I had my first experience with Shear Genius recently. It started off very pleasant. The stylists…read morewere friendly and welcoming. By the time I left, however, over 2 years worth of growth and expensive products (for 3C curly hair) were completely ruined with this hair cut. Instead of losing one inch across all of my hair, I lost one inch on the bottom layer and anywhere between 2-4 inches on the above layers. The thing is, I absolutely DID NOT ask for layers. To make matters worse, the handling of my situation was completely unprofessional. Here's the story: As the process of trimming my hair started, the stylist was cutting my hair in a way I had never seen before. I later found out the technique she was using was a technique for layering hair, which again, is something for which I never asked. At this time my hair was completely combed out, so I did not see the results in my natural curl pattern until I showered the next morning. I then found that I was given uneven, unmeshed, choppy layers. Even then, this technique was not applied evenly throughout all of my hair. I called and spoke with the woman who cut my hair, who insisted she did not give me layers. I told her she did, and I made it known I was extremely unhappy. Now if someone leaves your salon dissatisfied with the way you cut/styled her hair, I can understand being offended. What I cannot understand is not taking ownership of the mistake you made and instead getting defensive over your work. I came in to the salon so she could see what I was talking about. She saw the layers, and then asked several times about my previous hair length, insisting I must have had layers prior to coming in. Each time I said no and that I had picture proof my hair was all one length before I stepped through the door. Still, in an attempt to stand her ground, she lifted my hair above my head in an effort to show me my hair was all the same length. She seemed to purposefully miss my point, because I told her numerous times I did not care what the length was above my head; I cared what it was in the way my hair naturally falls. There was no resolution. The room was too tense, and I was tired of arguing. As the customer, I should not have had to deal with any of that, especially since I'm the one who has to walk away with ruined hair. I now have to wait over another year to get back what was so carelessly taken from me. As I left, this stylist said she was sorry "I wasn't happy." I was given an apology for my feelings, but not an apology for her mistake. The next day, however, I did receive a call, and she did apologize and offer me a free service to make up for things. No thank you.

On wedding day, as soon as I walked in I already felt comfortable with Karen's styling abilities and she kept me calm while creating the most gorgeous hairstyle for my special day. I absolutely LOVED it and it got so many compliments. I highly recommend this place!

I'm reposting this review I left on WeddingWire…read more.. Victoria was my hair and makeup artist for my 10/21/23 wedding. I had a hard time finding an artist who was in my budget especially because I was just getting my hair and makeup done, none of my bridesmaids or family, and many artists have really high minimums. I'm thankful for Victoria because she could come to my hotel and get me ready and I looked absolutely amazing on my wedding day - my dream look was really achieved. She took my feedback and suggestions really well. She was always very sweet and kind. However, I had some problems leading up to the day that meant I can't leave a 5 star review... I had some communication problems because my emails would sometimes bounce back and my calls go to a phone no longer in service - one time I even had to reach out to her on Facebook to get in touch with her (after I had paid). I booked my trial with her and drove from where I live in DC down to Richmond (even staying in a hotel overnight) and she wasn't there. I was truly shocked. She was very apologetic and came up to meet me in my apartment in DC for my trial instead, but it left a pretty bad impression and made me very anxious for my wedding day. I'm really glad I did the trial because there were some things I wanted to fix for the wedding day (all of which she achieved, except for having the fake eyelashes be a bit too long so they butted up against my glasses, which I pointed out for the trial but was still a problem on the wedding day. I've had my makeup done for other weddings and the fake eyelashes weren't a problem then, so I know shorter ones exist...) Thankfully, she was better at communicating over text after that and showed up on time for my wedding day and everything worked out really well, so all's well that ends well, but there were some bumps in the road.

I am very mixed here. I LOVED my haircut & color & Emily was a gem. Everyone at the salon and all…read moreof the assistants were so nice & super helpful. The last time I was in an Ulta was in PA & I was scarred for life. I went in for low lights and left a full blond. I am a natural redhead so seeing myself blond was very upsetting. I haven't dared to come back to Ulta since. My mom however goes regularly to Ulta to get her hair done & she has been nagging me to get mine done (ok, ok, it HAS been a while I admit) so I made an appointment with her stylist. I was very nervous. Very very nervous. When it was my turn, Emily saw how anxious I was & immediately put me at ease. She was kind & friendly and listened to what it was that I wanted. She involved me in picking out my color & carefully explaining the mix she was going to use. First off, when she started cutting, there was a collective gasp from some of the customers watching as over a foot of hair was being cut off. I had to reassure them that this is what I wanted. Then came the coloring, oy did that take forever. Over an hour just to apply. Oy!!! She then took me to rinse it all out & wash my hair. OMG this is where I think I've fallen in love with getting my hair done again. She didn't just wash my hair, she gave me a scalp massage. It was heavenly. When she finished styling & I was all blown out I was amazed at how awesome my hair looked. Seriously. It's been a minute since it looked this good. I only have a couple of complaints. One was during this was how warm it was in the shop. Seriously. I felt like it was summer time and they didn't have an air conditioner. I didn't even wear a sweater or warm shirt but man, I was schfitzing! The next was finding something. All I wanted was to check out make up brushes but would have been late for my appointment if I kept looking. IMPOSSIBLE!! You'd think going to where it's labeled 'makeup' it might also include tools. Nope. All in all, this is a clean shop with super helpful & friendly assistants with a gem in Emily as a stylist.

Ulta is also very clean and stocked shelves which I cannot say about Sephora lately and I used to not be able to say about many Ultas, but this also really stepped up their game. The staff is very friendly very knowledgeable. They have all the great product selection. Highly recommend. They also now carry Amica in store so it's not a Sephora exclusive so I mean this Ulta carries basically everything that's sephora would carry but it's cleaner.
