by a smiling elegant looking hostess . The decor is very pleasing to the eye with purple upholstered seats and nice wooden booths and tables. They have a lunch special menu and a regular menu. They have a lot of sushi,udon and other japanese things here here but i decided as usual on the pho. I see they also have raimen noodle dishes now as well. Maybe next time. A waitress came over in a short while and took my order ,pho lunch special with tea. Not long after she arrived with the tea which was the japanese rice type you generally get with sushi places. Tea was very good and as a bonus was served in a nice delicate glazed coloured china teapot. After awhile i get tired of the usual ugly metal ones used in many places with their guaranteed-to-spill spouts. The pho arrived a little after that. It also came in a pleasing looking bowl and the serving was very big. The broth was fragrant and very tasty and the noodles cooked nicely. Adequate amounts of the meats and tripe,tendon .Very nice. It came with fresh bean sprouts and greens. If you are very hungry this is for you.At only $11 a good deal. As i said service was friendly and non invasive and they have portable debit machines to pay which is also nice. There are only a couple of pho places on whyte ave that i've seen and this is the best so far. read more

Ugh. I was pretty disappointed with Maki Maki overall. I always thought it would be weird to eat Japanese in the same palace that used to be my favorite German restaurant, but I tried not to let that bug me. It started with the terrible service- I echo the comments of other Yelpers. She handed us the lunch special menus when we walked in, which was about 2:50. We had 10mins before the special was over, so I wanted to get my order in before it was too late. Two of us ordered from the specials and the third wanted to peruse the regular menu a bit more. We watched as our meals were prepared and placed on the counter ready to come out to us, all the while the server hadn't been back to take the third order. She finally came over, took the order and then it was another 15 mins before all the food came out. The food was...meh. I have had better and I have had worse. I had Maki combo B, which was 19 pieces of sushi. It was a mix of California, Dynamite and mini maki rolls. Since I got it for the 'special' price it was only $15 but I think I could have invested that in better sushi at a better place. Maybe I wouldn't have had as much overall, but the quality would have been there. If you have a late night hankering of sushi, then maybe give it a try since they are open really late. If not, do yourself a favor and go down the street to Tokyo Noodle Shop or Kyoto. read more

The soup was phobulous! I wanted to finally try some Pho soup, so I called to make a pick up order but it went straight to voice mail, but the voice mail box was full, so I couldn't leave a message so I went down to check it out-and hopefully get some food on Sunday Canada day long weekend. Some things did change from the last time I had been there, they are no longer 'cash only' and will also accept debit, and the prices have increased about a buck per item, and the menu has some minor changes as well. I started out with 2 deep fried spring rolls and for 3.00 it came with the usual ice burg lettuce and a sweet clear dipping sauce. It was tasty. The Pho Chin-beef noodle soup 11.00 arrived with a side of been sprouts and basil, I chose the beginner Pho with well done brisket, but next time will try some tripe and maybe tendon with rare steak added in. A lemon slice also came with the soup. The beef broth was amazing, and I enjoyed the rice noodles and crunchy bean sprout-that you just add in yourself. The place was clean and air conditioned, and had a strong base of customers who came and went. The brisket was very thinly sliced, and provided some great texture for the soup. I am sure to be back soon. They appear to be fully staffed, and now they also do debit, the day I went the cash machine was out of service, so with hopefully with some small technical improvements they will maybe start answering their phone, and clear their message box. Tempura to die for! Crispy and flavorful a perfect batter! Plump fresh fish on my sushi & sashimi. Large menu with lots of options. Friendly, helpful waitstaff, that were very attentive. Great environment, clean and comfortable. I would have given this place a perfect 5, but I just found it a little pricey I would suggest more mixed combo platter options to help keep the prices down for people that like to mix and match. I love Maki Maki! My boyfriend took me here on our 3rd date and since then, it is our go-to place for dining out. The food is great. They have a large variety of sushi and pho both of which are amazing! (Rich K. who said is below Tokyo Express is lying). They won best Edmonton sushi restaurant last year. The price is fantastic. After living in Japan for a while...I've become a bit of a sushi snob. Not going to say Maki Maki's the best sushi I've had, but it's one of the better options you can find in Edmonton. The menu is a little daunting at first...so many options, not enough stomach space. But there's something for almost everyone, people harder to please might not find anything on the menu they want but come on, Japanese cuisine, Vietnamese and a bit of Western...they're already giving you a lot of options for a cheaper price than Mikado :P The sushi I had was delicious, unlike other places I've gone to the rice doesn't fall apart as easily or crumble, which is a huge plus. I hate when sushi is made sloppy. Not only that but the sushi had a great balance in taste. Service was a little slow during the afternoon, even though the restaurant was relatively empty...which is the only down side. I would go back to Maki Maki. read more

This used to be my go to sushi place but after my experience tonight I will not be returning. I called in and placed an order for delivery i had to repeat myself 4 times till she understood California roll. Then she took my name thanked me and hung up it was about 10 min later I realized she didn't take my number or address. So I called back to tell them my address the same girl answered and when I told her address she asked me to hold on a moment witch took 5 min while I could hear her joking with her coworkers. When she finally got back to me she told me the driver was not in tonight so they couldn't get it to me. What would have happened if I didn't call back? Disgusted with my service tonight. The service was terrible. The cleanliness of the lounge was appalling. Not to mention the female servers were dreadfully rude, intentionally avoiding tables. We then moved to the dining room instead. They were not pleased by that, when asked why we moved I stated we were not getting service and waited over 15 till the table was cleared. She then left us at the new table 10 more minutes, then proceeded to send a different guy over. They were not super busy. I've been going to this restaurant for over 5 years now. It was actually the first restaurant in Edmonton I had ever been to, going on a suggestion of a friend that I had just met. Even after the multitude of staff changes, menu changes, and the renovations, the food here remains just as good as it has ever been. Their spicy lemongrass pho is my hangover goto. I try to take people whenever I can (at one point I was going there 4-5 times a week) and their experience has always been as positive as mine. The portions are huge and most people shouldn't be able to finish their pho or vermicelli. While the prices have gone up slightly over the years, the food here still stands as the best bang for your buck at all the pho places I have ever been to in Edmonton (and I've visited my fair share). I cannot speak for the Japanese menu as I am not a big fan of sushi. If you're a fan of pho, try them out. Maybe you'll end up like me years later, still going back. read more

I am giving it a 3 because of the sushi....however, as a "overall" score, it would be a 2.5. We went with friends who had been there before, however, not in quite a while. We were seated relatively quickly and our server seemed attentive enough when she seated us. My companion and our friend's husband ordered the sashimi/sushi "boat" and myself and our friend ordered the cod and the beef teriyaki. The Black Cod was quite good and well prepared although the huge portion of white rice could have been spared and perhaps a vegetable prepared Vietnamese style? This was also true for the Beef Teriyaki. This is what brought down the rating for me....never having been I did ask what would be a good "non sushi" meal since there was so much to choose from and never having gone, I was a bit overwhelmed. It was as though I hadn't asked, so I stuck with what I know. The sushi on the other hand was thoroughly enjoyed, so this is good :-) The rolls were quite good as I did order the Avocado Rolls and the Spicy Tuna Rolls. Very fresh tasting and amply filled with the ingredients where the rice wasn't so thick. Strangely enough (and this is where the "attentiveness" took a bit of a nosedive), we were never offered a "drink menu" nor did our server even ask. At this rate, we don't even know if they serve Sake/Japanese beers or the like.....even sodas. This is also true for dessert or something sweet. I would have thought that perhaps Green Tea ice cream or some Vietnamese/Japanese sweet but again, wasn't suggested or hinted....the bill though was suggested and it came expediently enough, machine in hand as well. If anyone can let me know about the drink/dessert situation here, I would at least like to know if they serve these items. Our friends felt badly that we went since they had remembered it very differently in terms of the service. The important thing is that the sushi was good and company better :-) read more

I was waiting and waiting for food to come and and about more than 30min after ne order served I couldn't wait any longer for another dish to come in. This used to be one of my favorite places to go..i would always go but lately they've had such shitty service. one of the staff members Loan is soo rude and disgusting, she kept rushing us and coming and checking on us and telling us to pack our sushi to go when we order $120 worth of sushi. I've never been so turned off in my entire life.It was no where near closing, and they werent even super busy, it was dead and she kept rushing us. Artchie and Sarah are AMAZING staff members, they are they only reason we finished our meal and didnt ask for a manager, but LOAN was so rude and nasty and apparently she is the owner's sister!!!! when we got our sushi packed, she threw them in the box and the rolls literally opened and fell everywhere. This place is sort of my go-to restaurant for Vietnamese food. While it's ostensibly a sushi joint, I've always preferred the ph and salad rolls. The sushi is great, don't get me wrong, but having a late-night option for noodle soup so close to work has been a blessing more than a few times. The service has been unerringly pleasant, the food is generally very good (there have been a couple of very rare exceptions, but if you eat at any restaurant long enough, those are bound to crop up), the atmosphere is pleasantly kitsch-Asian-Fusion and the location is incredibly convenient. A great place to take friends if you're looking for uncomplicated finger food. read more

One of my favourite spots in Edmonton! They have a good selection of maki and nigiri, and have the most common sashimi dishes as well. Their Vietnamese menu is also decent, and they offer an array of soups, as well as vermicelli and rice dishes. Also their pho is delicious, and it comes in a huge bowl! However, I have from time to time had employees treat me rather rudely... although this has been the exception, not the rule. read more
