Don't bother going to this dental practice. You will just end up being frustrated. The dentists themselves are perfectly capable dentists, but the office staff is irritating to deal with at best, sarcastic and downright rude at their worst. Here was the deal breaker: My phone rings: Dr. Mak's Office: Hi there. You had an appointment this morning with us and you missed it. Would you like to reschedule? Me: Wow. I didn't even know I had an appointment. When did I schedule this appointment? Dr. Mak's Office: Perhaps you scheduled it six months ago after your last cleaning. Me: Yeah, maybe. Don't you usually give a courtesy call to remind patients about upcoming appointments? Dr. Mak's Office: We did. We called your work number and left you a voicemail. Me: I've been on vacation and didn't get that voicemail. Okay, I guess I'll reschedule. Dr. Mak's Office: Okay, we'll need a credit card number to charge you $40 for a missed appointment. Me: Can you make an exception here? I didn't even know I had an appointment with you and didn't receive your courtesy call. I've been out of the office. Dr. Mak's Office: Sorry, we can't waive the fee. Me (frustrated): Okay, I'll call you back to reschedule a time. Then I call my work voicemail and find that there is no message from them. I share this news with them when I call them back and express my extreme dissatisfaction with the unflinching enforcement of this policy. Me: I'm not going to pay you $40. Dr. Mak's Office: Okay, then I can't schedule your appointment. Me: So you're saying that Dr. Mak would prefer to lose me as a patient rather than waive the $40? Can you understand how that would make me feel like you don't really care about me as a patient? Long story short...they couldn't care less. You shouldn't either. It's a shame because Dr. Mak is a good dentist, but the office policies and staff are absolute deal breakers. read more

I've been going to MKD for several years now. Dr. Kleiger is fantastic - warm, knowledgeable and gentle. I'm sad to say this my first negative experience at the dental office, though. Michelle, my dental hygienist was so rude. It started off b/c I corrected her on my name. Then she proceeded to punish me with a stern dental cleaning, saying if I flossed more or purchased a better toothbrush it wouldn't hurt so much - she pointed out my Soniccare was not as good as her Platinum Soniccare. While my mouth was full of dental equipment or fluoride, Michelle would take jabs at me, saying, "Most adults don't mind the taste of their dental products," (therefore, I'm childlike). Later she stated, "Other patients are much more versatile and will see which ever dentist is available," in my response to my request to wait for Dr. K rather than just see which ever dentist was first available. I wanted to follow up with Dr. K about a filling he did 3 months ago that I was having some tenderness with - completely reasonable I think. Michelle proceeded to go to the next room and complain that her patient was "a little difficult." It was totally unprofessional and while I didn't tattle on her to her boss, I did bring it up to her as soon as the dental cleaning was over. At first she denied doing anything wrong and when I told her I heard her talking about me in the next room, she said, "what did I say?" When I repeated her words to her, Michelle's mouth dropped open. No redeeming apology from her. I told Michelle she should treat her paying customers better next time. WE ARE THE PAYING CUSTOMERS AFTER ALL and there are plenty of other dentist offices to choose from. I booked about a month or so in advance and they ask you to print, fill out, and send them several papers before the appointment. My appointment was tomorrow. They called today to confirm it and to ask that I send the documents, which I had sent a month ago. I had to look for them and re-send them. In those documents I made a footnote stating that no work that was not covered by my insurance could be performed without a prior written quote with the price. In this confirmation call, they stated that they cannot honor my footnote because they "don't know what things are going to cost". Granted, I could walk in there and have a complete disaster in my mouth, but they should be able to provide a written quote before doing any work. If they don't, you might just walk out of there with a $5,000 bill. I cancelled my appointment. No thanks, I cannot comprehend a dentist that is unable to explain to you in writing the work he is going to do and how much out of pocket money you'll have to spend. I'm not writing them a blank check. This is the first review I've done where I didn't even get the chance to put my foot in the door before realizing that I was in for a very, very, bad experience. read more

I use to love Dr. Mak's office. I normally go see Dr. Johnstone...she's awesome! And the front desk staff is VERY nice. I had an adequate hygenist this last time I visited but I found the visit a bit different than it use to be. I think what bothered me was that the dentist spent about 10 minutes or less with me. I kind of want the dentist to really check me out, especially because I (admittedly) have crappy teeth. My hubby had the same experience. Maybe it's because they have a fancy new office they have to pay for? Not sure, but I think I want a bit more of a personal feel when I have someone reaching inside my mouth. read more

UPDATE: Okay, okay!! In all fairness, my rant below was pretty emotional because I don't feel that the office is as professional as it was when Dr. Lawson was there. I was spoiled...so sue me. However, I got a call from the office manager the other day, who expressed hurt that I did not speak with them before posting my prior review. So, here's the skinny: In the 10 years that I have been there, I have only been kept seriously waiting only ONE time. (Not bad for 10 years.) Also, she informed me (but these were not her exact words) that, basically, I was getting service for practically free because I'm a DMO patient (kinda like welfare - she didn't say that either...but that's how it made me feel). They are only paid a minimal amount by the insurance carrier to provide the services they provide for me. (So, I guess I should be grateful, huh?). She assured me that there is no benefit to them in charging for services that are not needed (especially with DMO patients). I believe her. ( I repeat, I believe her. ) But that is how I honestly felt that day when I left that office after getting that filling replaced. Okay, so I was ready to leave them because I felt like the quality of service was going downhill...and FAST. However, perhaps I will remove the emotion and look at it with more logic. They are still HEAD and SHOULDERS (and then some) better than my last dentist. But, hmmmmm, now this makes me want to take a closer look at a traditional dental insurance plan. I hate feeling like I'm basically getting a hand-out. I pay my premiums in EVERY paycheck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have been with this office for almost 10 years. When I first started going there, they were FANTASTIC!!! I switched from the "cattle ranch" that used to be called Dental Plus (ewwwww!!!). I loved them up until 2007. They charged me for something that was covered by my insurance. I actually had to call my insurance company to SPEAK with them and TELL them I am covered. They ended up grudgingly cutting me a reimbursement check. Last year, Dr. Kleiger told me that I needed a filling replaced. When I went in for the appointment, I waited for almost 30 minutes (which never used to happen). When I got up out of the chair and asked for be rescheduled, THEN he comes running in with his dental assistant, finishing his lunch and saying something about a birthday party. He re-did the filling in my tooth and say "Oh, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was." I'd been had. My out-of-pocket was $80 for a filling that I really didn't need replaced. I have been trying to get a detailed receipt from them for two weeks now. Finally, Dana "SAYS" she will fax it to me today. Apparently, the toner on their fax machine is out...and it prevents them from receiving and SENDING faxes (you don't NEED toner to send a fax). Finding new health care providers is such a shot in the dark so when looking for a new dentist, I turned to my coworkers. My boss recommended his dentist so I gave it a whirl & have been very pleased so far! Fun fact: i don't see Mak nor do I see Klieger. I actually like to see Dr. DeMesa. He's really nice & helps make the dentist less scary :-) All of the dental techs I've had are equally great as well. Pro tip: there is an overflow lot in between Mentor & Catalina since the lot directly behind the building is so small. read more

So far so good. Dr. Kleiger has to be one of the nicest dentists I have ever met. I am scared to death of dentists. And when I say scared to death, I'm talking shaking, and freaking out. I have had some horrible procedures with previous dentists that have literally landed me in the emergency room, and have had abscesses due to that and emergency surgery on top of that. Other bad issues have resulted in pain and broken crowns and I literally just checked out of dentistry for a number of years. Dr. Kleiger was recommended through a co worker and he worked on my son's invisiline last year -- and this year I finally got enough courage enough to go in and try to take care of my own problems. If I haven't said it before, he's pretty much the nicest dentist I ever met. While I was freaked out he calmly walked me through all things I needed to get done and today I got done half of them. I am really glad that I did finally get in a chair again -- I have to give 5 stars for that. but we'll have to see when the Novocaine wears off to give more info ;) . I also have more stuff to do and I'll update again then.. but for now, a big THANK YOU to Dr. Kleiger -- if it wasn't for you -- I'd probably be in a worse place than I am now. It's your humor, calming spirit and downright awesomeness that helped to get in that chair again after all the bad experiences I've had. ETA: Novocaine has worn off.. My family has been going to Dr. Kenneth Mak for 25 years..Whenever I meet someone they say you have the prettiest smile, I attribute that to my parents and special help from Dr. Mak. Last year I had to change dentist offices because of the type of insurance I had. I thought okay, I found another dentist for my family we did our visits etc..it was alright BUT I knew immediately that the level of care, attention to detail and just a feeling of overall goodness did not exist. October was open enrollment and I could not wait to change coverages and get back to Dr. Mak and his amazing staff. That old saying/song... Dr. De Mesa and staff at this dental office are REALLY good. Either they are really awesome, or my last dentist just sucked. I was with my last dentist for many years, but the quality of their staff just kept declining. They always screwed up on my bills, and I didn't feel they were very thorough with my cleaning. D. De Mesa was very thorough and spent time explaining everything. I felt like they rushed the appointment a bit, but I guess they just have to since they have so many patients and need to be very efficient. I still thought I got all of my questions and concerns answered though, so I walked away very impressed with the doctor. I just went back this week to get two cavities filled. It was quick and efficient. In and out in less than an hour. The only complaint I have is that this office isn't as intimate as most other dental offices I've been to. They don't tell you how much your appointment costs until 24 hours before your appointment. I called a few times to ask how much my appointment would be, they said they wouldn't know until hey verified my insurance coverage the day before the appointment. I requested that would do this ahead of time and let me know, they said someone would email me. Called again, and for 2 weeks they never followed through on their promise. My dentist was a cool young Filipino guy. Dude gave me the best cleaning ever. He replaced some filling and gave me a new filling, I don't think it's the best... I feel like my other dentist in Beverly Hills paid more attention to detail. Maybe I'm boujie, but teeth need to look on point. It's hard for me to not be drawn to people's teeth while they are talking and their teeth look busted and crusted. read more

Dr. Kleiger is really as good as it gets. Aside from dentistry, it is hard to find a person in any business to be as honest, warm hearted and personable as he. I never leave a review, but after the third time he generously fixed my chipped tooth, I felt he truly deserved a wholesome review. He always expresses his knowledge and answers any questions you may have very honestly. At this point, any previous dentist I've seen would have told me to get veneers or crowns, but Dr. Klieger reminds me that my teeth are still beautiful and he continues to maintain the bonding composite he applied initially. I switched insurance and he is no longer coved, but I will continue to see him because I trust and value who he is as a professional. I'm really afraid of the dentist so naturally I've gone to my fair share of dentists looking for the ONE. I'm happy to say I've found him! Dr. Kleiger has excellent bed side manner and put me at ease with his caring attitude. Most importantly, I did not feel a thing from injection to filling completion. Dr. De Mesa is a great dentist. Very fast and efficient, and he know just how to give the novocaine shots so you don't feel them! I've had a particularly difficult tooth, and they have been super patient, seeing me at no charge several times to adjust my bite and do an x-ray or two. The receptionists are friendly and helpful as well. My only concern is the billing - there was a time when the Dr told me my appointment would only be $35, and then when i got to the desk, they tried to charge me $150. I haven't been to the dentist in seven years. My teeth are very sensitive, and the last cleaning I had at my previous dentist was so uncomfortable, that I quit going. Finally, I decided to make an appt with Dr. Mak. After x-rays and an exam, it was pretty obvious I needed a deep clean to remove seven years of buildup. Dr. Mak explained everything very clearly to let me know my options. I let him know that I was apprehensive about the pain given my very sensitive teeth. On the day of the deep clean appt, Dr. Mak did a fantastic job of getting me numbed up, so that I didn't feel anything at all. Already, I can tell a definite improvement in my gum health. I go in next week to have the other half of my mouth deep cleaned. Given how smooth and painless the first half was, all of my fear of the dentist is gone. Thanks Dr. Mak! read more

Dr. Kleiger is very professional. He always tells you everything that's happening and everything that's going to happen. I got five fillings done (three appointments), and I didn't feel a thing and each procedure was very fast. Dr. Kleiger was very good at explaining things. The practice has many chairs (where they work on your teeth) and many very professional assistants. The building is relatively new and modern. I didn't have any trouble finding parking and it was free. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes from the time I arrived to the time I saw the doctor. I was a bit late to a couple of my appointments and it didn't seem to be problem. read more

"I feel like a King because I got a crown from Dr. Kleiger" Okay. Let me give it to you all straight. This is the best Dentist and dentist office in the state of California. The moment you walk into the door you are greeted with the sweetest smiles this side of the san gabriel mountains. Specifically Patty and Teresa (Teresa's name is the hardest to spell) are lovely. I generally try to come early just so that I can talk to them for a few minutes. My guess is that they are really angels on this Earth in disguise because they were too sweet for heaven. Once you say goodbye to the ladies in the front, you are taken to one of the rooms in the back. My favorite is the last one on the left (i call it the VIP room). This is where I received the most pleasant root canal of my adult teeth life. I must say, Dr. Kleiger knows what he is doing. You have heard of the tooth fairy, this man is the Tooth Wizard. The guy passes no judgment. When he examined the remains of my candy deteriorated teeth, he simply said, "we are going to fix you up." He explained what he was doing at almost every step, asking often how I was feeling. For a young business man like myself, my wallet is not as often filled with as many 100 dollar bills as I would like. But Lord knows that they can help you out in a pinch. Their primary concern is about your health and well being. Its something pretty rare and I feel lucky to have found a dentist I trust so well with my money maker (smile). Excellent Dentist...they actually keep their appointment times :). My wife and I are so glad our neighbors recommended Dr. Ken Mak to us. We hated our old dentist who would always try to overcharge our insurance and us with unnecessary procedures. This place is top-notch, with the latest computerized equipment including digital x-rays. Don't listen to the reviews complaining about being charged for missed or cancelled appointments, they deserve the fee. This is one of the few dental offices that doesn't overbook, thus they need to be super-strict about their 24 hour notification for cancelled appointments. If you don't make it to your appointment on time and you didn't cancel 24 hours in advance, they will appropriately charge you a fee for blocking an appointment time that could've been used by another patient. Every dental office we've been to always overbooked their appointments to deal with cancellations. As a result, we would always spend 1 hour or longer waiting in their overbooked waiting room. This place keeps their appointment times to the minute, even earlier if you happen to arrive 5 minutes early. This is a wonderful policy, and I hope they don't relax their late cancellation policy one bit. That's how they're able to make sure my appointment is always right on time as scheduled. The Hygienists here do an excellent job, my teeth have never felt so pampered. They offer free validated valet parking. They're real close to the 210 FWY at the Lake Ave entrance/exit. read more

Drs. Mak and Kleiger are both stellar and their practice is great. They were the first dentist I went to when i moved to LA 4 years ago and I have never once thought about leaving. They have pretty good hours and are flexible with their scheduling. In my job, I often have to cancel and re-schedule appointments with very little notice (I've bumped up against the 24 hour threshold numerous times). They have always been very polite and happy to get me a new appointment time. Their offices are very clean and bright, and they have a large amount of staff and chairs to move through a lot of patients quickly. Usually, I can be in and out for a routine checkup/cleaning in 30-45 minutes tops. They also utilize the newest and best equipment around to aid in doing the job right and with as little pain as possible. Overall, the M&K team is extremely wonderful to deal with and are all great examples of professionals. read more

I'm surprised to read some of these negative reviews. My experience with this practice has been quite different. I have been seeing Drs. Kleiger and Mak for about 9 years. I have had only excellent care. One of the many things I actually like about the practice is that they DON'T try to sell you things you don't need. There is no hard push for the teeth whiteners or the cosmetic crap. Sure, it's there. You can read about it and take fancy brochures home if that's your bag. I never feel, however that it's being "sold" to me. Another reason I continue as a patient is the intelligent and gentle bedside manner of both dentists. They take time to answer all questions and I never feel rushed or cattle prodded out. The most important reason I go is because these guys have never hurt me -- never. If you've ever been to a dentist who has you'll know why that's my number one reason. I'm also a needle phobe -- have passed out several times just getting routine blood work -- and it's not been an issue with Kleiger and Mak. It's over before I know it. I'm also allergic to epinepherine which is generally what is used as an anesthetic for dental procedures and they always graciously and effectively work around it. Why is everyone so down on the parking?? It's an open lot with plenty of spaces and an attendant. No crazy twisty parking garages to make you late. Someone to watch over your car AND they validate. I'm happy! The only way I could see it being any better is if they washed and waxed my car while I'm in the chair. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Mak & Kleiger for almost 20 years. Every time I go, I am amazed at the level of their skill. Three years ago, Dr. Mak saved my molar, which had cracked, by capping it with a hand-sculpted crown. He was also very kind to my husband who, though afflicted with a brain tumor, also needed a root canal! I hate going to the dentist, and so does my husband, but when he needed to go because his teeth were literally falling out, we found Dr. Kleiger ..and boy, Thank Goodness! He is a wonderful dentist, explains everything and makes you feel comfortable. The office is great - very clean and the examination/treatment rooms are clean and bright. They are really state of the art with computer programs that show your treatment needs, xrays load right onto the screen so you can understand and see what you need done. My husband got his 11 fillings done, pain free and in two sessions, under 30 mins each time..and quality work. You can't even tell that he's had fillings done! If you need a good dentist this is the place to go. I prefer Dr. Kleiger he has been treating me for 10 years. Everyone is very nice and gentle, but the down side is when they bill you is not really always the correct amount. They will tell you to pay one amount when they are finished with the cleaning then they bill your insurance if the insurance did not give them the whole amount wich is not your fault they then send you another bill for the difference. Why can they get it right the first time!! Otherwise I still keep going for only one soul reason and that is DR. KLEIGER!!.. My issue is front desk staff. I got billed for late charges for a bill that I never got before. I'm glad to pay my fair share. I paid the woman upon my arrival to my appointment. After my dental work and upon my exit, another woman asked for payment AGAIN. Really? I then asked to confirm my next appointment. She reluctantly asked for my last name and entered it into the computer. Seemed like a huge chore for her. You had my billing paperwork with my name on it in front of you. Overall, come here for great dental work but you might have to deal with bs and attitudes. Update: Dr. Mak personally followed-up, and that means everything to me. Nice guy. I have been here twice and seen Mak. If you want a drill happy dentist that just wants money, this is the place to be. The first time I came in they told me that I should have my teeth cleaned every 4 months even though my insurance doesn't cover it. OK weird but whatever. The next time I came in Mak wanted to drill starts of cavities even though there wasn't anything. Yeah pass, no thanks. So I tried to get them to email me my x-ray records to go to a new dentist, and they charge for that too! DO NOT GO HERE. I have heard Kleiger is great, but avoid Mak like the plague! read more

The quality of the actual dental work is good, I'll say that upfront. However, the service has been poor in my experience, and I think it weighs heavily against the quality of work. My experience, briefly: What was supposed to require 3 appointments took 8. During my checkup, Dr. Mak suggested by crown be re-done, which would require two more (fairly brief) visits. On my first visit back, they decided to x-ray the area to check on the root canal and discovered I needed the work re-done and the crown work couldn't be started yet. Shouldn't that have been checked during the previous appointment? After the root canal, I had the temporary crown put on. A few days later, it fell out and they needed me to come in to re-cement it. The hygenist used extra strong cement to keep it in place for the next few days until my permanent crown was ready. Three days later, I went for the permanent and after removing the temporary, they informed me that it wasn't made right and wasn't ready to be put on. Couldn't they have checked that and called me before I came in? They re-cemented the temporary (again) and a few days later it fell out (again) but I didn't have time to go in to have it re-cemented (ie to go twice in one week). When I went for the permanent the second time, Dr. Mak informed me that my gums and teeth had moved over the course of two days, and the procedure took longer than expected. So he didn't have time to work on my other small filling -- and required me to come in (again). There may be advantages to a large practice, but I felt that their lack of service undervalued my needs and time as a patient. I won't be going back. read more

I've been a LONG time patient of Dr. Mak & Dr. Kleeger but now I'm doing to find a new dentist. I have no complaints about the dentistry but the front office staff needs to GO! I've had numerous issues with the office staff who have treated my concerns extremely unprofessionally. The last incident was the cherry on top. The office staff charged me a co-pay for my visit, which I thought was strange but I paid it. I checked with my husband later and he said that we are 100% covered and I shouldn't of had a co-pay. I contacted the office and the staff said that I actually didn't have any insurance and that I that I owed them money. WHAT!!! Once they figured out my insurance was good (many phone calls later) and that they in fact owe me money, I now had to wait until the insurance company paid them until I get a refund (approx. 2 weeks). So, 2 weeks come and go and I call AGAIN to follow up. The office manager tells me, "You have a zero balance. Thanks" WAIT! You owe me money! I let her know. So, she gets snippy and insists that they don't. She FINALLY decides to look at my file and discovers that she's wrong. No apology. No expediting my refund! Just I'll put your check in the mail at the end of the week and that's it. So adios to Dr. Mak & Kleeger's office! read more

Thanks Julie P. for the heads up. I just finished my appointment and as soon as the clock hit 30 minutes, I was coming back for the rest of my cleaning! I complained and made them do it. I am too busy to schedule an appointment for a cleaning, show up to the appointment, only to be told to come back so they can collect another payment from my insurance company. Not happening. I am a client and this is not working for me. Its a dental factory. read more
